James. Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Sounds to me like the Kings of Leon have let a bit of fame go to their heads no? If you make a couple of commercial tunes and earn an absolute fortune from them don't get all snotty if half the crowd aren't die hard fanatics... people paid good money for that festival.
Flynny Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I reckon twice the safe amount of people were in the inner ring I reckon twice the safe amount of people have been in your mums inner ring.
Joe. Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Prodigy was pretty insane to be honest. When you start about ten rows from the front and end up about fifty back you know you've just watched a good gig.
Finchy Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Prodigy was pretty insane to be honest. When you start about ten rows from the front and end up about fifty back you know you've just watched a good gig. yeah I started a few rows from the front getting crushed like mad, everyone shouting Hillsborough, some people crying and getting lifted out, it was pretty insane. Few songs in I was in a huge circle pit eating dust and a few songs later I was to the right of the stage miles from where I started and I ended up by the end almost under the left speaker! How did it even happen haha. Great gig tho, I think with those sort of bands the closer to dying you are the better, it would have been rubbish if you were right at the back. Anyone see any smaller bands that were good? I loved Titus Andronicus, their debut album is fantastic. Also The Xx were great (free tshirts ftw).

They should have been a headliner without a doubt. By the time Arctic Monkeys came around I was absolutely fucked, and it kind of took the gloss off of their performance a little bit.

Craig Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 My weekend... Friday: Kings Of Leon - fook you. Friendly Fires - decent, if not a bit crushed. Florence & The Machine - surprisingly enjoyed this, caught the set by mistake but i'm glad i did. The Big Pink - utter shite. The Horrors - much better than last time i saw them. The Temper Trap - anthemic. The Virgins - mmm, not bad. slightly disappointed i think. Manchester Orchestra - nothing special, enjoyed their set though. Dananananakroyd - great start to the music. Saturday: Arctic Monkeys - amazing, with a shite crowd. The Prodigy - fooking rubbish. The Bronx - not usually my sort of thing, enjoyable though. Metric - easy on the eye. The Rakes - the rakes, not much more to say than that. Pulled Apart By Horses - despite not liking these before i went, i really enjoyed their set. Mariachi El Bronx - a nice, relaxing start to a big day. Sunday: Bloc Party - brilliant, shame they don't mix their setlist up though. White Denim - meh. The Gaslight Anthem - not great, not bad. better last year. Crystal Castles - rave! Brand New - shit sound, but that's not their fault. Metronomy - highlight of the weekend. Frank Turner - lovely sing alongs. Noah And The Whale - yawn. Titus Andronicus - can't really remember these, did i really go and watch them?
Joe. Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Ah screw it, might as well follow suit. From Leeds: Friday Dinosaur Pile-Up - Really, really good start to the festival. I'll be looking out for more of their stuff soon enough. Fightstar - Only went in the first place because one of my mates loves them. Dear lord what a horrible, horrible band these really are. Firstly they'll never be taken seriously because they have Charlie from Busted, and secondly because they are absolute gash live anyway. Enter Shikari - Seeing as there was nobody else I liked playing at the time, a few of my lot wanted to and see these. I thought they'd be horrible live, but I was actually pleasantly surprised. Get the crowd going well, and actually sounded decent live. The Courteeners - I'm pretty sure these will become much bigger eventually. I hope they do anyway. A really good band live, I was very impressed by their whole set. Bit disappointed I didn't know the words to many of their songs because they're a real singalong band. Ian Brown - My mate's thought he was absolute gash, and his performance was pretty poor to be fair. I think anybody buying tickets to see him these days would be doing it purely for old times sake. His dancing is embarassing. Having said that, Fools Gold went down a treat, and Stellify sounded pretty good. Maximo Park - I knew they'd be good live, and they didn't disappoint. I've been wanting to catch them for a long time now after seeing them on television at festivals in the past, and they were superb. Prodigy - Mental. As I said before, started fairly near the front and ended up about fifty people back and to the right. Their set-list was absolutely brilliant as well from start to finish. Arctic Monkeys - Loads of people came out disappointed and telling me that they were shit, which pissed me off. I don't know whether playing a lot of their new album was a bad decision or not, but I loved them. When The Sun Goes Down was quality. Saturday Lethal Bizzle - Went for a laugh really. What we got was totally unexpected, and absolutely fantastic. He gets invited back each year so he must be doing something right. The crowd are like putty in his hands when he's on stage, especially when breaking into Jump Around and Smells Like Teen Spirit. Frank Turner - Somebody I've wanted to see ever since I heard his first album. So good I've just bought his most recent one, he deserves my money without a shadow of a doubt. Great singalong. Caught the end of Crystal Castles (extremely odd) and Vampire Weekend (sounded awful from the back, although apparently good near the front) inbetween. Gaslight Anthem - Really enjoyed them, and I think everybody else in the crowd did too. Their album is fantastic, and it's equally as good live. No doubts that these will be a lot bigger in the next year. Bloc Party - I thought they were great last year, but massively disappointing this time around. Their sound was awful, and I didn't think much to their set-list either. The crowd was pretty static for it other than when Helicopter came around, which was always going to happen. Radiohead - Probably the most impressive spectacle you could ever wish for from a band. However, their set-list for Reading was so much better than for ours. We didn't get Creep, Karma Police, Fake Plastic Trees or High and Dry, which was massively disappointing. Just and 2+2=5, however, were superb. Sunday Dananananaykroyd - Musically I thought they were a bit poor after looking forward to seeing them, but you can't fault their entertainment value. I'd challenge anybody to find a more energetic band on stage, and with two singers and two drummers it's never dull. Jack Penate - A little dull to be honest. If I'd have known more of the tracks I'm sure it would have been much more enjoyable, but I'd be lying if I said I was overwhelmed by the whole performance. Didn't really do anything wrong though to be fair either. Florence & The Machine - One of the best performances of the festival for me. A stunning voice (her radio voice is once of the sexiest around as well), and a genuinely natural brilliant performer. Her cover of You've Got The Love went down brilliantly with the crowd as expected. Friendly Fires - Again, in my top selections of the festival. Jump in the Pool and Paris were huge, with the rest of their set-list being top drawer as well. I'd comfortably pay money to go and watch them all over again. Caught a bit of Jamie T afterwards but had to leave after four tracks to get a decent-ish spot for Kings of Leon. He opened with St. Christopher, which was fucking brilliant. Kings of Leon - I couldn't help but come away a little underwhelmed by the whole thing. It's not like they did anything wrong either (except miss out King of the Rodeo), and the whole spectacle was pretty impressive. Delivered about three emotional speeches to the crowd which was a bit weird too. Probably trying to compensate for the whole Reading fiasco. Probably won't bother seeing them again.
Sods Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Great weekend, highlights were Prodigy, Gallows and Enter Shikari. The gallows were fantastic, really starting to like Frank Carter, massive respect. Bizzle was brilliant, i actually enjoyed the arctic monkeys, alex was absolutely hammered. Dance tent was worth checking out and will definately be making it my third next year.
C-man Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I reckon twice the safe amount of people have been in your mums inner ring. You've just talked your way out of a mean spaghetti bolognaise. From Reading: The Horrors - I saw them two years ago and thought they were shit but loved Count in Fives, so I thought I'd give them another go. Turns out I'm just not a fan. Jack Penate - Really enjoyed his show. He got the crowd going well and I liked his energy. Not the greatest fan in the world but he was worth seeing. Florence and the Machine - She's mental. Climbed the pillar of the NME tent for no apparent reason, she wasn't even wearing a skirt to look up. Nice voice, entertaining-ish. Kings of Leon - Shame they've let the fame go to their head. They can hardly release mainstream singles and then complain that people only came to see them. Patrick Wolf - Only saw him to be near the front for TCV - he is really odd. Them Crooked Vultures - If there was one word to describe these, it'd be Muscley. Josh Homme, John Paul Jones and Dave Grohl all one the same stage at the same time. Quality stuff. Anyone else see them? One sad thing was the rimming DG got from the crowd - every time he was shown on the big screen the crowd chanted his name. I'd argue JPJ was/is the better musician. The Prodigy - Looked decent but couldn't enjoy it early on with the crowd trouble. Looked mental in there once I'd got out but the sound was shit. Yet again the soundman at Reading needs shooting. The flare that went off was amazing and the circle pit with a guy with a Rey Mysterio mask on standing in the middle was hilarious. Arctic Monkeys - Amazing. Highlight of the weekend, but then again it was always going to be. Pity the crowd were boring fucks. Deadmau5 - Only caught the last song 'cos the official programme fooked up the time. Oh well, it happened to be 'I remember' anyway - looked awesome. Brand New - Sat at the back for these, people give them rave reviews but I think they're gash. Vampire Weekend - Probably my second favourite performance of the weekend. Only saw 2 of their songs last year so to catch their whole set this year was a must. New songs sound good and the crowd was brilliant. Lady Sovereign - I was front row for the S-O-V and she was amazing. Weathered the early storm of bottles easily and won the crowd over. She looks completely different to 3 years ago and even looks vaguely attractive now. Bloc Party - Still shit live. Radiohead - Sat at the back 'cos I don't really know them - all I can say was that their visuals looked amazing but they sounded a bit boring at times.
Finchy Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Saturday:Arctic Monkeys - amazing, with a shite crowd. The Prodigy - fooking rubbish. The only way The Prodigy were rubbish was if you deteste their music. That was a flawless set, and if you're a fan it was pant destroying form. I think it's unfair to have a go at the fans for being a bit shite during the Monkeys, let's remember not everyone is like us and they haven't had the album for weeks to learn the songs, the set was full of them. Even if people did get the album when it came out they've only had a few days to learn the songs. I think the reaction to the old songs people knew proves this was the reason. For me.... Manc Orchestra - One of the most passionate performances of the weekend, stunning band. New Found Glory - Sh*te, used to love them as a young teenage skater boy, but boy the singer is bollocks live. Friendly Fires - What an atmosphere that was! This band are really growing on me. Jamie T - Not as good as 07, didn't seem as up for it, but he has great songs so it was still great live. KOL - Coonts, why the fook do they think they can have a go at the fans when they play the few classics they did play at half the speed and without any passion whatsoever. If you're annoyed you only get the Only By The Night fans at your gigs, then play less of it and more classics to get rid of them. Delphic - Dragged on a lot, few good songs. Enter Shikari - Amazing as always. The Courteeners - Meh Ian Brown - Love the guy, but this was awful. His voice, his choice of songs, everything. Very annoyed by it. Maximo Park - Only there to get good place for The Prodigy, was ok I suppose, played their songs well just not much of a fan. The Prodigy - Insane. No other word to describe it. Arctic Monkeys - Brilliant, it changed my opinion of the new songs, it's really growing on me, they played them so well and I like the dark twist they put on the older songs. Missed out Fake Tales tho which really annoyed me. Titus Andronicus - One of the best albums I've heard in a long time, I enjoyed the gig because I knew all the songs, I would think it didn't seem too good if you didn't know them. The Xx - Stunning album, and a very good performance, I don't think it was the right atmosphere for the music though. If they were playing at night it would be so much better. The View - Pretty solid performance, sound was a bit sh*t though, I think it was the wind to be fair. Gaslight Anthem - Definitely one of my favourite bands right now, this was a great gig to be in the pit for, great singalongs. Gallows - If you haven't seen this band live, you have to. It's definitely an experience, even if you hate the music. Loved what he was saying about the NME too. Radiohead My cock is still out. Should have seen a few more bands I think ha.
C-man Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Delphic - Dragged on a lot, few good songs. Nice to see Fabien escaped King's pocket in time for the weekend.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Ian Brown - My mate's thought he was absolute gash, and his performance was pretty poor to be fair. I think anybody buying tickets to see him these days would be doing it purely for old times sake. His dancing is embarassing. Joe. Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Didn't clash with Radiohead did he? He was on at 3:20 at Reading Yeah, he got moved down the order at Reading because of Creamfields.
Libertine Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Titus Andronicus - One of the best albums I've heard in a long time, I enjoyed the gig because I knew all the songs, I would think it didn't seem too good if you didn't know them.
Finchy Posted 2 September 2009 Posted 2 September 2009 Mint band! What a tune Titus Andronicus is. Only just read about Poo Girl at Leeds fest haha, that is revolting.
Hugo Sanchez Posted 2 September 2009 Posted 2 September 2009 The Artic Monkeys were slated, A shame and all. Their first album was ok.
