Guest Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 Does anyone use shorthand? Which system do you use, and why? Is it easy to learn? Could I, for example, learn it during the summer months in between courses? Or should I just learn to write quicker? <_<
Bert Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 A woman of your stature should be able to master it in no time Lease.

welck12 Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 Just use your own version of shorthand, as far as i know there is no real types, i could be wrong though. I just use a mishmash of shorthand that i know works for me. But writing quicker always helps

Corky Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 use text speak????? But not with so many question marks
StanSP Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 Is it essential that you learn shorthand?? Obviously, if you're in the journalism industry then it would be wise to learn it. But otherwise you could use a mix of shorthand/normal writing. As long as you understand it yourself later I guess that's all that matters.

I also like a challenge.

Joe. Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 I should really try and start learning this soon. Got it all to look forward to next year (all being well and that). I'd learn it Lisa, there's plenty of decent books around for it.
Lillehamring Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 i'm guessing, as usual, the man in the know would be thracian....
StanSP Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 I need to learn it too really.I still haven't worked out predictive texting. I hate this. I sometimes try and go a day using it, but it just gets on my nerves.

As far as I can tell from those who do use it, it's a skill you need to use very regularly to remain 'fluent' at it. Having said that, if you did want the challenge of learning it, I'd say you could easily learn over the summer months - just buy a decent book and self-teach. To be honest, I'd recommend developing your own format that suits you (partly text speak, combined with 'meaningful squiggles') and use longhand for more technical/detailed terms.
StanSP Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 is all i have to say on the matter really Yeah, my eyes are fooked now
cisono Posted 12 March 2009 Posted 12 March 2009 Does anyone use shorthand?Which system do you use, and why? Is it easy to learn? Could I, for example, learn it during the summer months in between courses? Or should I just learn to write quicker? <_< I studied shorthand for 3 years in secondary school. I studied the Cima system, a method used only in Italy, so that would not be much help to you. Other methods are used internationally. It does take some time to learn a method properly (so that you can write quickly and also read back what you have written ), but perhaps in the meantime you could just learn/use abbreviations of common words and phrases? Personally, I only ever used it when forced or adapted some ideas from it (like incorporating the shorthand for "zione" or other word endings). However, I am sure you could learn it if you wanted to. I was only 15 when they forced me to learn it and I frankly was not that motivated to at the time. Example of cima system (85 words per minute): The "not complete" idiot's guide to alternative handwriting and shorthand systems for dummies: http://www.alysion.org/handy/althandwriting.htm
Guest Posted 12 March 2009 Posted 12 March 2009 Thanks for all the tips, people. I shall look into it further when I have finished my exams.
