Teeno Posted 22 April 2009 Posted 22 April 2009 When I ventured into Melton on Monday to get the PROMOTION papers, there were St George's flags hanging above all the shops in the town centre. Good old M town, makes me proud
Monk Posted 22 April 2009 Posted 22 April 2009 When I ventured into Melton on Monday to get the PROMOTION papers, there were St George's flags hanging above all the shops in the town centre. You're from melton?
Katy Posted 22 April 2009 Posted 22 April 2009 You're from melton? Nope, I live near Grantham and was born in Aylestone, Leicester Melton, is the nearest big place that sells PROMOTION newspapers and that's why I was there.
Fosse Boy Posted 22 April 2009 Posted 22 April 2009 Dewi Saint and Saint Patrick, both Welsh. And George is the patron saint of Russia. There's statues of him everywhere you go in Moscow. I thought Paddy was Cornish by birth.
Ross-Kemp Posted 22 April 2009 Posted 22 April 2009 Got the day off work, on the piss all day. Only chance I get at celebrating being English anymore.
Thracian Posted 22 April 2009 Posted 22 April 2009 We're off to a special event at Tamworth Castle with my youngest grandson and his dad. http://www.ents24.com/web/event/1631787/St_Georges_Day.html
ASH17LCFC Posted 22 April 2009 Posted 22 April 2009 I will be celebrating, fook all them PC nobs and don't listen to the Finners he's a idiot. He slates England and loves Wales yet lives in England like most Welsh people do
Thracian Posted 22 April 2009 Posted 22 April 2009 I think it should be celebrated, but I always think the ones who do celebrate it tend to be middle englanders who's attitude is questionable. I also find it hard to celebrate a saint who is also patron saint of many many other countries, hardly seems unique to england does it?, and isnt that the whole point?. Jesus was said to have been born in Bethlehem, Palestine. But celebration of that event is not confined to one country. If people of one country want to be associated with someone that doesn't mean that others in other countries won't feel the same.
Finnegan Posted 22 April 2009 Posted 22 April 2009 I thought Paddy was Cornish by birth. It's debated whether or not he was from St. David's (ironically) or from Strathclyde. "Wales" didn't exist back then but both of those birthplaces would have made him "Welsh" by modern standards. Strathclyde was a 'Welsh' (ancient Brython) speaking celtic community that got isolated from the Welsh and Cornish kingdoms by the growth of what becomes England. I will be celebrating, fook all them PC nobs and don't listen to the Finners he's a idiot. He slates England and loves Wales yet lives in England like most Welsh people do One of these days you're going to try and wind me up and not end up looking like a tit. Hell you might even succeed. I quite like England as a place to live goes and I've a love for all of my English friends. I actually frequently speak out in favour of the English celebrating St George's day. I'd much rather the English take pride in their own unique identity than force "Britishness" on the unwanting Scots, Welsh and Irish. Oh, and we've been through this before - less than a quarter of Britain's "Welsh" people live in England, over two million more live in Wales. The United States even has a larger Welsh population than England. Try educating yourself, you never know, you might enjoy it.
Smerklo Posted 22 April 2009 Posted 22 April 2009 No doubt I'll have a pint of Bombardier, and I'll fly (or hang ) the flag in the window! Then in the evening its off to AC/DC at the NEC Happy St. George's Day!
BoneDog Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 I will be celebrating, fook all them PC nobs and don't listen to the Finners he's a idiot. He slates England and loves Wales yet lives in England like most Welsh people do
