Pissed At Work

One in three employees admitted going to work with a hangover and more than one in 10 has been drunk at their desk, a new poll says.

Staff said they made mistakes, struggled to concentrate and had to go home early as a result of drinking, reports the BBC.

Four out of five employers said alcohol was the biggest threat to the well-being of their staff, according to the survey for Norwich Union Healthcare.

One thousand people and 250 businesses were interviewed about drinking habits for the survey. Of those who had had a hangover or been drunk at work, 85% confirmed it affected their performance or mood.

More than a third (36%) found it hard to concentrate, 35% were less productive, 42% felt tired to the point of being sleepy and 25% did the minimum amount of work and went home as soon as possible.

Forty-one per cent of people working in media and creative jobs said they had been to work while still drunk - four times the average.

The number who admitted to have been drunk at work was also high in the construction industry (24%), professional and business services (23%), and information technology (15%).

Don Shenker, from Alcohol Concern, said that with so many people drinking at harmful levels, it was not surprising that it was having an effect on the workplace.

"After-work or lunchtime drinks are the norm for many and in some cases this is promoted by companies as a way to build teams or just as the way to do business."

Cary Cooper, Professor of Organisational Psychology and Health at Lancaster University, said excessive drinking was a manifestation of stress, and it was endemic in certain industries.

Sent to me by a work collegue - whats he trying to say?

Pissed - Once, Pissed from the night before, Was all over the place, I had to get a lift to work as I felt unsafe to drive still well over the limit.

And I went to the pub at dinners on Friday's occasionally but only for one (Maybe 2) pints, I'm sure I wouldn't be insured to use the saw regardless of whether it was one or two anyway

Hungover - Many a time. Horrible. icon8.gif

Not surprised by that one bit, always feel like shit friday mornings if I put in a thursday night shift but can't say I've ever been wankered whilst on the Job.

Worst I've ever felt was starting at 8 the morning after the Hartlepool JPT match after getting in around 4ish. I was asleep at the pc on off all day, with the dude next to me waking me if only I'd have hit the z key once down he'd maybe have got the message.

Being drunk at work is sheer bliss, particularly when you work in a quiet betting shop at night and alone. Next to a pub. Only one thing can happen really. God I love the summertime!

I'm hungover many a day at work, the other placement students even look down on me.

I've also been drunk at work before, work lunches at the pub = fun times.

My excuse is that im an alcoholic who lives across the road from a pub.

pretty much everyday for about 2.5 years, cut down to once a week at the moment. But saying that the last couple of months have been quite heavy.

Doesnt say much about me does it?

When I first started working in financial services I would have 3 or 4 pints at lunch time fairly regularly. I think it didn't matter then because I did have many responsibilities, and that's what everyone else seemed to be doing anyway.

I'm too scared to have even a pint during my break now

Worst I've ever felt was when we played Chelsea away in the cup and didn't arrive back home till about 5am. I seem to remember there was an accident on M1 near Northampton. I had about 2 hours sleep before I got up again for an 8am start. I was well & truly fucked.

Hardly ever do that - I'm mostly just enormeously tired and fight a certain sleepiness during the day. Thus I force my eyes wide open for around eight hours a day... :|

Fun thing is, there's about a dozen or so people in my office with the same... err... condition. lol

Try to focus and stare into each others eyes that way... First one to snooze to lose.

Night out, 2 hours sleep, 3 hour drive to Bristol, all day presentations, 3 hour drive home.

Painful day. Dangerous drive and far too much Red bull to be healthy.

In my younger day me and my flatmate used to always go out late on Thusday nights and then onto the Blues parties so would, rather than get a couple of hours sleep, stay up all night and go straight to work in the morning. It was hell on earth at times luckily I finished early on Fridays.

Couldnt do it now though it would literally kill me lol

When I worked at Argoos I went out on a Friday night thinking me and my mates were eating before hand but I got into town and was told they had already eaten at home! This meant I was drinking on empty and moving onto 9 pints with work at 9AM the next morning wasn't the best idea! Got up early enough but about 15 minutes into the day I had to run to the back of the store to be sick in the disabled loos but they were locked so I ended up puking up outside the toilet!

Then just as I recovered the cleaner walks out of the toilet and looks at me in disgust! lol The timing couldn't have been better. Only one colleague found out so it was all OK and I felt alright after that!

Was really hungover a few times during placement but got away with that most times.
