Ricky Sbragia resigns.

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn: "You bet your life Ricky Sbragia is staying on, he has a job here for life. We will see an awful lot more of him at this club in the future. [American investor] Ellis Short has had a ball today and went through a lot of emotion. We'll concentrate on that in the coming weeks but I believe something very positive is about to happen. As for Boro, Steve Gibson is the role model and wrote the blueprint on how to be a proper chairman. Alan Shearer is a proper gentleman too and I am gutted for both of them, but they will bounce back - they are too big and too strong not to."
Sbragia resigns from Sunderland

Sbragia took over from Roy Keane in December 2008

Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia has resigned from the club despite the Black cats avoiding relegation.

Sbragia stood down immediately after the side secured their Premier league status, despite losing 3-2 to Chelsea.

"I spoke with chairman Niall Quinn this week and I think we need a bigger name to carry the club further. I've done everything I came to," said Sbragia.

"I've kept the club in the Premier League. I would like to have done it better but I'm pleased we stayed up."

Sbragia took over as boss following the departure of Roy Keane in December 2008.

He initially looked set to guide the club comfortably clear of relegation with two wins in his first three games.

But the Black Cats suffered a dip in form which has saw them win just three more league games under Sbragia before the last day drama against Chelsea kept them up.

Sunderland are expected to have major finances available for strengthening during the summer and Sbragia felt that he had achieved his aim of Premier League survival and that it was now time to step aside.

"I've loved it," added Sbragia. "There's been a lot of pressure - we started so well and maybe got carried away, losing our focus - but I always thought we were good enough to stay in the Premier League.

"I would like to have finished it with a win but I'm pleased for the players and my staff.

"We've got a foundation and I'll be thoroughly enjoying seeing Sunderland move up that table.

"I'll come back in the next couple of days and tidy things up but I'll enjoy Sunday night and I'll look forward to some time on my own reflecting on what's happened in the last five months."

More to follow.

Good shout Mr Quinn.

Good shout Mr Quinn.

Bad shout Tevez.

Quinn said that 20 minutes after Sbragia resigned, he meant Sbragia had a job for life as a coach or another part of the club.

Found it.

I too was confused by Quinn saying that despite reports Sbragia has resigned.

Makes more sense what maddog said though.

 That's not something you hear everyday :D

Fairplay to Sbragia, he knew the job was a bit too much for him and has given Sunderland ample opportunity to get someone in for the new season.

This.

They can't afford to select the wrong candidate in the summer, otherwise they'll be in another relegation battle next season.

I'm a cynical bastard. I reckon it was just a case of jumping before he got pushed.

SSN just said a rumour of Gordon Strachen taking over is doing the rounds tonight, and will be in the papers tomorrow.

Would be a good job for him. Celtic is a nothing job. First or the worst.

Sunderland want Bruce

I thought they wanted a big name? Don't get me wrong, I think Bruce is a very decent manager, but not exactly the big name to attract the best players as Quinn wanted.

A hell of alot bigger than Ricky Sbragia.

The potential of the club could be massive. Bruce would be a great appointment.

It's a big step up from anywhere he's managed to date.

But his record in English football is a lot better than Gordon Strachan's.
