Port Vale have appointed Micky Adams as their new manager.

The 47-year-old, who parted company with Brighton in February, beat off competition from another vastly experienced candidate John Ward.

Adams, who is Vale's fourth manager in the space of 21 months, replaces Dean Glover, who left the club on 2 May.

The League Two side hope Adams' record of having three times won promotion, twice from the Football League's lowest tier, will rub off in the Potteries.

Vale from finished 18th in League Two last season under Glover, in the club's first campaign at that level in 23 years.

Glover's reign at Vale Park ended following the season's final game. And he has since severed all ties with the club after 18 years as player, coach and manager.

Sheffield-born Adams, who started his 20-year playing career at Gillingham, made over 500 appearances in his various stays with eight different clubs - including a short spell with Vale's neighbours Stoke City.

He then embarked on a managerial career that, following his arrivals at Vale, will now also have taken in eight clubs in 13 years.

Adams started at Fulham in August 1996, leading the Cottagers to promotion from Division Three in his first season.

He then left Craven Cottage in September 12997 to re-emerge at Swansea a fortnight later. But he spent just three games at the Vetch Field before joining Brentford for the rest of the 1997/98 season.

After going to Nottingham Forest as number two to Dave Bassett, he took over as caretaker boss following his sacking in January 1999, only to then make way for Ron Atkinson at the City Ground.

He re-emerged with Brighton in April 1999. And, in his second full season with the Seagulls, he won the Division Three title again in May 2001.

He then linked up again with Bassett at Leicester, once again taking over from him just before the Foxes were relegated in April 2002.

In his first full season in charge, Adams took Leicester back to the top flight - his biggest achievement to date. But he left the Walkers Stadium in October 2004.

He was then back in football just down the M69 for two years at Coventry City in January 2005.

After his sacking at the Ricoh in January 2007, he was without a managerial role for 16 months until returning for a second spell at Brighton in May 2008. But, with the Seagulls struggling, that ended in February.

Good Luck Micky

I liked Adams at Leicester, at the time I didn't think he should go but he was forced out. (I know others on the board feel strongly that he should have gone though)

I liked Adams, he got us promoted in a difficult period for the club.

I can't remember the stat exactly but in the prem if the games had of finished on 80 minutes we would have finished 8th or something.

Quite remarkable considering we went down.

Anyway, good luck Micky

You're 'reet Tevez. Micky Adams like sto talk about Micky Adams and how his lads played like Micky Adams did. Micky Adams will make Port Vale a Micky Adams side with bags of potential. Micky Adams isn't here to mess about.

Should be managing at a higher level than that, I still struggle to comprehend why the majority of Leicester fans called for his head when we were in the top half of the championship, especially given the collapse after his departure.

We were in sharp decline, though, and continued that way right until Nigel Pearson took over.

The stresses of the previous season had clearly told on him.

I liked him, we all had a pop at him when we went down to the Championship and were 11th after a dozen or so games, but look how badly things became after he left. I am a little surprised he's not done as well at his subsequent clubs though.

Micky Adams: nice bloke but who would hire such a quitter? Give it 6 months or so and Micky will walk if Louis Dodds misses a penalty or something.

Because he'd taken us as far as he could, he was running out of ideas and we weren't going to improve under him.

And at the time we didn't know what was going to happen over the next 3-and-a-half years did we? ;)
