Short but Sexy [Nussul]

Recommended Posts

1. Flyleaf - So I thought (Alt.V)

Knew this song already, although only had a crap demo version of it. It’s still rather poor quality. There are several other Flyleaf songs I prefer to this though. It’s a bit meh, and her slightly dodgy voice shines through a lot in parts in this one. But it’s easily listenable.

2. Joshua Radin - Amy's Song

Nice and gentle guitar, and a decent voice. It passed me a bit by though, not much was happening. But I know plenty of people that would most likely love this

3. The Robot Ate Me - Bad Feelings

Hmm quirky little song. I don’t dislike it, nor does it stir anything up. I’m hoping for a bit more energy soon, ‘cause I’ll be nodding off it continues in this vein :P

4. Tony Laf - I'm Good

Dodgy quality, but a nice guitar again and a strong voice, not unlike #2. Reminds me a bit of Tracy Chapman actually…

5. Water Flame - Glorious Morning

Ohh, strings… finally a bit of energy? Yes! Haha, I swear this sounds like one of the songs from one of my favourite games on the old SNES (Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 2)… enjoyed it for that simple reason

6. Badly Drawn Boy - All possibilities

I’ve not heard anything by BDD since Disillusion was a hit, and this sounds quite similar (youtube version). Oh wait a second, of course I know this one! The chorus brought it back to me. It’s ok, but I’m no great fan of his tired voice. It doesn’t work all that well with the dynamic trumpets I think. But a decent song nonetheless

7. Joe Satriani - Chords of life

Wahey, the Satch. Was expecting this to be in the direction of Satch Boogie or Summer Song. See the comments re: Buckethead on Libertine’s mix, although he’s not that bad with the wanking in this song. One of the more mellow songs I’ve heard him do, with the exception that minute in the middle. Decent effort, really.

8. Hamfatter - The Girl I love

Decent song again here, even though indie doesn’t do much for me in general. The brass makes this a little different.

9. Neon Neon - Belfast

A bit of a non-entity. Nothing stood out for me, whether good or bad….

10. Darren Styles – Skydivin

Oh no no no no. This let the mix down big time :P That was not what I expected…

11. Maija Vilkkumaa - Ingalsin Laura

Finnish rock? And it’s not Lordi? A bit generic, and the voice was nothing great either. I even found the riffs quite average, but it was easily the best part of the song. You obviously chose this for obscurity :P

12. Good Charlotte - Thank You Mom

“Lifestyles…” could get me going, even if it was rather annoying. But generally, I associate Good Charlotte with generic heavy youth rock. This has been done so many times before, and there’s little to distinguish this song from efforts of other similar bands. Still, I’d rather have the mix end with this song than any of the previous two!

-----------------------------

I’d say this mix was pretty safe, with the exception of tracks 10 and 11. In retrospect, it was probably a wise move :P Apart from those two tracks, there weren’t really many highs or lows for me; the Satch probably shaded it for the best track IMO. But that alone tells me you’re on the right path, so I’m looking forward to your next effort ;)

Which ones? I like There For You and Red Sam

right here goes....

I will warn you though this isn't probably isn't going to be pretty from the the first glance at the artists I wasn't even syre if I wanted to download it but thought that would be a bit rude.

1. Flyleaf - So I thought (Alt.V)

Don't like at all really not my thing

2. Joshua Radin - Amy's Song

it's alright but missing a bit of edge, bit middle of the road really

3. The Robot Ate Me - Bad Feelings

This is better actually but only just

4. Tony Laf - I'm Good

terrible really really not my thing

5. Water Flame - Glorious Morning

sounds like something from Final Fantasy not my thing

6. Badly Drawn Boy - All possibilities - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - if this song doesn't play, click here.

BDB Passed me by a little just doesn't grab me

7. Joe Satriani - Chords of life

I agree with Mark yes he can play guitar but endless solos really don't cut it for me

8. Hamfatter - The Girl I love

Rubbish Band, Rubbish Songs even Peter Jones millions can't sell these to me a seriously below average indie band

9. Neon Neon - Belfast

:bounce::banana::bounce::banana:

I love Neon Neon another track may well appear on my mix!!!

10. Darren Styles - Skydivin

Can't stand Hardcore or whatever it's called these days had a mate who was really into this stuff Force & Styles etc I went to an all night thing with him once have never been so bored in my life

11. Maija Vilkkumaa - Ingalsin Laura

good god no...

12. Good Charlotte - Thank You Mom.

can't stand Good Charlotte they along with the likes of Sum41 etc are pretty much everything I hate about corporate major label alternative bandwagon jumping music I couldn't stand them when they first appeared or when recently they have decided to totally change their music and style to try and flog more drivel

Sorry may have sounded a bit harsh but most of it really wasn't my thing

Yours downloaded first so here we go:

1. Flyleaf - So I thought (Alt.V)

Bit too sickly sweet for me. Sounds like the soundtrack to the teenage angst I never had. I can imagine this is all the rage amongst the younger population. That's not to sound patronising but it's about as far away from what I listen to as you could probably get. And it goes on too long. 4

2. Joshua Radin - Amy's Song

Tame. I mean, this is a nice enough song and all, but where's the meat, the depth. It's all a bit wishy washy. "I wanna be anyone but me". Yeah, ok Josh. Again, another one for the weepy teenage crowd. Sorry. 4

3. The Robot Ate Me - Bad Feelings

I already knew you were an intelligent and insightful chap from your posts elsewhere. Now I'm thinking your a VERY sensitive, emotional chap as well!! This is a bit better, bit quirky. Again my problem is the lack of substance. No real depth to the song. Improvement on the first two though. 5

4. Tony Laf - I'm Good

I'm now really looking for something to get my teeth, or ears, stuck into. But this song isn't it. More emotional stuff. I hope you're not offended. I rarely like any music accept for my own! It's a decent enough song but all I can really picture right now is Dawson's Creek. 4

5. Water Flame - Glorious Morning

Err. What the fuck? 4

6. Badly Drawn Boy - All possibilities

Nice tune. Rolls along at a good tempo. Heard bits and bobs by BDB, never really investigated though. Unlikely to after this but I tapped my feet and it was pleasant. 6

7. Joe Satriani - Chords of life

You're on a roll mate. I like this one too. Clearly the guy has played a bit before. Finnegan said I regarded the guitar as an abomination - not when it's played like this I don't. No vocals also earns brownie points. Highlight so far. 7

8. Hamfatter - The Girl I love

I knew I wouldn't like this before I even heard it. About as generic as indie gets. 3

9. Neon Neon - Belfast

I own this album, I think it was recommended on here but I still haven't given it a proper listen. Proper 80's feel to it, bordering on ultra cool, I reckon this would sond half decent in a club. 6

10. Darren Styles - Skydivin

Euro trance-pop. Putting aside any tact I may have been showing over the past reviews - mate, this is fucking horrendous. I want to die. 1

11. Maija Vilkkumaa - Ingalsin Laura

Thank fuck for the sound of a guitar. I think I'll have nightmares about that last tune for weeks. However it appears we are now listening to the Serbian Eurovision entry. Not keen. 3

12. Good Charlotte - Thank You Mom.

You know what I really do appreciate the sentiment in this song even if I don't appreciate the music particularly. Still, nice words, fair play. 6

==========

I hope you don't hate me after reading this mate. I'm just being honest, maybe I could have been more tactful but fuck it, the important thing is you enjoy what you listen to regardless of what opinionated electronic dance snobs like me say. And I've always said that if you take just 1 track from the compilation then your work is done and I really did enjoy that Satriani tune as well as the Neon Neon one. Cheers mate, and sorry if I was harsh.

Overall 4

No worries at all, rather than try and please people I went for more of a 'this is what I listen to that you might not have heard' and hoped somewhere there'd be something that each of you liked.

Already I've got songs in mind that I wish I'd left out etc, but I guess that's the point of a first time. I know what to include less of next time :P

Thanks for reviewing.

Here we go and I'd like to say before I start that this mix probably is the one that has most surpassed expectations. No insult Nussul, but when I was your age my musical taste was horrendous and I expect it of all teenagers! :P

1. Flyleaf - So I thought (Alt.V)

I like this. Nice chilled and unusual vocals which I'm not sure are male or female (sod it - wiki time!) The female vocals  are quite unusual here. Nicely ambient and chilled and I could listen to some more stuff like that.

2. Joshua Radin - Amy's Song

This is a lovely little song and I always say you can't beat a bit of slide guitar. If you like this, you might like the J Tillman track on my mix coming up.

3. The Robot Ate Me - Bad Feelings

Yeah, a nice song that I like a lot. Simple, but interesting harmonies. Best track on the mix. Top notch!

4. Tony Laf - I'm Good

This could be any MOR band in the Live Lounge at Radio 1 (with Jo Whiley sucking up to them.)

5. Water Flame - Glorious Morning

I think I saw someone else say that this sounded like a video game tune and I can see what they mean. If it was a video game tune, it would be quite a good one though.

6. Badly Drawn Boy - All possibilities

I didn't bother looking this up. Badly Drawn Boy I know. I don't dislike him, but he's never moved me enough to make a purchase

7. Joe Satriani - Chords of life

I am aware that Mr Satriani is considered to be a great guitarist, often by people who play guitar (I don't so what do I know :dunno: ) But if he's so brilliant, why does he play so much tripe? I had to turn this off halfway through at the risk of throwing my Walkman at the wall.

8. Hamfatter - The Girl I love

"She wants to lose it on the floor." Erm, thanks for telling us mate, but I'd rather not know.

9. Neon Neon - Belfast

This is great! Nice little tune, very 80s synth-pop. Like Human League, but with someone who can sing.

10. Darren Styles - Skydivin

This is the oh dear track - every mix has at least one - but this is oh dear oh dear oh dear. I'm just glad this is from last year because this is just the kind of track that could get to be a summer no. 1 (What is it about hot weather that encourages people to go out and buy especially crap music?)

11. Maija Vilkkumaa - Ingalsin Laura

I try not to read anyone else's reviews before writing mine, so as not to be influenced by what other people say, but in this case... what James said.

12. Good Charlotte - Thank You Mom.

Urge to kill.... rising. The normal reaction I have to Good Charlotte. I'm sure the words are well meant, but seriously!

*******************************************************************************

Cheers Nussul, enjoyed that and as I said, better than I expected!

Tracks 1 to 4

I can't really distinguish between the first four songs, they all seem to be gentle acoustic strums from people who want to kill themselves.

Track 5

Like the intro to number 5, the first 40 seconds or so, then it sounds a bit Irish, then a bit Eurovision, then a bit Irish Eurovision, then like the theme tune to a daytime quiz show, then nearly like an actual song for a bit before it ended short of two minutes. Bizarre. Quite liked it in an odd sort of way though.

Badly Drawn Boy - All Possibilities

I like Badly Drawn Boy. The Hour of Bewilderbeast is one of my favourite albums to go back to after a year or so not listening to it. Recently revisited and loved it as always. This is alright, although spoilt a bit now by the Comet advert and Edith ****ing Bowman. Think it's that one, doing this from memory cos this one didn't work and couldn't be bothered to download it again (sorry, 3 mixes to do tonight, short on time!)

Joe Satriani

Rock instrumentals are weird. Just sounds like it needs vocals. I like a vast array of instrumental tracks but these rock guitarists that put out instrumentals don't really work for me. Sounds like a soft porn soundtrack in the main, let's face it.

Hamfatter - The Girl I Love

The whole idea behind these is terrible, and I've never heard of them before, I'm just going by what other posters have said about how they sprung up. It's alright though, but I can't see why anyone would pay money towards keeping these doing for any particular reason, let alone thousands of pounds.

Neon Neon - Belfast

Doesn't grab me. Hasn't quite got the oomph that it could have. Gruff Rhys has phoned the vocals in and the whole thing could do with a bit more meat to it.

Darren Styles - Skydivin

Well there's four minutes of my life I'm never getting back. (Well, two and a half and that was generous - absolutely terrible)

Maija Vilkkumaa - Ingalsin Laura

lol From the ridiculous to the sublime... possibly. I'm not sure. It might just seem good compared to that last crock of shit. However, this has definitely got a certain charm. The foreign vocals make it (Finnish I guess?) and it reminds me a little bit of Dengue Fever which is a stupid thing to say but it does. lol Guitar solo. I like it.

Good Charlotte

Well... no.

---

Sorry, that looks like a bit of a lazy review. I did listen to it all the way through though (with the exception of the end of the worst song) and it was interesting to hear. As JTB said, not really my thing and don't want to slate it hugely for the sake of it but some nice bits and as you say, you might do one or two things differently next time.

Apologies for taking so long, I've genuinely been extremely busy over the last couple of weeks with exams and work. Well, here it is finally...

1. Flyleaf - So I thought (Alt.V)

This just reminds me way too much of those Youtube videos where emo kids make a slideshow using pictures of either a) their boyfriend/girlfriend or b) Japanese manga. I may have liked this when I was about 15, but not so much these days unfortunately. And I don't know whether it's just me or not, but I think the vocals are actually quite poor?

2. Joshua Radin - Amy's Song

Heard a little bit of Joshua Radin before ('Closer' and 'Winter' I believe), of which I actually quite enjoyed. However, I can't help but feel he's only worth listening to in small doses, and when you're in the right mood for it. I suppose that's the same for all music though... Not bad, I might listen to it again when I feel like it.

3. The Robot Ate Me - Bad Feelings

Not a big fan of this to be honest. It sounds like a lot of stuff I heard on these indie/rock playlists I download and quickly delete from the itunes library.

4. Tony Laf - I'm Good

I just can't help but listen to this and be annoyed by the singer. The riff kind of reminded me of 'Here Without You' by Three Doors Down (a song that I think you'd like if you haven't heard it already). It's not particularly very musically inspiring for me.

5. Water Flame - Glorious Morning

Aha. That's all I can add for this. It's just something I can't really take very seriously. It's probably just the odd fusion of some of the noises that gets me.

6. Badly Drawn Boy - All Possibilities

I'm still waiting for Edith Bowman's voice to kick in now about the brilliant offers that Comet have to offer this summer. I never knew this song was by them actually, learnt something new here anyway. Badly Drawn Boy are a band I haven't really ever got in to, which is a shame because I've never heard a track by them which I've disliked. I should get onto it really...

7. Joe Satriani - Chords of life

I had to learn a Joe Satriani song once on guitar, Tears in the Rain I think it was. Aside from that I've never really listened to much of his other stuff, which is a bit bad really considering his reputation as a musician. I enjoyed this actually, the kind of thing I could only ever achieve on Guitar Hero though unfortunately.

8. Hamfatter - The Girl I love

You download the Indie/Rock playlists too? I've found some gems off of these before, after sifting through a lop of the crap that comes with them. I actually had this song beforehand, although it's not been played in my library yet. They're obviously going to get the publicity after Dragons Den, but they haven't really done a lot with it. Reminds me a bit of The Strokes, which isn't a bad thing.

9. Neon Neon - Belfast

Quite liked this one actually, sounds like the sort of thing that probably would have fitted into my own mix somewhere. One to keep I think

10. Darren Styles - Skydivin

You have no idea how much I dislike this sort of thing. It's like the gruesome lovechild of Basshunter and Scooter or something; horrible. Oh dear me this is painful to listen to. How long left? 1:58?! Screw that, skipped. Sorry Nussul!

11. Maija Vilkkumaa - Ingalsin Laura

I was going to say this sounded like the perfect Eurovision song, only to find with a bit of research that it actually was an entry this year. It's not something I'd choose to listen to again, although by Eurovision standards it's not too bad.

12. Good Charlotte - Thank You Mom.

It's bad enough liking one Good Charlotte song (The Anthem is a guilty pleasure of mine unfortunately), let alone two. Thankfully I didn't like this one, I just can't take them seriously as a band anymore (well, since 2002 anyway).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The moral of this mix? No Darren Styles next time Nuss... :P
