Its pretty well known in the industry that immigrants take on a huge amount of jobs others wouldn't, its been like that for decades. But more and more skilled workers are needed in the NHS due to shortages.

Professional and managerial workers from overseas contribute £54.3bn a year to the UK economy, research out today reveals.

The study, by professional services firm Harvey Nash and the Centre for Economic and Business Research, clearly shows that the UK is now heavily dependent on its migrants.

The massive figure comes in terms of additional value contributed to the economy. The benefits of inward migration extend not only to plugging skills gaps, but also by the value added by migrants spending their cash in the UK on consumer items - known as the "multiplier effect".

Albert Ellis, chief executive of Harvey Nash, said: "Economic migration has many detractors, but clearly what we are seeing here is unquestionably positive and beneficial to the UK as a whole. In fact, the UK could not do without its influx of economic migrants."

He said many sectors, such as the NHS, would cease to operate effectively without the help of migrant workers.

"The NHS takes many thousands of migrants as workers - more than 30% of NHS nursing roles are held by recent migrants to the UK. So the effect we are seeing is not a temporary blip - the UK is vastly dependent on its migrants to sustain its steady economic growth and will be for the foreseeable future."

Even a recent report from workers in the royal college of midwives reported:-

“A great many midwives were themselves born outside the UK, and without them NHS maternity care would, genuinely, be on its knees. Men and women have come to the UK from around the world to work in our health service, to provide care to the people of this country. Doesn’t their work illustrate the positive contribution that immigrants make? They are an asset to this country, and not a burden. "

But believe what you want, I'm sure idiots believe indian and pakistan immigrant doctors are taking the place of english born doctors.

Not very good examples though! Both have a combined area of 100 times that of GB

USA and Australia combined total area of somewhere approaching 8 million sq miles

Great Britain total area just over 80 thousand square miles

The point you appeared to be making was that economic success was possible without immigration.

People go on if like 50% of the population is made up of immigrants its not its 5% which is a lot less than other european countries and we have around 30% of immigrants working in the NHS, so no!

I'm not saying we need more immigration but they play a huge role in the economy to think otherwise is simply stupid.

People should be allowed to live wherever they want to. Just because some rulers drew lines across parts of land and said this is 'ours' means nothing to me. It started as a free world. But now, because you are born in a certain area some people say that you should stay there. Ridiculous and pretty racist.

If I want to go and live in Greece I should be able to and vice versa. I was born on this planet and have equal rights to go where I want the same as anyone else should have

I find the majority of people that say they support the BNP actually have no clue about them, they just see it as a fad. I am not speaking for everyone, I am going by some of the "chavs" on my facebook page that are constantly updating their status.

Not saying I do... Just commenting on the fact that directly comparing us with South Korea seems a bit naive given that each country has its own skills sets, comparitve advantages, cultural differences, etc which will all contribute to the level of immigration required to sustain their respective economies.

I actually agree that it shouldn't be a free for all but at the minute I don't think it is. From what I've read there seems to be quite stringent tests (similar to Australia) nowadays... whether it's too late or not is a different question.

That's excellent Honcho, yes this type of thing does happen within the Pakistani community, infact it happens in many cultures including Indians.............................but is the biggest problem with immigration. I know people who bring there mothers sister etc from abroad, and get them settled here. As long as Britain is more wealthier, more beneficial, and has systems of benefits that can be explioted, there will be those that will do virtually anything to get here!!!

To stop the influx, you need a more controlled and water tight benefit and welfare system, I go to my parents native land every year, and all you hear is how good the UK is because you get free money, free healthcare and so on, and you can work illegaly and earn extra cash!!!

I know many doctors, lawyers etc, from the indian subcontinent that go back to there roots to get married, it's not that unusual, although generation by generation the numbers are less!!

Maybe I was stretching the point a bit but that's what got us into this mess in the first place.

The unskilled labour we recruited in the 60s and 70s adopted this policy and some parts of Leicester (Spinney Hills and North Evington) areas I know well, are and have been for some time been showing signs of a serious meltdown.

Many 3rd and 4th generation immigrants still and probably never will feel that they are part of the wider community.

I grew up in those areas it was pretty much an even split Asian/Black/White but these days you could walk around the area and not see a white face.

In the 70s there was a lot of talk about tension in the area but in the many enjoyable years I spent living in the Highfields we all got on great together and now there is no integration the area has been turned into a ghetto and the young people have become even more marginalised.

Migration is a fact of history; border controls are relatively recent, and prior to that, people could move and settle where they liked.

It is a myth, and if anything, the UK has tightened it further, allowing only the highly skilled and asylum seekers the right to claim residence and/or citizenship in the UK.

If I want to go and live in Greece I should be able to and vice versa.
