Can we be the city of culture?

with respect no one tells me how to feel. I love my home town for all its faults and yes it may not be the best, most lavish City in the world (or even in the East Midlands!) but you know what, I dont give a shit. I love living here and always like to come back when Ive had to visit other places in the UK. I love the way people in this diverse City get on without the major issues they have in other places in England. Im not being fooled by any "Spin" I feel this way because of my own 42 years of experience living in the place!!

no way! :innocent:

What do you want Leicester to be like?

Explain to me your perfect image of Leicester.

I want a society whereby the people in it don't feel they have be segregated from other people. Central news did a piece a few weeks ago and showed a map of Leicester, there was a Hindu population in belgrave, a Muslim population to its right, mostly probably highfields/st mathews, and everywhere else was prodomanently white/English.

We don't have lawfull seperation, but we do have social seperation. Apart from the few that want to mix, all the others that do, don't do it off their own backs, its usually cos they work with eachother etc.

Why is it the Hindu/Muslim/white people don't wana live side by side?

That sounds so stupid, I think there maybe a element of 'preferentialism', whereby people prefer living near people there own culture etc, but I don't think there's an issue of aviodance..................I live in westcotes and braunstone, predominnatly white but it has a mixture of SIkhs and Hindus and Blacks aswell, no-one I know wants to move anywhere closer to a particular group!!!

What percentage of your area is white?

Theres also a class/economic form of integration from what ive seen, of the non whites in your area, would you say they have more wealth than the typical non white household in belgrave/highfields?

About 75% I say!!

Most of the non whites and whites get along really, braunstone used to be quite racist and there still is a element of it, generally we understand each other really. Were probably more wealthier then those who live in highfields, but property is more expensive in belgrave, so i would say belgrave is slightly more abundant!!!!!!!!!

I would agree that large population of any minority in any area would bring about slower integration, as there cultural roots would be a stronger influence, but the concept of aviodance is rather silly, other then those areas where whites or ethnics have a racial hatred, and I don't really see that in Leicester!!

In 2001, about 64% of Leicester's population was white, considering your area doesn't contain the muslims/hindu population accross the A6, i'd say 75% is way too small a number. That said, Leicester is fast becoming the first ethnicly plural city in britain, probably the world.

You highlight an estate agents dream, wealthier and cheaper, orgasmic.

Is that avoidence a free choice? It is rare for racial hatred to occur in Leicester compared to other places, but it does happen. I think the social segregation helps that.

Do we have to have another thread turn into a race debate? Arent there enough of those already?

Thought this was about Leicesters chances in a comp about Culture?

Maybe your right, maybe there are more whites, I dunno and don't really care, for me it's not an issue! Aviodance is free, but to aviod someone, is a form of disliking someone and shows prejudice!!

Racial hatred in leicester these days are confined to the home, and it's alot more individual then groups, plus there is alot more protection against racism, since the stephen lawrence enquiry. Hence, many moons ago, I used to witness racism from adults and it was very acceptable even by the police, these days it's young kids\teens who have obviously picked it up from there peers!!! I agree, segregation, is abig factor for ignorances!!

I had suspicions something was going on between you two, I came home and someone had drawn fake glasses and a beard on a picture of the Gandhi statue in the mercury.

He's selling Leicester for what sets it apart from other cities you brain-dead, nit-picking disabled. You've not stumbled upon any kind of truth here unless you expect them to also boast about the fact that Leicester contains roads, buildings and air.

You're a real foul mouthed lump of garbage aren't you. A typical brain dead waster.

This is all getting very cultural, I think Leicester has a chance after all. ;)

Even your insults are stuck in the 60's.

It's a fair point but in the context of the argument it's not really relevant is it? We're talking about Leicester in relation to other UK cities, not some shanty town in Sudan.

And on that measure we're a long way away from being the best or even great.

Disclaimer: I don't hate Leicester, it's my home, I spent 18 years there and I love going back regularly. But I can still view it with objectivity which some people in this thread seem unable to do.

I don't think your points relevant as I have never lived in sudan I've lived in cities in America, Germany, France, and some spent time in Spain as well as other cities in the UK, believe me Leicester holds it own, it always looks clean to me when I come back home, actually I'm often taken aback on how green and clean it is. If you live there everyday you may think its untidy but its a big city there is bound to be problems but leicester has fewer than others and with its diverse population and increases in investments in the arts and various other developments I dont see why it shouldnt be voted the city of culture.

I don't think being clean and tidy forms part of the criteria for city of culture to be honest. The rest of your points about "investments in the arts" and "various other developments" sounds a bit vague and goes against what many others have said in the thread who actually live in the city.

Is what I said!!

I was merely responding to someones insinuation that I allow other peoples "spin" to colour my judgement of the City Ive lived in for my whole life lol

cool your boots, lou...

i didn't insinuate anything of the kind, in fact i didn't even suggest you do one thing or another - read it again and you will see it is nothing more than a warning.

in fact, i went out of my way to reply to your post in a very different tone to that which i replied to Ultra's... i know you are an open and strong minded sort, i was just trying to offer an explanation to demonstrate that i don't hate the city that i grew up in - even though it has been insinuated on here that i do - have another look and i think you will see that that is the case.

ok -

Does that make you prejudice or someone who likes everyone?

Why is it ignorance to want segregation?

I'm all in favour of segregating bigoted ****** from the rest of the populace. Hope that doesn't make me ignorant.
