He was never going to go.

Not so sure of that myself, I find it a little odd that Mr.Chelsea couldn't deny all the speculation immediately. Maybe he just gave up after he realised that Chelsea weren't going to accept any kind of offer, and didn't actually want to go all the way and hand in a transfer request.

I disagree. I don't think Van Persie is at all over-rated, he's just suffered from broken seasons with injury lay-offs. Last season was the first time he'd had a full season and looked good. Bendtner maybe a bit of a donkey, but he does score goals. As I said, he got one less league goal than Adebayor last season.

I guess we'll see how the season goes on.

I still think Man U are a bit suspect in midfield, whilst losing Tevez and Ronaldo is the equivalent of something like a third of their premier league goals last season. Rooney is key, but he can't do it on his own and him and Berbatov seem to fight for the same space on the pitch.

Agree about Van Persie. He is a very talented footballer with incredable technique.

Think Chelsea or Man United are the serious contenders this year although it would be lovely if Liverpool won the league.

He seems like a kid in the candy store, Man City got 4 world class strikers now, and there is bound to be sour faces among them unless he can field a 4-2-4 formation?

Robinho

Santa Cruz

Tevez

Adebayor

Then he got another 6 that are highly rated

Troublemaker Bellamy

Valerij Bojinov

Benjani Mwaruwari

Jo (loaned to Everton)

Felipe Caicedo

Ched Evans

Is he turning into Keegan? All offense, no defense? :) I would understand if he wanted a couple of world stars in every position, but look at Real Madrid, not really a success history the Galacticos in the last few years...

Robinho - Just in behind the front 2 or the wing.

Santa Cruz - will probably end up being the bench boy, good player mind.

Tevez - quality signing.

Adebayor - awful signing. 170,000 a week, never. Far too lazy, another striker wasn't even needed.

Bellamy - I reckon he might leave.

Benjani - surely leaving? probably some French club.

Jo - pretty much gone (loan for now though)

Caicedo - gone on loan

Evans - gone.

Hughes is not a big enough manager for City. When Robinho signed, he must have thought "who the fook is this?"

I expect them to sign 2 defenders and a midfielder. Atleast 2 defenders anyway.

Kolo Toure is rumoured to be their latest target.

I think if they offer him well above what he's on at Arsenal, he may be tempted...

It is a mystery to me how Hughes is still there. Given the fees and contracts that City have lavished on players I am amazed that they have decided not to invest in a first class coach. Why did they abandon their pursuit of Mourinho?

We were continually told for the first half of last season that Hughes would not be on the payroll for the upcoming season. Even though City's form began to slide in the new year and Robinho's form dipped below the radar all talk of a new coach suddenly dried up. Why? Compensation could hardly be the issue - or was/is it?

There's little doubt in my mind that Hughes' presence was a turn off for some of City's targets. And there's no doubt either that his stewardship is the main reason why few are backing City to break into the top four. Events may prove us sceptics wrong but right now Hughes appears to be the weakest link.

And ADUG know it...

If Hughes had not attracted players better than we might have expected to a non CL club, then I would agree with you. But he has. So where exactly is the empirical evidence that any players said no becuase of Hughes? It is just possible that when the chairman or the players speak to him they are impressed. All these so called world class managers come with baggage. Maybe they want someone who will do things the way they want?

??????

Owen is a functional out and out goalhanger/striker so tipping him to 'bag more than Tevez' is virtually damning him with faint praise. Tevez (like Rooney) is a prodigious workhorse who consistently makes a very high contribution to the total team effort (which is why fans like him). Owen, on the other hand, by dint of his role, is often isolated from play for long stretches of a game. When his side(s) come under pressure it often seems they are a man light.

Having said that I think that Ferguson's move was an imaginative and bold one (has a touch of the Cantona's about it) and it has cost him nothing.

For Owen to justify his role at United he would have to score close to a goal a game. The rest of the attacking players they have had in recent years have contributed huge amounts both in build up play and in defense, he does neither.

Man City's squad looks very odd to me. There is no way that Santa Cruz and Adebayour can play in the same side; there is also something wrong when they are in the same team as Richard Dunne. I'm not convinced De Jong and Kompany have the passing to be a deep lying midfield pair.

What? So if Owen plays 60 games and scores 30 goals you think he will be deemed a failure? 25? 20? What a load of rubbish. If he gets more than 15 goals and United win something he will have been a huge success.

If he plays 32 games and scores 16 goals (Which his career record suggests would be about as well as he is capable), Man Utd could have done a hell of a lot better. There are many players that they could afford to sign who would score the same amount of goals and not be parasitic off of other players. If I am granting someone the freedom to contribute practically nothing to my general play I am going to want a far better return than someone who does great defensive work and/or adds creativity and flair to build up play. There is a reason that players like Owen, pure goal scorers, are dying out; it doesn't make any sense to have them in the side.

I don't understand why people say that it is a free gamble, there is the opportunity cost of Owen taking the place in the side that someone else could have. :dunno:

Why Arsenal are selling Toure I don't know.

He put in a transfer request in January. It is very difficult for them with their wage structure. Wenger is still in the process of transforming them into a club that doesn't have to rely on his brilliance to compete with the best, once the stadium is paid for they will be there.

I remember reading Gallas and Toure don't get on. Out of the two, Gallas is the better player (albeit a rubbish captain).

Anyway, if Arsenal can get £15m for Toure and sign Hangeland for £10m, then I don't think it would be bad business at all.

I hope Wenger has something ready because selling two crucial players doesn't seem too wise unless he has decent replacements ready.

So the next trophy will be due in around 2026, then?

Sounds OK to me.. :D

I think £40 million for Adebayor & Toure is great business for Arsenal considering neither really wanted to be there.

This new chap from Ajax might be decent to replace Toure & it is well known they are interested in Hangeland.

They do need a new striker though.

Decent enough signing, but I'm not even sure he's a massive improvement on Richard Dunne, certainly Michah Richards has the potential to be better than him given time.

Think Wenger has come out of the dealings ok, but it'll all turn out to be a kick in the bollocks if they don't pull their finger out in the market sooner or later, because if they do drop out of the top four, it will be a mission to get back there.

I'll agree that RVP shows flashes of talent but he's barely a 20 league goals a season man.

Sorry no. Last season he made 38 appearances + 6 substitute appearances and scored 20 goals. He's made a total of 122 full appearances for Arsenal, and scored 63, which is more then one every two games. RVP is a class act and he has the talent and ability to improve and improve and this season you'll be eating your words.. if he doesnt get injured ^_^

Mourinho has tipped Man City to win the premiership this season.

Special One tips Man City to win Premier League

[sunday, July 26, 2009 ]

José Mourinho believes that Manchester City’s new signings will see them win the Premier League for the first time since 1968.

The free-spending Eastlands club have bagged a series of top names that looks set to catapult them into genuine contenders for the Premier League next season.

Mourinho told the News of the World: "Emmanuel Adebayor up front with Carlos Tévez - unbelievable!

"And they have Roque Santa Cruz and Robinho too. What a strike force! That's it, City are champions for sure."

The Special One added: "It's not buying the title.

"You buy the players you think can do the job but you still need to prove you are the best - the best coach, the best team and that's tough and no amount of money can buy that."
