haraven Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 He seems like a kid in the candy store, Man City got 4 world class strikers now, and there is bound to be sour faces among them unless he can field a 4-2-4 formation? Robinho Santa Cruz Tevez Adebayor Then he got another 6 that are highly rated Troublemaker Bellamy Valerij Bojinov Benjani Mwaruwari Jo (loaned to Everton) Felipe Caicedo Ched Evans Is he turning into Keegan? All offense, no defense? I would understand if he wanted a couple of world stars in every position, but look at Real Madrid, not really a success history the Galacticos in the last few years...

So I totally agree with you.
flanimal Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 Hughes is useless. His best signing to date is Shay Given. Their problem last season was obviously that they had a weak defence that on occasion bypassed midfield. So why not buy some defenders? Dunne is so slow and makes so many errors. I wouldn't be surprised if Hughes carries on buying strikers. Maybe he is a genius and is developing a new 1-1-8 formation - but I doubt it.
Asha Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 Man City will still only finish 7th or 8th this year. If they really want to break into the top 4, they need have more ambition with their signings, and also think about the team as a whole - not just firepower. Ireland and Barry as the main midfield men? Can't see that being a partnership that wins the title, to be honest.

Robinho can, and probably will play out wide. Besides, any quality team with ambitions needs more than one or two good strikers. Santa Cruz is an able replacement for Tevez or Adebayor, but those two are miles ahead of the other obtions. Bellamy and Bojinov are mid-table team strikers at best and the rest are most likely on their way out. I mean, naming Evans and Caicedo in the same sentence as Robinho, Tevez or Adebayor? Come on...

Barry, Adebayor, Tevez and Santa Cruz WILL win them matches. Obviously they need better players in defense, but I'm sure they know it better than anyone themselves, and I expect them to sort it out soon.
AyewJoking Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 For those of you who read my posts with great interest (you know who you are), I think Hughes is out of his depth at Man City. Its not his fault, he is a good young manager best suited at a club that doesnt have endless amounts of money and massive expectations. He can sign who he (or the owners) want but I dont believe he is good enough to manage them.
lou Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 I personally dont think theyll get anywhere untill they change the manager
GLC Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 Man City really annoy's me, How are they gonna play Robinho, Tevez, Adebayor and Santa Cruz?
Corky Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 Their home form last season was pretty good, 13 wins from 19. Away though they were appalling, if they can sort that out then they could have a good season. Can't see top 4, but possibly top 6.

We know teams need time to gel etc etc but cant see the money men seeing it that way.
Webbo Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 Hughes is no fool, he's proved himself a good manager at Blackburn. You have to wonder whether these transfers are ego buys by the Sheiks that own Man City, there's not quite the same cachet in buying defenders. I really hope Man City do well this season as I've always had a soft spot for them. Any one who hates ManUre as much as they do can't be all bad.
sdb Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 Robinho will play out wide, Tevez and Adebayor up top. Cruz on the bench, occasionally starting ahead of Adebayor imo. Bojinov, Benjani, Evans and Bellamy will probably all leave. Sign Terry or Lescott and they'll finish top 4 for sure. Nice to have a 'big 5' rather than 4 but i now despise another club. Gonna be an open title race though which excites me!

Samilktray Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 Adebayor and Tevez up front, 1 of the best frontlines in the Prem I think. Robinho just behind them aswell, 1 or 2 defensive signings and the top 4 isnt too much of an ask, theyve got a better all round squad than people give them credit for.
flanimal Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 In all fairness, I like Man City - always liked them. Probably because living in Man Utd's shadow and dealing with so many glory hunters can't be a nice experience, and for a big club, they've had some shitty seasons. I'd rather they won the Premier League than any other team in it. As for their squad, midfield is pretty strong - Ireland was quality last year. In defence, Bridge is OK - so I guess they need 2 centre backs and a right-back and they'll be a genuine threat - but I doubt Hughes' ability to balance everything together.
AjcW Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 Why do we have another man city thread?? Not want to merge with the tevez one, that was made into man city thread???
Edmund Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 Ireland and Barry as the main midfield men? Can't see that being a partnership that wins the title, to be honest. I think that is a pretty solid midfield to be fair
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 Adebayor has said it's all about the money in his career. The man is on £150K a week, I doubt he could care if he plays or not.
flanimal Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 I'm sure for £25m transfer fee, and £150,000 a week there are better players out there that Hughes could've signed. Adebayor is over-rated.
breadandcheese Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 I would have thought Hughes would play a 4-3-3 to accommodate the Robinho, Adebayor and Tevez, with Santa Cruz on the bench.
Mr Happy Posted 19 July 2009 Posted 19 July 2009 I would have thought Hughes would play a 4-3-3 to accommodate the Robinho, Adebayor and Tevez, with Santa Cruz on the bench. This is humourous as when Man City first signed Santa Cruz he stated that his ideal strike partner would be Tevez, now it looks like he'll end up bench warming whilst Tevez starts up front with Adebayor.
