Jobless graduate sues her college

A New York woman who says she cannot find a job is suing the college where she obtained a bachelor's degree, the New York Post reports.

Trina Thompson, 27, filed a lawsuit last week against Monroe College in Bronx Supreme Court.

She is seeking to recover $70,000 (£42,000) she spent on tuition to get her information technology degree.

Monroe College spokesman Gary Axelbank said Ms Thompson's lawsuit was "completely without merit".

This case does not deserve further consideration

The ex-student, who received her degree in April, says the college's Office of Career Advancement did not provide her with the leads and career advice it had promised.

"They have not tried hard enough to help me," she wrote about the college in her lawsuit.

Her mother, Carol, said her daughter was "very angry at her situation" having "put all her faith" in her college.

With her student loans coming due, the family would be saddled with more debt, the graduate's mother added.

Monroe insists it helps its graduates find jobs.

"The college prides itself on the excellent career-development support that we provide to each of our students, and this case does not deserve further consideration," its spokesman said.

What about getting off your own arse and finding your own job?

Stupid woman.

Unbelievable. It's not gonna be handed to you, yes they may well provide you with 'leads' into tuhe job market but you should be doing your own prep and research and looking for jobs long before you finish your education.

Classic case of blame culture in my opinion

Is it not more ridiculous that the legal system allows this sort of case to actually make it in to a court room? The woman is surely just using the system to her advantage. Yeah, she's clearly a bit of a twat but that's not where the real blame lies, is it?

Agreed, it shouldn't even get this far!! But I wonder what Mr A. Johnson has to say about this!!

Yes? She's not using the system to her advantage at all if she loses and has to pay their costs. The judge could dismiss it as frivolous on day one, surely?

In the civil system, it's pretty easy to get cases into court, especially if acting as a litigant in person (i.e. they represent themselves, with no legal advice). That's here as well as the US. The sad thing is that once the case goes to court, and the other side has legal representation, the litigant in person generally loses and then pays costs (so it's in the other party's interests to have the case reach the courts). The even sadder thing is that the litigant also wants their day in court, and blindly and willingly goes along with it.

I pray I don't end up in civil law.....

I don't know, could he? Do they not have to go through a certain process?

Surely the clever thing to do is get a degree in American Law and then once you know the ins and outs just make a living out of suing using the loopholes you learnt at college/uni. :D

kind of...

but its also a classic indication of the current financial situation...

over here the unemployment level is somthing like 7.5%

just before i left the states on the 28th of July it was running at 10.3%

but you are right... she is trying to blame everone but herself.. except it might not be her fault either... just a really bad time to be a graduate, i'm thinking....

Nearly all sectors have experienced some sort of decline in hiring.

Many employers are filling positions faster than ever, making the job market more competitive.

For graduating seniors seeking employment, the general consensus is that jobs are still out there — they’re just smaller in number and being snatched up faster than ever before.

Maybe so many people shouldn't be so dim as to rush off to Uni in order to complete a dumbed-down degree that no employer wants?

People are not receiving the right advice.

Absolutely, but you'd have to have your head buried pretty far in the sand to not realise the state that the world economy is in. I didn't mean to suggest it was her fault, but she really can't blame the college/lecturers/whatever for the poor economy and jobs market.
