Thracian Posted 20 August 2009 Posted 20 August 2009 apparenty it's not a simple thing to prove if she's a geezer or not There are pictures of hermaphrodites to be found and, in general, most would find it damned difficult to hide their unusual characteristics from fellow competitors. However there are examples of diminutive genitalia to be found but, even so, you'd think a simple strip-examination might go a long way towards helping the medics decide. Whatever, I'd say the South African authorities have a lot of questions to answer for apparently allowing the situation to develop without clarifying the position with their athlete. However, neither they nor the athlete might be quite so green as first imagined because, surely, the story will run and run and there will be financial spin offs in abundance. Whatever the doctors decide.
Milky Posted 20 August 2009 Posted 20 August 2009 Only 1 min 55 though. A man would walk faster than that.
AjcW Posted 11 September 2009 Posted 11 September 2009 Shes "A-man-ye" Sky news Poor kid, what a rubbish defect that is, I wouldnt want to live with it.
Guest Bilo Posted 11 September 2009 Posted 11 September 2009 Shes "A-man-ye"Sky news Poor kid, what a rubbish defect that is, I wouldnt want to live with it. Yeah, a real kick in the bollocks. Still think they're just pulling her pisser though. I'll get me coat.
Tommy G Posted 11 September 2009 Posted 11 September 2009 I think she needs to man-up a bit and take the news on the chin. I think the IAAF dropped a bollock by not seeing this sooner anyway.
dogadug Posted 11 September 2009 Posted 11 September 2009 Why did the South African team select he/she? Surely they knew of her/his condition
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 11 September 2009 Posted 11 September 2009 I knew it. Should never race again.
Wycombe Fox Posted 11 September 2009 Author Posted 11 September 2009 It's all a bit of a minefield. Does this mean that if she wishes to continue competing as a woman, she would have to take drugs to suppress her testosterone production and HRT to increase her production of oestrogen? Males produce approx 90% of their testosterone in their testicles. Females produce the majority of their 'core' hormone in the ovaries. If she has testicles but no ovaries then surely, chemically, she's more male than female. It's a shame for her and I'm sure this will rumble on for a while yet and probably be decided in the courts.

Not an easy situation for sure, I can see this becoming as much of a legal wrangle as that of her compatriot Oscar Pistorius, who has ended up without a real category as he is considered too strong for other disabled athletes but unable to compete with able-boded athletes. For Semenya, it could be even more complicated as the debate will rage on as to what makes a woman such, seeing as she is externally female but chemically, as you rightly say, largely male. The idea of drugs being used to overcome this hurdle could be a tricky one too, especially given the minefield that is banned substances. It would be no surprise if this has spelled an end to her career, but extremely harsh on her for being barred from competition for something not of her chossing.
James. Posted 11 September 2009 Posted 11 September 2009 Just create a new category for hermaphrodites. I bet there's some more out there who fancy doing a bit of athletics.

Vacamion Posted 11 September 2009 Posted 11 September 2009 If you had "meat and two veg" and "a little bag of slugs", surely you would tuck one inside the other and GFY.
Jordan Posted 12 September 2009 Posted 12 September 2009 It would be no surprise if this has spelled an end to her career, but extremely harsh on her for being barred from competition for something not of her chossing. It was easy to crack jokes earlier, but now I feel awful for Caster. She's a runner--wtf is she supposed to do now? she can't compete against men, she can't compete against women ... Her career's over and her life might be ruined. The Williams siblings would ace the tennis. The Williams sisters are not mannish. The Williams sisters are too much woman to handle.
lou Posted 12 September 2009 Posted 12 September 2009 Christ I feel sorry for this girl, everyone elses medical conditions are confidential, hers has been splashed all over the worlds media and shes the subject of cruel jokes.... its not a visible condition in her case and she and her family probably knew nothing about it. Poor thing, she can never have kids, have a running career or probably will never have a relationship with anyone. I think its terribly sad.
