AoWW Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 I'm trying to find a piece of classical music that could be used as the inspiration for an abstract painting. However, my knowledge of classical music and composers is, erm, very limited. What I want is a piece that's (ideally not too obscure) loud, chaotic, random, perhaps a bit 'dark' or foreboding but where it's possible to pick out the 'feel' of various distinct instruments. Not sure if that makes sense, but hopefully someone will have an idea what I'm getting at. Most classical pieces I can think off are too serene for what I need. Any suggestions, please share. Also while I'm at it, any suggestions for a mellow, chilled out piece of music that feels calm, floaty and summery (non-classical, I'm thinking Ibiza chillout kinda thing)? And something properly 'happy' (with a pop-vibe) that feels bouncy and maybe a bit 'quirky'? Cheers

Budweiser Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 I just like this tbh. Not classical really but oh well.

Libertine Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Christopher Rouse - "Elegia" Anything Tchaikovsky too. EDIT: Yo Yo Ma is awesome too, particularly when playing Bach. Might be good if you want some cello action.
AoWW Posted 27 August 2009 Author Posted 27 August 2009 Cheers for the suggestions - will take me a while to listen to 'em and mull them over. But some great shouts in there. Keep them coming... I figured there'd be a few folks on here who'd help out.

AoWW Posted 27 August 2009 Author Posted 27 August 2009 With all due respect to everyone else I swear I've nailed it with my three. You have, indeed, set the bar very high. Holst - ah, yes, had considered Holst but didn't know my planets well enough to narrow it down! NoW - you know my musical tastes far too well D&W - hmm, was unconvinced at first, but it's growing on me. Some good shouts from others too though, there's potential to outdo James yet, me thinks.
Mark Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Maybe not what you're looking for but its amazing so I'm posting it.

Lillehamring Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 off the top of me 'ead - sorry, didn't read the non classical bit.
Lillehamring Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 this might stimulate the creative juices....
James. Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 For the chilled out one maybe this? To be honest I just wanted to shoe horn this in anyway because it's a fantastic piece of music. Has a nice epic feel to it as well.
Libertine Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Chilled out: All the Buck stuff you've been listening to recently.

MC Prussian Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 I'm not a classical music guy, but these three get me every single time I listen to them. Soothing, moving, rewarding.
