FilboFox Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples". There were a record 205 nominations for this year's peace prize. Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Chinese dissident Hu Jia had been among the favourites. I'm not going to say anything else as this is just a joke. Obama has achieved **** all since taking office, and a PEACE Prize!?! What exactly has he done to merit that!?! It only strengthens the idea that the Nobel Prizes are a joke and are utterly worthless. Pathetic.

Zingari Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 quote In awarding President Obama the Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian committee is honouring his intentions more than his achievements. isn't the road to hell paved with good intentions ? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8298787.stm
FilboFox Posted 9 October 2009 Author Posted 9 October 2009 So what was all this : Well yes, I went overboard, it's just that I think that someone who gets a Nobel Peace Prize should actually have achieved something rather than just take office in the US and state what they would like to see happen... I'd like world peace and for everyone to get on with no more fighting... do I get a peace prize for it?

I can't see what they think he'll be able to do that merits the Nobel Peace Prize.
hairy Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 I did wonder how anyone can achieve the peace prize being commandor and chief of an army at war in the world. Maybe its because Bush was so bad at international relations.
Lillehamring Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 absolute nonsense... perhaps going into the realms of hypercynicism here, but the nobel peace centre, here in olso, currently has a major exhibiton - "From King to Obama".... coincidence? http://www.nobelpeacecenter.org/?did=9081523
Jon the Hat Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 I did wonder how anyone can achieve the peace prize being commandor and chief of an army at war in the world. Maybe its because Bush was so bad at international relations. Does winning a presidency from the republicans justify the nobel peace prize? It might well be the most one man can possibly do to reduce conflict in the world.
Zingari Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 Does winning a presidency from the republicans justify the nobel peace prize? It might well be the most one man can possibly do to reduce conflict in the world. does that mean Cameron will get the Nobel prize for economics ?
FilboFox Posted 9 October 2009 Author Posted 9 October 2009 does that mean Cameron will get the Nobel prize for economics ? Cameron is hardly going to do anything to help our economy. By his party's admission, they are going to cut to solve our deficit and it's already been proven that spending is the best way to get out of the recession so he'd only be making it worse, hence why all of the Western countries are doing just that... only the Tories decided cuts would help get us out...
BoneDog Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 If Ob gets a Nobel Peace Prize I'm moving to Mars
LCFC-ARAB Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 That is seriously unreal... This world is crazy.
MPH Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 If i remember correctly, he only became president 2 weeks before the deadline for nominations had ended.. whatever political persuasion you have towards him... what could he really achieve in 2 weeks? what about the other nominees? the chinese dissidents fighting tyranny there? the human rights activist in Afghanistan? Human rights activists from Russia? Jordan? Columbia? its just a joke and they have made a mockery of themselves in giving it to him.

You say they're cutting to fix the deficit, but then complain that that's not how you get out of recession. Two different subjects. Besides, cutting the budget deficit would be helping the economy, so if he manages that, he'll have done something. The deficit is a huge problem, just as the recession is. The next government, whoever it shall be, needs to have a credible plan to get the budget back under control. That'll mean cuts - even the current administration have belatedly been talking of cuts! As for Obama, that's mildly amusing.

I'm fully aware that we need to cut some areas to get the deficit sorted, but the Tories were talking of implementing cuts to try and get us out of the recession too which wouldn't work.
Ifølge tall fra Iraq Body Count døde 2458 mennesker i Irak fra Obama overtok presidentembetet. from http://www.vg.no/nyheter/utenriks/artikkel.php?artid=573293 - "Meaningless Peace price awarded" or since obama became president, on the 20th january at least 1373 civilians have been killed in afghanistan, according to the UN 377 soldiers from the US led coallition, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Irak have lost their lives. and according to iraqbodycount.org 2458 people have been killed in irak since obama took over..... with peace like that, who needs war!
Thracian Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 People are falling over themselves to set Obama up as some sort of worldwide political messsiah. Awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize only reflects that. Me I'd rather wait to see what he actually does and achieves first and how he deals with difficulties.
Matt Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 Well done for being the first black president of the USA, have a nobel peace prize.
maddog Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 Very very strange. I don't really know anything major he has done, or that i have heard about. Has he promised the Norweigans something to get this I know he doesn't need it, but don't you get 1 million quid if you get a nobel prize, nice for Mr Obama. The guy who won last year Martti Ahtisaari from Finland: for his important efforts, on several continents, and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts. Over three decades, Obama hasn't been president for a year, so it is very stupid that he does more than 30 years work, Obama doesn't do 1 year and gets it.
coale39 Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 That's not what I meant... I'm fully aware that we need to cut some areas to get the deficit sorted, but the Tories were talking of implementing cuts to try and get us out of the recession too which wouldn't work. My understanding of it was that there will be cuts to public services to finance the recession and the deficit instead of no cuts and borrowing the money.
Benji Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 Morgan Tsvangirai: any man that has the balls to take on Mugabe wins in my book
FilboFox Posted 9 October 2009 Author Posted 9 October 2009 Morgan Tsvangirai: any man that has the balls to take on Mugabe wins in my book Couldn't agree more. Mr. Tsvangirai put his life on the line and lost his wife in his attempts to bring the unstable Zimbabwe back from the brink and yet supposedly, half a year in office, a few proposals and not much else from a President are worthy of the award over his efforts... pathetic. If Obama had any minute amount of decency, he'd reject the award and say it ought to be given so someone more worthy.

To be fair to Obama its not his fault he got the award and I think if he rejected it, it would have caused more controversy than it has done.
Jimothy Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 Anyone else think Emmanuel Adebayor should won this?
