James. Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Amazon Link Anyone own one or have any strong opinions on them? I like the idea. iPod for books. And the whole wireless, no monthly costs thing is pretty cool. But then my girlfriend said she was offended by them as it takes the pleasure away of actually owning the physical book... She's like that though, personally I don't see the problem.

AoWW Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Wouldn't say I'm offended by them but I, too, would like to read/own the actual physical book. I dunno why, but I find there's something quite comforting about holding a book - not sure I'd feel the same way about these. Guess it depends what you get used to though.
Dr The Singh Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 There will be a new form a piracy and that will be book piracy, people will download books instead of buying them!!!!
Shrenchel Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Well that's the writers industry completely fvcked then. Personally not a fan, one of the best things about reading is that it's a break from staring at screens all day.

Yeah offended wasn't quite the right word, she just hates the thought of books being replaced by a piece of technology. I don't think that'd happen, probably even more so than with CD's people will still want to own books.

Books will have to be faaar more resilient than CDs were if the industry is gunna survive the inevitable piracy. 90% of music artists are only really making money through live shows nowadays and I don't think a book reading at the local primary school generates the same kind of cash.

I get cramp if i hold a book, and neckache, i hate the things!!

Zingari Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 mp3 audio books for a lazy cvnt like me cheap as chips if you don't mind public domain stuff
BoneDog Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 If these are audio books then they are rubbish! I bought a Terry Pratchett one and half the story aint even on the audio. Rip off

Being able to get loads of books free and legally suits me fine.
James. Posted 26 October 2009 Author Posted 26 October 2009 Exactly. Plus I like libraries. Being able to get loads of books free and legally suits me fine. That's fine and as someone who spends all day staring at screens I agree to a certain extent. But then the Kindle thing is a nice shiny gadget that I don't need, and it's for exactly those reasons that I think I want one.
Daggers Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Don't see the point. I'm struggling to think of a gadget I want less. I like books. Bookshelves full of books. I like pages and bookmarks and covers and broken spines and dog-eared corners and sun-faded yellowing. I like the smell of books, the feel of books. I'd have sex with books. Those book readers? They're just phones/computers without any of the functionality. I guess if you're the kind of person who doesn't want to carry around a big book they might serve a purpose - but the wife reads her books on the bus on her iPhone.

Looking into it a bit, it seems the main selling point is "the screen doesn't actually look like a screen, it looks like paper", which I guess you don't get on the iPhone. Whether that's worth £150 is a different matter altogether. I much prefer a trip down the library.
Daggers Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 I tried the Stanza app this morning and...errr...I like it. You can get ooodles of books for free. Not sure I could do a whole tome on the phone, but I skimmed through a Dickens short story in bed this morning. Damn you technology.

I'll try it tonight, only after watching daljit mattu on you tube!!
Lillehamring Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 can't believe i missed this thread.... i'm from the same 'sex with books' school of thought as daggers, but i would have one at the drop of a hat... the thing is you can have a mini library on a kindle; so, like an ipod if you go on holiday and aren't sure what you'll feel like reading, or how much you'll read you don't have to piss away half you £30 worth of precious baggage with books... and my precious first additions wouldn't get battered in my bag. if i'm not mistaken, certainly with stanza anyway, you can download books when your out and about, so if you finish a book quicker than expect when your on a train, say, you can get something new to read rather than reading the train magazine also you can get newspapers and blogs by subscription too on them, so really it's a totally differnt experience to books - that said, i've got about a hundred paperbacks and hardbacks queued up anyway... my understanding is that they are a nowhere near as easy to rip as music is, and besides people who read books don't steal.... anyway, ebook readers are tipped to be THE number one gadget this xmas, so we better get used to it...
BoneDog Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 I'm buying one of these for a Crimbo present for my Mrs but I haven't got a clue what to buy. Does anyone know which kind is the best? I've been looking at BeBook readers and they look good but there are so many different makes I don't know what to do. I want to get her a good one so if anyone knows anything about them and can give a bit of advice I would appreciate it. I don't want to ask the shop people cos I got sold some right crap a few years ago in Currys when I asked for their advice on some gadget. They sold me the shit version of what I was after cos they couldn't shift it and they could sense I had no idea. Needless to say I had the last laugh when the said salesman was in The Red Lion and I put 8 garden peas, some tartar sauce and a piece of cod in his jacket hood.

Webbo Posted 26 December 2010 Posted 26 December 2010 Got 1 of these for Xmas and I love it. Anybody else got 1?
The Reverend Posted 27 December 2010 Posted 27 December 2010 Got 1 of these for Xmas and I love it. Anybody else got 1? I got one a few months ago and I think they are brilliant. The screen is superb, when I bought it I thought it had a plastic 'protector' screen on the front with some kind of image on it, peeled it off and it was actually the kindle display screen (it never goes off). Battery is just ridiculously good, lasts weeks. There is a library of free books available, i'm currently reading Crime & Punishment, which was free. Just wish I had more time to use it!
