ACF Posted 13 November 2011 Posted 13 November 2011 If you mean costing £50, then yes it's fee... Well played. But my Kindle was useful when I wanted to find out the City scores in Thailand when the resort had over-priced internet, when i wanted to Facebook on the train to let my mates know I had no phone, etc. But each to their own I guess, just trying to help
Rincewind Posted 13 November 2011 Posted 13 November 2011 If you get Calbre you can download Ebooks on to it and read them. Heres the first paragraph from one of mine. Introduction There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. Another Introduction There is another theory which states that this has already happened. I bet most can gues the book.

Rincewind Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 I borrowed some Ebooks off my brother while I was at his place. He had downloaded 8000 at some point. Put them on my laptop and downloaded Calibre. On my reader I now have all the Hitchiker books, a few Phillip K Dick's and the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov. and a John Grisham one. I also loaded all the remaining ones on my PC that my other brother had sent me. Should keep me going for a while. Had to remove a video I had on. It was taking a lot of space.
Mickey O'Neil Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 I don't have a problem with them. The books I'd want to keep (N.I history/politics) I'd buy the physical book. For most non-fiction /novels, I'd download to the Kindle. I'm gonna be a cheap bastard and wait 14 weeks to get one when I'm in Boston. The Americans have s better selection of Kindles than we have as well. The cheapo version works out to about 55 pounds as well.
Derek Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 I would totally go with the kindle over the nook personally, it has better features and selection. The problem with the nook color is that it has a backlit screen which causes eye-strain for many people. The monochrome kindle screen on the other hand has no backlit and is clear in any lighting condition - I can look at it all day with no strain. 3g coverage does not work in iraq - but the wifi model above will work fine... and it sounds like that would be preferred anyway since with the wifi model you only have internet access if you connect to a local wifi connection (whereas the 3g kindle internet is always on). With the wifi model, you can only use internet in wifi hotspots, so for example he could use the kindle on the web at home if you have a wireless connection setup at your home, or public hotspots like at airports or restaurants. So, for example, he could setup wireless internet at home and access his kindle over the internet there, but not have wireless internet setup at the church and therefore can not access the internet there. In addition to using the on device store to access ebooks in wifi hotspots, you can also manually download ebooks onto your computer and transfer them to your kindle via a usb cable, so you can use a kindle in any country in "offline" mode if that makes sense.
Wycombe Fox Posted 1 December 2011 Posted 1 December 2011 I've just been to Tesco's and read their blurb on the two different Kindle products. It states that the one with wifi only has a battery life of approx one month, whereas the one with keyboard, wifi and 3G has a life of two months. I bought the keyboard version, got home and read the box - it states 'Battery life of up to one month'. Anybody else's box say the same? Are Tesco's selling previous generation ones whilst claiming to be the latest?
shen Posted 1 December 2011 Posted 1 December 2011 Aren't Kindles restricted to books through Amazon or some special format?

Zingari Posted 4 March 2012 Posted 4 March 2012 Nice to know if mine buggers up! Yep it's dead simple, if you go to your account and ask them to ring you . They called me back almost as soon as i pressed the link with my phone number Hope you don't have probs but it's good to know that amazon are really on the ball with this stuff
stripeyfox Posted 5 July 2012 Posted 5 July 2012 Finally took the plunge and brought a Kindle Touch (for my birthday!) and am really pleased with it. Have been reading e-books on the Ipad for a year or so now and am a total convert, but only really for novels and autobiograhphies and stuff - can't see "coffee table" type books being replaced any time soon. Loads of free or low priced booked available and the amazon store makes it easy to find genres etc - I love the post apocolyptical type books (just finished "The Road" The screen is definately a lot easier to read than the Ipad for any length of time.
Guest Posted 5 July 2012 Posted 5 July 2012 I don't like the idea that you can't upload your own books to a kindle. Love my non-kindle ebook.
stripeyfox Posted 5 July 2012 Posted 5 July 2012 I don't like the idea that you can't upload your own books to a kindle. Love my non-kindle ebook. I did seriously consider the Kobo, or something different than the Kindle, but in the end, because I have already brought quite a bit from Amazon on the ipad which will transfer over, I decided to stick with it.
