Zingari Posted 11 November 2011 Posted 11 November 2011 There's one reason I would never get a Kindle - my book collection makes me the pretentious tool I am and long may it continue and grow you can have both , they don't take your books away and burn them or owt it's not like Fahrenheit 451
The Doctor Posted 11 November 2011 Posted 11 November 2011 How is the Biff, Chip and Kipper collection coming along? ey?
nuttytimmy Posted 11 November 2011 Posted 11 November 2011 There's one reason I would never get a Kindle - my book collection makes me the pretentious tool I am and long may it continue and grow How do eBooks smell and feel? How will you get that last-gasp feeling you get when you feel that you're nearing the end of a book? They're horrible things.
Houdini Logic Posted 11 November 2011 Posted 11 November 2011 you can have both , they don't take your books away and burn them or owt it's not like Fahrenheit 451 But when I'm 70 I want to be sitting in my little self made library with a bottle of rum and a log fire - preferably with a collection that didn't stop in 2011.
Rincewind Posted 11 November 2011 Posted 11 November 2011 I bought an Ebook ready some time ago. Not a Kindle. Only found out about them after. One of my brothers helped me set up Calibre and sent me a load of Douglas Adams. Used it to start with not had mine out (Ebook reader) for a while. May take it with me next week when I go away for the train Journey although I may not have much time cos of changes. It was OK to start with then found some books don't automatically go back to where you left off. Its just a basic one but it stores quite a few books long with films I have a XMen film on. The last one. Not sure how many films it can hold. I wish in a way I had got a Kindle but I saw this one and thought it was a reasonble price. A week later I was told that I could get a Kindle for not much more. Can you type in things with a Kindle? I know it has more features. Saw one thing on a show where it was electronic yet you actualy turned pages or looked like it. They are wafer thin. So its like having a book but much lighter and can store a lot more. so you could carry your whole library around with you.

If you want your Ebook to smell you could always store it in your soc I've only ever used mine for looking stuff up on the built in dictionary. You can surf the net on it but it's really clunky to use.

They're horrible things. If you want your Ebook reader to smell you could always store it in your sock drawer or the missus Knickers drawer. There's a Kindle on Ebay 0 Bids £124.99. Can't help showing a picture of The Mail on the illustation.
Ozwin Posted 11 November 2011 Posted 11 November 2011 I'm gonna get me one of these soon. I'm a gadget whore and with them being sub £100 now it seems like a good time to get one.
Rincewind Posted 12 November 2011 Posted 12 November 2011 Found mine. Its a Read Me made by Binatone. Got Life The universe and Everything loaded atm. Its quite easy to use but most Ebooks are designed for the Kindle so some Ebooks may not be suitable. Just have to find all the connectors found the mains plug. need the lead that connects to the PC I have a couple similar could be one or a phone too.

AoWW Posted 12 November 2011 Posted 12 November 2011 Ok, I realise this is a dumb question but can you view pictures on them as well as text, like for a picture / non-fiction book?
GLC Posted 12 November 2011 Posted 12 November 2011 Ok, I realise this is a dumb question but can you view pictures on them as well as text, like for a picture / non-fiction book? Should be able too
AoWW Posted 12 November 2011 Posted 12 November 2011 Also if I had a physical 'made of trees' book I might well lend it to others. I assume you can't 'lend' your Kindle downloaded book to someone else's Kindle?
Phube Posted 12 November 2011 Posted 12 November 2011 Also if I had a physical 'made of trees' book I might well lend it to others. I assume you can't 'lend' your Kindle downloaded book to someone else's Kindle? Yup, you can share between, I believe, 5 Kindles (Kindle accounts)...
AoWW Posted 12 November 2011 Posted 12 November 2011 Yup, you can share between, I believe, 5 Kindles (Kindle accounts)... ooh ok, that does make it a more interesting proposition. Thanks.
Webbo Posted 12 November 2011 Posted 12 November 2011 Ok, I realise this is a dumb question but can you view pictures on them as well as text, like for a picture / non-fiction book? Yes, but you can't colour them in with crayons.
AoWW Posted 12 November 2011 Posted 12 November 2011 Yes, but you can't colour them in with crayons. Bugger.
Stay Positive Posted 12 November 2011 Posted 12 November 2011 I'm a complete Luddite when it comes to gadgets. I neither own - nor want - a Kindle, I haven't got a laptop and my mobile phone dates from 1999 and does nothing except allow me to accept and receive phone calls and text. And I like it that way,.
shass Posted 12 November 2011 Posted 12 November 2011 £150... and it really looks like paper! Thats hellishly expensive paper.. " I'll tell you what I want darling" whispered the stunningly attractive brunette, " I want you to ......... Bollocks, batteries ran out! Not for me thx.
BoneDog Posted 13 November 2011 Posted 13 November 2011 I've heard that the Kobo or Nook is the way forward. We've got a Sony Reader and it's well worth the money if you read alot (£150 two years ago but probably cheaper now). No internet on ours but I'm not sure why you'd need that anyway, you just plug it into the front of your pc to buy books or download free ones from Waterstones or wherever. We normally buy and download a few at a time so it's nae bother. Takes about 5-20 seconds to download and put the book onto your reader. Hardly ever have to charge it up either. I prefer a real book as I enjoy building up a physical library but the Mrs loves a reader as she's got arthritis (no she's not a pensioner, she's only 31 ) and it is much easier for her to hold them for a long time.

You do realise the battery life on a Kindle is approximately 1 MONTH on one charge... Either you read your... *cough* special interest books very slowly.... or there won't be a problem...

Either you read your... *cough* special interest books very slowly.... or there won't be a problem... Thanks for that. My wife would like to know if the Kindle battery could be adapted to run say her........' make-up mirror' Also you are very astute, I am a slow reader. I lost an eye in an industrial accident operating a pig peeler ( they make pork scratchings. ) The remaining one is held in with velcro. As it cannot move, I have to pass the book slowly from left to right in front of it.
Rincewind Posted 13 November 2011 Posted 13 November 2011 My reader has no external batteries. Forget how many hours reading time you get but if I'm at home I use the mains. Got it out when the subject came up and started to read Life the Unerverse and Everything again. Can't find the lead to connect to the PC though. The one I thought it was won't fit the reader.
ACF Posted 13 November 2011 Posted 13 November 2011 Just so you know, if you buy a 3G Kindle, the 3G is free
Phube Posted 13 November 2011 Posted 13 November 2011 Just so you know, if you buy a 3G Kindle, the 3G is free If you mean costing £50, then yes it's fee...
