davieG Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 Plans for a new £67million bus station in the centre of Leicester have been unveiled. Preliminary designs of three possible buildings have been put forward by Leicester City Council today . The new bus station would be built in the area around Mansfield Street, near to the current St Margaret's Bus Station. It is hoped work could begin as soon as 2014 if the project gets approval. Money for the development is yet to be secured, although a bid for funding from the government's regional funding allocation has been put forward. Councillors believe the bus station's environmental credentials make it the most attractive bid in the East Midlands and are confident of securing the cash. Councillor Patrick Kitterick, cabinet member for regeneration and transport, said: "This is an exciting project and if these proposals move forward it would lead to quality facilities and meet our aim for a well-connected centre." I'm speechless!
Bellend Sebastian Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 It doesn't seem that long since they built the last one, but it's probably over 20 years ago now
lou Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 I'm speechless! Quite!! It beggers belief! Are there any lovely old unique structures/buildings around there that they can bulldoze while theyre at it?
Dr The Singh Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 Quite!! It beggers belief! Are there any lovely old unique structures/buildings around there that they can bulldoze while theyre at it? I thought this country was suffering a recession, where the fook is that money comming from, and if they had money, why didn't they save that bridge??
lou Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 I thought this country was suffering a recession, where the fook is that money comming from, and if they had money, why didn't they save that bridge?? Silly you! If theyd saved that bridge, DMU wouldnt have got its lovely new sports hall.... then what would we all do?! Im not saying anything about backhanders by the way!
davieG Posted 18 November 2009 Author Posted 18 November 2009 It doesn't seem that long since they built the last one, but it's probably over 20 years ago now Well it was refurbished a couple of years ago and there's very little wrong with it consider the amount of use it gets. A better bus service would be more useful. Why £67 million it beggars belief!

A better bus service would be more useful. Why £67 million it beggars belief! You are quite right, of course. Why not use it to subsidise the buses? The more I think about it, the more mental it is. You don't even need a bus station, a few bus stops would do

A better bus service would be more useful. Why £67 million it beggars belief! Exactly!! Ive used St Margarets at peak times and its not that busy... theres also the bus station on Charles St... no need for this nonsense.... 67 million could be far better spent then again this council dont give a toss what the public want anyway thats been proven already..... oh well I'll be expressing my disgust with my vote when the opportunity arises.
StanSP Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 I'd laugh if the figure has been misquoted/mistyped and it turns out a simple '.' has been missed out between 6 and 7
Jon the Hat Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 I'm speechless! 1) "as soon as 2014"?? Soon? SOON? 2) £67M? Is it going to double as a spaceport?? 3) For gods sake actually create the demand for the bus before you build somewhere to park them.
lou Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 I'd laugh if the figure has been misquoted/mistyped and it turns out a simple '.' has been missed out between 6 and 7 They couldnt build a bus station for 6-7 million..... not our council!
CosbehFox Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 Well it was refurbished a couple of years ago and there's very little wrong with it consider the amount of use it gets. A better bus service would be more useful. Why £67 million it beggars belief! I suppose it has something to do with sending all the park n ride buses there as there's due to be one built at Birstall. Quite a lot of questions left by this one. Maybe, National Express are looking to expand on site. I could mention my job..... <_<
Lillehamring Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 again - like for like! it is bizarre... the city is crying out for a REAL bus station in town or at least away from st.M's.... ....why not keep st.M's seeing as it is perfectly adequate, and spend the money converting lee circle into a bus station, and at the same time freeing up charles street and giving that bit of land back to the haymarket!

lou Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 The Park & Rides are terminating at the top of high St they've just built a terminus for them. this just gets more and more ridiculous! There is no justification in the world for spending 67 million.
hairy Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 £67m will buy the land, demolition existing buildings (eventhough by looking on google most of Manfield Street appears to be carparking), pay for the designers and finally have it built with the loose change leftover. To have that money spent in the Leicester economy can only be a good thing. It will also regenerate an area that is falling behind the rest of the city. There are also plans to link that area to Abbey park by footway / business area. If there were a new bus station surely it would encourage people to use buses more. My only concern would be our councils ability to vastly exceed budgets.
Sir Fynwy Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 this just gets more and more ridiculous! There is no justification in the world for spending 67 million. The point is that the council don't have the money but if they put forward some ludicrously expensive plan for a white elephant they may get funding from central government, this way the council gets a load of money to waste and they get all the perks of putting out huge contracts for tender, anyone for a free pi$$ up on Colin?

There's a perfectly adequate bus station right next door. There are also plans by a private concern to develop the Corah's site which includes a link to Abbey Park. This will be Tax payers money as well as Council Tax which iI don't mind seeing invested but not on an unnecessary bus station and not for £67mil and not with their reputation for development. There's many things this City desperately needs a bus station isn't one of them, and not there. Bus stations don't provide much encouragement to use buses, a decent reliable, regular, punctual bus service does - people want to spend as little time as possible in a bus station.

Exactly, this is not about providing new infrastructure.
hairy Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 There's a perfectly adequate bus station right next door. How can it be adaqate if there is also one next to the Haymarket and a terminal for the park n' ride at the top of High Street? There are also plans by a private concern to develop the Corah's site which includes a link to Abbey Park. I think its one and the same This will be Tax payers money as well as Council Tax which iI don't mind seeing invested but not on an unnecessary bus station and not for £67mil and not with their reputation for development. The money is from a East Midlands pot if I'm right (?) I would rather see it spent in Leicester, developing a rundown area than elsewhere in the region. There's many things this City desperately needs a bus station isn't one of them, and not there. Public transport is critical to a city's success. The council, for whatever reason, see this as a priority. I would have thought the other side of the city centre near the rail station would have been better but without all the facts its hard to know why they put forward this development. It maybe just because there is a pot of money going begging and they have to be seen trying to get it before the other citys in the region. Bus stations don't provide much encouragement to use buses, a decent reliable, regular, punctual bus service does - people want to spend as little time as possible in a bus station. I would agree with you. But if you have to spend time ina bus station waiting for you late bus I am sure you would like it to be a nice bus station.

The money is from a East Midlands pot if I'm right (?) I would rather see it spent in Leicester, developing a rundown area than elsewhere in the region. There are plenty of run down areas of Leicester and a massive lack of facilities why don't they address them Public transport is critical to a city's success. It maybe just because there is a pot of money going begging and they have to be seen trying to get it before the other citys in the region. Well I'd say it was highly immoral to spend public money let alone £67mill just because you can. I would agree with you. But if you have to spend time ina bus station waiting for you late bus I am sure you would like it to be a nice bus station. And St Margaret's is perfectly adequate when I've used it, besides buses don't run that late
lou Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 for 67 million Im expecting a personal (male) massuer on hand to rub my feet/back while I wait.
hairy Posted 18 November 2009 Posted 18 November 2009 Its just gone up in price! £73m Must be Lou's massuer!
davieG Posted 18 November 2009 Author Posted 18 November 2009 Its just gone up in price! £73m Must be Lou's massuer! So it's to replace the Haymarket and Charles St with St Margarets staying.

This is the sort of comment I hate, all public money comes from taxes levied on us so why is wasting money in Leicester any better than wasting it somewhere else, just stop wasting money and properly think through development. We need more buses or trams or somethink that actually moves people around not a new station.
