Guest Posted 13 February 2010 Posted 13 February 2010 Nice to see University of Leicester providing research into something we all probably knew anyway http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics...-of-choice.html The £59.99 trainers were found to be the thieves' top pick after the researchers looked at tread marks left inside and outside raided homes. The work, published in Police Review, was done by the University of Leicester and found that Reebok Classics were worn by 52 out of 100 different burglars in the Northamptonshire region after studying footprints in 155 burglaries. Unemployed burglars spent on average £67 on a pair of plimsolls, while employed ones spent just £48 PhD student Matthew Tonkin found that for every extra £1 spent on trainers the level of social an economic deprivation of the crook increased by 0.75 per cent. He said that his research could help cops collar repeat offenders simply by the kind of shoes they wear. He said: "Forces will be able to use this information to narrow down their list of prolific offenders." The news comes after it was revealed earlier this week that the number of burglaries in the UK is plummeting as crooks turn their hand to mugging instead. It showed that criminals were turning their backs on burglaries because cheap domestic good couldn't be sold on, according to research at the same university. It found that £20 DVD players were 'simply not worth stealing' and revealed that number of burglaries in the UK had dropped from 1.28m in 1999 to 744,000 in 2009. Muggings in the UK rose from 312,000 in 2000 to 375,000 in 2009. Co-author of the study Dr John Bond, a fellow at the University of Leicester and a scientific support manager at Northamptonshire Police said the research could help steer cops towards a prime suspect. He said told industry magazine Police Review: "The research can tell forces what sort of person you are looking for. "It will give them a steer - or point them in the right direction, based on the sort of person they might be - their lifestyle, where they might live, how they dress, purely based on the cost of their shoes. "This research provides another dimension. Recovering footwear impressions adds value for the scene of crime officer." One police officer, who did not want to be named, said career burglars choose the 'softest and lightest trainers' so they can sneak around houses unnoticed. The Met cop said: "Burglars are not stupid - they pick the softest and lightest trainer when they go on a job so nobody will hear them. "The drug addict burglars don't have a clue and are a totally different kettle of fish to the career burglar, who plans the break-in with military-like precision - right down to the type of shoes they wear."
Samilktray Posted 13 February 2010 Posted 13 February 2010 Some of the old school Reebok high-tops that theyve reissued are very nice. Classics are vile.
ozleicester Posted 14 February 2010 Posted 14 February 2010 How do we know they were "different" burglars? Just the same guy knocking off every house.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 14 February 2010 Posted 14 February 2010 Who buys Reebok, anyway? Nobody - they're stolen!
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 14 February 2010 Posted 14 February 2010 Yeah I always wear Classics when I go thieving.
Samilktray Posted 14 February 2010 Posted 14 February 2010 I honestly thought Lonsdale would be the common thiefs choice of footwear.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 14 February 2010 Posted 14 February 2010 DONNAY. You just don't see them around nowadays.
Head Honcho Posted 14 February 2010 Posted 14 February 2010 How do we know they were "different" burglars? Just the same guy knocking off every house. My thoughts exactly. Please tell me somebody didn't get paid for this useless piece of information
Tilley Posted 14 February 2010 Posted 14 February 2010 I'd go for nackered Converse and tracky bottoms tucked in socks, if I was a thief.
Libertine Posted 14 February 2010 Posted 14 February 2010 I'd go for nackered Converse and tracky bottoms tucked in socks, if I was a thief. Not Reebok Classics and canons at dawn?
lildave3 Posted 14 February 2010 Posted 14 February 2010 What the toss is this shit?! Who the fuck researches this?!
BoneDog Posted 17 February 2010 Posted 17 February 2010 I must of buried at least 16 pairs of Samba in the woods in the 90's. I don't know why cos I only robbed pub cellars and chip shops so I don't suppose CSI would of been on the case! Lads, if you're going on a night-time raid, make sure you borrow or steal some footwear to work in.
