davieG Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 Banks has been criminally ignored by LCFC even though he won his WC medal when with us. But he's now pretty much known outside of LCFC as a Stoke hero and they already have statue of him, I think we've missed the boat with him. Apart from Banks and maybe Rowley we don't have an ex-player that is universally recognised, I'd imagine even those listed many fans outside of LCFC would probably say Who? I'd still prefer a series of sculptured face masks embedded into the wall of the stadium so that we can include many 'heroes' because to me no one stands out above all others even more so when you consider the time span over which fans might nominate some one.

davieG Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 why not Shilton? local lad that went on to become the all time England Caps record holder A good shout but I still think to many outside LCFC he's recognised as a Forest hero, that's where he hit the heights and greatest achievements. When I visualise him despite having seen many, many of his games for LCFC I always picture him as a Forest player holding up the European Cup with Clough
Karljohn Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 just a stab in the dark maybe , but what about D J ?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 Let's just blow next season's budget on a huge 50ft gold plate statue of Mandy. The more I read this thread, the more I think it would be a bad idea.

Maybe we should have something like the walk of fame that the tigers have.
jonthefox Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 Incidently, who would get the ball rolling on this one?. would fan 'pressure' make the club do something, or would outside funding be needed. Aby ideas?.
davieG Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 Incidently, who would get the ball rolling on this one?. would fan 'pressure' make the club do something, or would outside funding be needed. Aby ideas?. Fan pressure and fan money and the fact that there isn't a single obvious statue 'candidate' that would motivate a majority of fans to contribute to it is why it's not already happened.
Ultra Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 Apart from Banks and maybe Rowley we don't have an ex-player that is universally recognised, I'd imagine even those listed many fans outside of LCFC would probably say Who? Gary Lineker? Or even Steve Claridge? Without the money that Lineker and associates put up in 2002 when we were in administration, we may not have had a club to support. As far as I'm concerned though, it's disappointing to see digs at Walshy on this thread. The guy's record should speak for itself. Fourteen years of loyal service to the club, during which he battled through several career-threatening injuries and some rough times on the pitch (especially under David Pleat), would be sufficient to make him a contender for legend status. But the Wembley triumphs (which, lest we forget, were the first EVER in the club's history) and his role in the two successful League Cup runs of 1997 and 2000 explain why Walshy is revered by most City fans.
Ultra Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 Maybe we should have something like the walk of fame that the tigers have. Good call.. The city centre also has a walk of fame, launched only yesterday. No City players feature as yet, but watch this space..
jonthefox Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 well we need to choose someone, or else we'll end up with a statue of lee jobber.
davieG Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 well we need to choose someone, or else we'll end up with a statue of lee jobber. Too expensive think of all the stone you'd need
AyewJoking Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 I dont think a club like Leicester could have just one statue. Forgive me if I'm wrong but Tom Finney is the only note worthy player Preston have ever had and it was bloody ages ago! I'm not saying Leicester have anyone who should be held in the same regard as Sir Tom but we have several iconic figures such as Arthur Rowley, Keith Weller, Martin O'Neill, Gary Lineker, Steve Walsh. We could have Walshy in the middle of that roundabout approaching the ground from Raw Dykes Road to intimidate (sp) away fans and inspire Leicester fans. Gary Lineker outside the main entrance, you get the idea.
jonthefox Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 btw, ive always thought a statue would look good on that little traffic island at the bottom of raw dykes road. Imagine walking towards that on matchdays.
Mav Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 McKinlay and Summerbee. And Iwan Roberts, with teeth missing. Maybe Trevor Benjamin and Stan Collymore holding fire extinguishers? What about DJ holding a knife?
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 A Robbie Savage statue would be nice! On a serious note I think it would have to be Walsh/O'Neill though.
Sampson Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 A good shout but I still think to many outside LCFC he's recognised as a Forest hero, that's where he hit the heights and greatest achievements. When I visualise him despite having seen many, many of his games for LCFC I always picture him as a Forest player holding up the European Cup with Clough Don't forget that there was also a lot of controversy over the way Shilton left the club. Requesting a transfer saying he wanted to "move onto bigger things" only to make a sideways move to Stoke for the money. He was hated for years by Leicester fans after that. I think most of us have forgiven him for it now, but thinking back I'm not sure anyone who treated the club he was supposedly a lifelong fan of in such a disrespectful way should be recognised in bronze.

I'm not sure why Banks has become a bigger hero at stoke than us. He only spent about 4 seasons at Stoke while he spent the majority of his career here. I suppose it's because he almost single-handedly won them their only major honour. I'll always remember Banks as the best Leicester player I ever saw though and it's not to say that both sides can't have a statue of him I believe there are about 3 statues each of Stanley Matthews and Brian Clough outside various grounds and birthplaces.

Sampson Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 I remember it well and was outraged that he went to Stoke. Same. and it took me a long time to get over it too. I'm still not sure I fully respect Shilton as a person even now, though do still respect him as a great player.

True there's no reason why we can't have him, I just think it dilutes his support and makes me believe that we don't have an outright fan's favourite.
jonthefox Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 its looking more like a walk of fame or davie g's bronze face idea. come on someone , lets get this sorted so we can have a ground steeped in history and one we can be rightly proud of.
body102 Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 Tony James for that final day goal against Oxford , which kept us from going into the third tier .Good record until Allen , megson and Holloway fooked it up . Dont blame Ollie as much , think he just inherited a shit side .
Guest Mee-9 Posted 25 April 2010 Posted 25 April 2010 Why not have one of Filbert the fox, to go on Filbert Way How about Keith Weller?
