acooling08 Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Before you all get started, I love Pearson and think he's done a brilliant job since taking over. But today, he got it wrong badly: - Changed a winning team in great form. - Started with 1 up front at home - why?? - Played Waghorn who is 5ft 9 against 6ft 5 defenders and then played the long ball tactic. - Brought a clearly unfit Fryatt on who had no effect apart from miss a simple chance. - Left it far too late to bring Kermo, Dany on. Sort it out for Wednesday Pearson! If we are at our best we can do it.
Ricey Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 - Injuries - With played with 1 up front for months - Agreed - It's hard to judge match fitness until the player is actually playing - Agree about Dany but Kermo has hardly been an impact sub all season
Webbo Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 It was 4-3-3 only Waghorn didn't get the support. That formation has worked well for us at times this season, with Vaughn injured, Howard suspended and Fryatt only half fit I'm not sure what else Pearson could have done.
Salieri Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Agree to it all, where was Vaughan? On loan at Blackpool. Probably. Seriously, where do you think he was? Injured, obviously.

We have played this system before, Dyer and Gallagher should have supported Waggy more!! Pearson said that to Walsh at half-time. It may have been nerves, but I do not for one second believe that Pearson set the team out to play long balls to Waghorn all day. The team have to play with more confidence and support the attack more like we saw in the 2nd half. If they cant do that then Pearson may have to change to 4-4-2 instead of what I think was supposed to be a 4-3-3 today

Tilley Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Kermorgant on for Waghorn and gave N'Guessan five minutes?! 'Played Nige.
leftsideoverhere Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Kermorgant on for Waghorn and gave N'Guessan five minutes?! 'Played Nige. Wind yer neck in, Tilley, we created more chances after Kermo came on, and he got a couple of unlikely knock-downs to Fryatt. So much for everyone keeping a sense of proportion for the season we've had. We've played a flowing 4-5-1 into a 4-3-3 on attack before and seen it work really well. If Vaughan hadn't been injured then maybe a 4-4-2 would have been a better choice, but that wasn't on offer. Sometimes you lose a game and it isn't actually anyone's fault.

We've had a tremendous season, no one is questioning that. We're questioning the performance, the tactics, the team selection and the substitutions. Some people are too firmly wedged up Pearson's arse. Yes he has done a great job getting us where we are but he showed his naivety today and played a defensive line up at home. Today should have been attacking, grab a goal or two then play that line-up on Wednesday night with a lead to defend but instead we have to there and score at least two. Praise him when he's doing well but don't be frightened to criticise him when he has got it wrong and today he got it wrong. Every man and his dog were screaming for N'Guessan to come on because we were crying out for a pacy, direct, strong winger but typical Pearson waited until the 85th minute to bring him on, not good enough. That team today was set up not to concede.

Waghorn should never of been taken off, Dyer should of been hugging the touchline and Fryatt is well off at the moment and we played too many long balls.
WardyisPukka Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 he did get waghorn on his own wrong!! but we trying to play too many long passes and too many fancy balls in the 1st half!! Dyer ran round like a headless chicken!! got use our wingers with more effect!! its gonna be very tough !!

ian_marshall Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 I think the real questions today shouldn't have been asked of the team nor Nigel Pearson but more of our poor support! Can't believe that we can't even sell more tickets for a play off semi final than an end of season pointless match against Middlesbrough. The atmosphere never got going today, and I thought we gave a very poor account of ourselves especially as we should have been making the most of our home advantage. Let's hope for a better showing at Cardiff.
Flynny Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Blame the ref. Free kick was moved 5 yards in and should have had at least one penalty if not three. Shocking performance.

I agree N'Guessan should've been brought on earlier but hindsight is a wonderful thing. We've seen what Dyer is capable of and unfortunately he didn't deliver, you can't really pinpoint the blame solely on the manager. I'm just as frustrated as you but I think all of this looking for an excuse and someone to blame is just reactional which I can also fully understand but fuck it, it's not over yet. :city:
Aeropars Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Haha... all these people saying 'blame the ref' must be retarded. Its a sad state of affairs when we are whinging over 2 dubious decisions. We should have made more luck than what we did.

It's reeks of desperateness when were trying to blame the result on a few accidental hand balls (which could've gone either way) and a freekick being moved a yard or so.
Bettsj2 Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Spot on. It was time to gamble today, but he got it wrong badley. Waghorn should never of been taken off, Dyer should of been hugging the touchline and Fryatt is well off at the moment and we played too many long balls. Time to gamble? In a two legged game, gambling is the last thing you should be doing in such a tight situation. With regards to the formation, Cardiff have got probably the most dangerous midfield in the league this season and I for one don't think it was a mistake to try and crowd them out. After all, this is a 2 legged game and the long game is what NP was looking at. It's all too easy to point fingers and use hindsight (which i'm getting quite used to since joining this forum!!) but the truth is that Wittingham's free kick was a moment of class and aside from that, Cardiff didnt really cause too many problems and towards the end of the game, Fryatt should certainly have scored, 2 clear penalties were turned down and their keeper made an absolutely sublime save in the dying seconds. Too many people expected us to waltz into the final and have conveniently forgotten that Cardiff actually finished above us. They are the hardest opposition we have ever faced in the play-offs and unfortunately we didnt play particularly well. Cardiff certainly didnt deserve to win the game but in truth neither did we. We go into the 2nd leg needing an early goal. And as fans, we need to give them our upmost support and not jump on their backs. The team and management have given us a better season than any of us could have hoped for and we should be grateful to be in the position that we are and not fighting relegation or languishing in mid-table. Please get some perspective.

Any normal free kick taker and I'd feel the same but this bloke's scored pretty much all his goals from free kicks this season, give him a sniff and he'll more than likely score. 'A yard or so' is a lot for someone of his quality. We should have scored the chances we had though, so in that regard we weren't good enough. Since the game ended 0-1 the free kick was a big moment in the game and it cost us.

Every game you watch players move the ball a yard or so and free kicks are very rarely taken from exactly were the foul was. I can naturally understand why City fans are upset as they're thinking with their heart but it's all terribly biased.

Goal or no goal, free kick or no free kick, we SHOULD have offered more threat. We didn't. THis game was not lost on a a 1 yard error! When will people realise this!!!!!
