2006 World Cup. Out on penalties to Portugal. Remember Beckham going off injured and Rooney sent off.

Terrible day

Posted

Euro 2004 against Portugal, Sol Campbell heading a perfectly legitimate last minute winner only for the referee to rule it out.

Oh yeah fook me that was probably the worst decision i've ever seen. That was a killer when we went out after that.

1986 World Cup - Watching maradona destroy our defense and clearly scoring with his hand but somehow the only people who missed it were the officials,

1988 Euro's - van bastens goal for holland, Houghton goal beating us, Whealens wonder goal.

1990 World Cup - Platts last minute wonder strike, Englands crazy game against cameroon, linekers goal against germany, gazza's tears and the inevitable crap penalties.

1992 Euro's - Not winning at all and losing to sweden.

1994 World cup - Diana ross missing a pen.

1996 Euro's - Destroying holland, actually winning a penalty shootout then of course losing one...for me our best chance to win major honours.

1998 World Cup - Somehow finishing 2nd in our group thanks to a last minute goal by romania. Owens wonder goal. Beckham being sent off for a stupid kick, and losing on pens...again.

2000 Euro's - qualifying against scotland. after losing to sweden...again, Beating Germany. But failing to get through the group.

2002 World cup - thrashing germany in qualifying, Beating Argentina, Thrashing belgium, losing to a stupid goal to brazil.

2004 Euro's - Somehow lose to France first game, thrashing croatia, and the swiss. Losing again on pens.

2006 World Cup - Crusing through the group but still cant beat sweden, losing on pens...again.... to portugal.....again.

2008 Euro's - Actually enjoying it even though we didnt qualify, probably because its always nerve-racking watching england. Quality of football was fab.

I liked being a neutral and watching loads of footy but nothing beats watching a tournament with your team in it. There was always something missing.

World Cup 2002 - Having to go to school when we were one nil up against Brazil then the teacher taping the second half and us all watching it in the 'TV Room'. So pissed off with Seaman that day, what the fook was he doing?!

Euro 2004 - Beating France 1-0 then it all went tits up. Going out to Portugal to the worst ref I have ever seen. Disallowing Sol's goal for nothing. Also it was this time I turned on Sven, as he brought on fooking Darius Vassell for the injured Rooney, when if I remember correctly Heskey was on the bench! The Ricardo taking off his gloves for the penalty that he knew he would score. And he did.

World Cup 2006 - Battling to a 0-0 with Portugal then couldnt believe it when Lampard, Gerrard and Carragher all missed. Gutted! fooking Ricardo, he really was the penalty king.

I remember when we played Nigeria, me and a load of mates decided to take the day off school to watch it. We ended up getting absolutely bollocked for it the next day.

The most memorable tournament for me was Mexico 86. Maybe because I was only 13, and it's the first one I can really remember. Games played in scorching temperatures, some brilliant football from teams like Denmark. A classic quarter final between Brazil and France. England getting off to a bad start but finally getting into their stride. The Argentina game - the injustice of Maradona's first and the sheer brilliance of his second - best dribbling ever seen, watch it and see how the ball sticks to his foot. Bet Terry Butcher wishes he'd clotheslined him now!

The first real classic game I can remember watching though was the 1984 European Championship Semi Final between France and Portugal - if you've never seen it, look it up - it was an incredible match.

can't believe it's been 4 years since sitting in a dark empty pub, feeling miserable in trondheim....

the poetic nature of my misery that day has yet to be matched, just wanting the day to end but the sun never setting.

I've been in France for every major tournament I can ever remember.

Starting with France 98, the games against Romania and Argentina. Being delighted Owen had come off then bench to save the day but then conceding pretty much straight after. The Argentina game was odd, just remember everyone in the Bar and there was me and some other kids playing football outside it. Rushing inside everytime we heard a cheer, be it the English, or the Germans cheering against us. Then my dad just walking out the bar and going for a stroll along the beach because he refused to watch the pens.

In 2000 all I can really remember is the whole bar (same one) being livid at Phil Neville. Oh, and seeing the French go mad when they won it, shaking the cars in the street and everything.

2002 is the one I really remember and definitely my favourite. Walking down the beach at a stupid time in the morning to get a seat, Owen giving us the lead but then watching as Rivaldo scored right on half time. Then Ronaldinho scoring that ridiculous goal. This time everyone furious at Seaman. And I won't lie, I walked back in tears. Genuinely thought we were going to win the whole thing.

2004 I remember me and my dad sitting in a room full of French people as we travelling down there, we were so smug up until the 88th minute. Then having to quietly creep out lol Then the Rooney show in the other 2 games but then getting injured against Portugal. Everyone going mental when Campbell scored, but nobody realising it had been disallowed then once everythin calmed down everyone being confused as hell. More penalty heartbreak, at least my dad watched them this time.

2006 was pretty dull I reckon. Obviously apart from the Portugal game when Rooney got sent off and the Ronaldo wink. More penalty heartbreak. Everyone being baffled when Carragher was ordered to retake it.

And then obviously we didn't qualify in 2008 but it still provided some of the most memorable times. Me being an adopted Turk for the tournament and seeing the drama that followed them around. Sitting watching with my mum as they came back from 2-0 down in the pouring rain (the game where my love for Semih Senturk really came about) then that ridiculous game against the Czech Republic. Again 2-0 down but then won 3-2 late thanks to a clanger by Cech and a stunner by Nihat. But the most memorable was being sat in a French services, watching Croatia v Turkey with the most random group of people. A French guy with a Croatian wife, a german, some african chap, and then me sitting there with a Turkey shirt on. 119th minute being devastated as they scored, thinking it must be all over. But that man again, Semih, scoring an unbelievable goal in the 120th minute. Couldn't believe it. Then the penalties and the Croatian wife storming off. Semi final time against Germany, me and my mum and dad sitting in a bar right next to the friendliest German family i've ever seen (not hard though) another dramatic game. Semih scoring again! And the BBC losing the picture because of lighting or something and everyone just staring at a blank screen listening to Five Live. It's a good job the Germans understood English. Klose scored the winner iirc while the picture was lost.

I bloody love major tournaments :D

Remember when Campbell scored against Argentina in 98? My dad ran outside screaming and I was inside with my head in my hands as the ref disallowed it.

I was still on the floor of the pub celebrating when we all realised it was not a goal. Thanks to Mr A Shearer for that - a well aimed elbow in the goalie's throat for no particular reason denied Sol his goal and England victory.

1990 World Cup - Only remember the final and celebrating like mad, screaming (half my family's German) and my Mum running down from the attic because she thought something had happened to me :sweating: It would be the last time I'd root for the Germans until '06.

1992 Euro's - Went through so many emotions even though I was still just a young kid. I remember Denmark needing to beat France to make it through, the semi-final against the Netherlands where I thought we'd won it only for Rijkaard to score a very late equaliser; Henrik Andersens horrifying injury; the tenseness of the penalties with van Basten missing. And then the final where Schmeichel probably had the game of his life. John Jensens bullet of a goal, and Christoftes goal that stood despite handball (and it seemed nobody cared since no-one wanted the Germans to win :P). Epic tournament.

1994 World cup - First tourno I watched from start to end. I remember Hagi's great goal against Colombia? It was one of the dullest finals ever though...

1996 Euro's - This was a bit of a downer from a Danish point of view. The humiliating defeat to Croatia and failing to qualify from the group. The England games were entertaining though, and I remember cheering for the Czechs in the final despite being part German...

1998 World Cup - Epic tourno again. A bit of a slow and unimpressive start, but we went through and completely thrashed Nigeria. The quarter-final against Brazil left me with mixed emotions as I thought we played so well only to lose out so narrowly. I remember Jørgensen scoring in the second minute and my dad and I rubbed our eyes in disbelief. Going in at half-time 2-1 down we thought it was over only for Brian Laudrup to score after a classic Roberto Carlos gaffe. Loved his celebration. Unfortunately it wasn't Schmeichel's best game, but when Rieper thumped a header against the bar in the last minute which would have drawn the game level, I just knew it wasn't to be. Loved the Croatians beating Germany as well

2000 Euro's - Terrible tourno, despite living in the country it was held in. The Danes and Belgians were embarrassingly poor. I remember the Dutch cheating their way past the Czechs in the group stage (with the oh-so-respected Collina awarding a penalty that never ever was in the dying minutes). I didn't bother to watch the final though as I really dislike the French and the Italians...

2002 World cup - This was a really fun tournament! Had to love South Korea reaching the semi's even if they did get an extreme amount of help from the officials. I even felt sorry for the Italians!! Spain were also cheated out of the 1/8-final agains the Republic. But with their players fighting and running like their lives depended on it, and the idolisation of Hiddink was certainly entertaining! Another good tourno for Denmark, adding to the ultimate French humiliation, despite them having Zidane back. That game against England was one I'd like to forget though... what a horror show that was!

2004 Euro's - Well well, just as one thought the time of giant-killings was over, Greece pulled off a trick even more noteworthy than Denmark in '92. Even though I felt very sorry for the Czechs who had a fantastic tournament and were IMO the best side at the tourno (which the Danes unfortunately fell victim of). But once the Greeks reached the final, it was the same over again: Everyone wanted the Greeks to complete this amazing run. Also loved how the 'Scandinavian conspiracy' knocked out the Italians... I watched the game against Sweden at the City Hall square in Copenhagen. There must've been at least 20-30.000 thousand people there that went nuts when the full-time whistle blew. Watching the simultaneous highlights of Cassano scoring a winner at the death against Bulgaria only to run to the bench and find his teammates looking gloomy and then breaking down in tears. Oh the Schadenfreude!! All the accusations before and after the game from Buffon et al. Served them well those pesky spaghettis!!

2006 World Cup - For once the Germans played some entertaining football which was full of movement and panache. Something I never thought I'd see from a German side. It was fully deserved that they got the Bronze, and with the whole euphoria in the country I wouldn't have begrudged them a winners medal. The Ivory Coast and Ghana were some of the highlights of a tournament which was largely a bit dull though...

2008 Euro's - Once again Hiddink pulled off a coup with Russia this time. It was a shame that they met the Netherlands so early in the knockout phase though. Easily the best sides along with the imperious Spaniards. Excellent quality of football throughout.

2002 - can only remember laughing a bit when seaman messed up. Sat watching the match in school rather than doing any work

2004 - Enjoyed the tournament, couldn't work out why campbell's goal was disallowed

2006 - Pretty poor all in all, couldn't work out why rooney decided to give carvalho a vasectomy with his boot though

2008 - Felt a bit jealous of the french & italians given how close we got to qualifying instead of them but with the group we would have got we wouldn't have lasted long there. Still puzzled to this day as to why that goal was given in the Holland V Italy game when it was clearly offside.

Earliest memory 1990 Packie Bonner saving penalties (5 years old) and wanting to imitate him on the sofa in the living room

1994 Houghton's chipped goal against Italy.

1994 Terry "I'm a muppet" Phelan trying to head back to the keeper from the halfway line with all the power of an infant so Holland could get the ball and knock us out.

2002- Robbie Keane's injury time equaliser against Germany.

2002 - Other R Keane throwing his toys out of the pram.

One of my favourite world cup moments ever was Bergkamp's goal in the last minute against Argentina at 1998

1994

The good: Eric Wynalda's sensational free kick against Switzerland--the moment that made become mad about soccer. I've got so many other good memories from USA 1994 because it was the first World Cup I'd ever watched. I was 11, and it was awesome.

The bad: Leonardo's vicious elbow that cracked Tab Ramos's skull. The Brazilian got set off, but he should have also been handcuffed.

The ugly: Andres Escobar.

1998

The good: Bergkamp's winner against Argentina; sweet Jesus, I'm not sure I've seen anything that's topped that since. Honorable mention goes to Zidane, the talisman.

The bad: USA 1-2 Iran. It still hurts me to think about that game.

The ugly: The Beckham/Simeone incident.

2002

The good (part 1): I was up all night in NYC with my brother to catch USA-Portugal at a soccer-friendly bar at 5 am (and, importantly, also a letting-underage-people-drink-friendly bar). I remember freaking out and going on all night about how Portugal were going to kick our asses. Then just four minutes in, corner, John O'Brien finds the ball on the back post and buries it. Mayhem at the bar. Twenty-five minutes later, Landon Donovan sends in a cr... it's deflected... and it's in? IT'S IN! Holy shit. And while we still haven't settled down from that, Tony Sanneh toasts Portugal down the right wing and sends in a ball that Brian McBride meets with a diving header... it's 36 minutes in and we're beating Luis fooking Figo's team 3-0. There's beer dripping from the ceiling. The bar has turned into a mosh pit.

The good (part 2): USA 2-0 Mexico. Yes, the USA soaked up a lot of pressure after taking the early lead on a wonderfully-worked play on a seemingly-innocuous quick free kick taken in their own end. Yes, the USA got away with O'Brien's beautiful handball clearance in his own box in the second half with the score still 1-0. But what Bruce Arena did before and during that game remains the both best strategical and the best tactical performance any USMNT manager has ever had. And it was so, so fooking satisfying to knock out those pricks. I'll never forget what happened on June 17, 2002 in Jeonju. I could wind up getting Alzheimer's and forgetting my own name but I bet I'd still remember that game.

The bad: Rivaldo's antics against Turkey.

The ugly: Korea/Japan 2002 had, without a doubt, the worst officiating I've seen in a World Cup. I mentioned one big blown call above, but there were so many more. Belgium being denied cruelly against Brazil. Offside calls and non-calls for South Korea against Italy and Spain that reeked of a fix.The one that killed me, though, was Torsten Frings' handball against the USA that denied us a late equalizer. It was a CLEAR handball, and not only that, I also believe the ball crossed the line. But neither that blind fook Hugh Dallas nor his linesman were able to see it.

2006

The good: The most likeable German team ever? They did such a good job playing down their expectations before the tournament and Jurgen Klinsmann really got the best out of the young players on his team. Call me crazy, but that team was a joy to watch and easy to root for.

The bad: Disaster for the Yanks. Slaughtered by the Czechs in the first game, and the next day, one of the few times in my life I've ever called out sick from work due to a hangover. Jorge Larrionda going red-card-crazy in the Italy game, and with it all to play for against Ghana, Claudio Reyna on the ground in agony with yet another serious injury with the ball in the back of our net.

The ugly: The greatest player of my generation ending his career in a most ignominious fashion.

I completely forgot about this. Just watched it again and what a horrendous thing that was. I don't even remember Leonardo as a dirty player either...

That was some of the most ridiculous play-acting ever. I remember both laughing and being incensed at what he did.

Ive just watched the full Korea/Japan video its brilliant. Great world cup. USA V Portugal. The Koreans v Italy awful decisions.

And I also forgot to mention Ronaldo (The Original) One of the greatest players i've ever seen he was phenomenal at the world cups. Loved watching him. And Zidane's 2006 exit, what a shame but easily the greatest player i've ever seen.

Right, he wasn't!

We actually let them back into the game. Jeff Agoos blasted one past Friedel--Christ, Agoos had a terrible World Cup. I think he also conceded a penalty against South Korea, but Friedel stopped it (Friedel actually stopped two PKs in that tourney, a World Cup first).
