MIA - Born Free

Maybe this should reside in the Music section but I think it's debate-worthy enough regardless of the music itself to sit here.

This is one of the most incredible things I've seen in a long time, think it's been doing the rounds for a few weeks now and already there's a good pile of controversy building up.

Just be interesting to know what others think - I think the track itself is fooking brilliant and the video absolutely stunning.

Unbelivably there are already those who are accusing it of being anti-ginger; it's amazing how narrow-minded and stupid some people are!

Maybe I'm just a grouch, but I find M.I.A. to be annoying and her messages to be nothing more than clichés wrapped in slick production.

I think the "Born Free" video is a perfect example of both.

/\/\/\Y/\? Oh, hipsters love triangles.

I like the idea of the video although I've never heard of MIA before. The USA will be like that soon, what with those FEMA camps and all that

The video tries too hard to be "clever" and provocative. And is - like others have pointed out already - neither funny nor sad, but simply self-indulgent.

It's Romain Gavras looking at you, telling you "look how smart I am/my editor is".

And I don't like the track. Mostly noise - is that what you call "music" these days?

Shocking.

The video was self indulgent waffle and really wasn't that fussed on the music.

Was it just me or was the use of "Our day will come" (Irish - Tiocfaidh ar la - a republican saying) and rounding up of gingers anti-irish? :dunno:

what i gleened was it was saying you can pick on any 'group' and persicute them, blacks, muslims, homosexuals, irish, jews....or gingers. it's just whoever is, unfortunate enough to be, the current convienient 'bogeyman-group'.

of course no group of people have the moral high ground, when it comes to having a perscuted group of choice.

Not sure you can call it anti-Irish though? For a start it's obviously "pro" the captives not the cops so it'd be sympathetic to Ireland if it was indeed about "them" but I just think it was using first overweight and then ginger people as make believe "minorities" to illustrate some sort of silly, faux-shocking point.

The mural was kinda IRA inspired I suppose but phrases like Our Time Will Come are common in nationalist politics. There's even a Welsh equivelant, something like fe godwn ni eto which is like we'll rise again or whatever.

The whole thing really deserves no more attention than When September Ends or whatever, it's just a pop-"political" band with a high budget is all.

Oh, and as for the music, Le Tigre were doing it first.

Not a fan of this track, though I have enjoyed some of MIA's music in the past and respect her as an artist.

The video isn't exactly a classic either, as Finners says it's trying to make a shocking point about gingers or overweight people being targeted instead of more familiar minorities, but this has been done before numerous times and isn't exactly original. Have to say I got a little bored towards the end.

I've never heard of MIA before and can't remember any of the words to the song but I've read a few music sites comments and the number of folk who thought it was anti-ginger was funny.

All I remember the video meaning was that this sort of thing happens and who knows which group/stereotype/nation is next on the list. (it's obviously the true patriots in the USA's turn soon but that's another story :D)

Not my cup of tea music wise but the message of the video is quite important, unless you will enjoy living in a Police State.

FEMA wants YOU!! :lei1:

Can't believe you've never heard of MIA! :o Most well known track is probably Galang, a few years back now.

And seriously, you'd have to be thick as several short planks to think this video is anti-ginger.

The message is that segregating people becauce they are black or asian or whatever is as stupid as doing it because they are ginger. There's absolutely no difference.

To think that this video is "anti-ginger" is akin to thinking that "Born in the USA" is an American patriotic song - I.E. missing the point entirely.

I posted that query with half a tongue firmly in my cheek. (I was curious about the slogan though)

I didn't think that you thought it was anti-ginger but I was amazed at how many folk in comments sections on other sites thought it was! I'd never heard of this band/person before so had a quick look around to read about them.

It's hard to tell what some of the 'arty' folk mean when they use slogans though, so not sure who or what the slogan referred to.

:D No never heard of them/her.

Your interpretation of the message of the video is spot on I think. Obviously been done before but there's nowt wrong with repeating good and important messages.
