AoWW Posted 1 August 2010 Posted 1 August 2010 Thinking of taking my Mum for a few day's break down to Dorset. Never really explored the area - just driven through. Any suggestions for places to visit, places to stay (thinking we'll B&B probably), places to eat, etc, etc...
Matt Posted 1 August 2010 Posted 1 August 2010 Used to go Bournemouth quite often when I was younger, loved Bournemouth really nice place, nice beach. Not been for years. Not that that gives you any help in what you have asked.
Smudge Posted 1 August 2010 Posted 1 August 2010 I love Lyme Regis . The Cobb is steeped in history; two familiar period dramas were shot there; French Lieutenants Woman and Jane Austen's Persuasion. Just along the coast is Seaton where you can find ammonites in the cliffs and Exmouth, also a nice little town.
Jay Posted 1 August 2010 Posted 1 August 2010 true story... A horse once stole my Sandwich while in the new Forest, it was corned beef my favourite and needless to say I was NOT amused and slightly scared. wasn't interested in my parents of brothers sandwiches although they didn't have corned beef! so my advice don't take corned beef sandwiches if you are heading into the new forest for a picnic!
Nationwider Posted 1 August 2010 Posted 1 August 2010 We go to Bournemouth a lot, but stay with family so I can't recommend a B&B. We tend to stay around Bournemouth for the beaches but there's loads of nice places to see....depends what you want - IoW, Christchurch, Poole Harbour, Swanage, Weymouth, Dorchester all good, very quaint etc. Link Edit: oh, avoid Bank Holiday weekend as its traffic hell.
Webbo Posted 1 August 2010 Posted 1 August 2010 South Devon is probably the most beautiful place on earth, the roads are a flippin' nightmare though. I'll be back tomorrow so I won't have to worry for another year. I know that's not what you asked, I just wanted to shoehorn that in.
Poody57 Posted 1 August 2010 Posted 1 August 2010 Oh Dorset you say - Well you gotta go to Weymouth, Lovely place to go. Then there's Bowleaze Cove I have visited Wareham that's an old Saxon Town.
Orkneyfox Posted 1 August 2010 Posted 1 August 2010 Dorset is a very beautiful county but most roads are very busy so you have to be patient. also quite hilly so depends how fit your Mum is. Bournemouth well adapted to older folk. Durdle Door is a good beach and there is a great tank museum at Bovington. Cream teas also nice everywhere. The montague motor museum and Bucklers Hard although just in Hampshire also worth a visit. Parts of the New Forest extend into Dorset. I seem to remember that Bournemouth used to be in Hampshire but when "they" re-organised the English counties they gave it to Dorset or Dorest County Council would not have had enough rates coming in. Went to see a great american all girl rock band who rejoiced in the unfortunate name of Fanny, great band, great name, great night out - in Bournemouth, more years ago than I care to recall!.
Mee Posted 2 August 2010 Posted 2 August 2010 We went Weymouth for years when i was younger. Loved it there. Donkey rides galore.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 3 August 2010 Posted 3 August 2010 Lulworth Cove is a nice little spot, and not far away is Durdle Door, if you like coastal scenic
Fosse Boy Posted 3 August 2010 Posted 3 August 2010 As I recall there was an awesome dinosaur museum in Dorchester. Can't beat a good dinosaur museum.
