In more than one episode the character of Shaun is heard to saying "Whatever!" in a typical sarkey way teenagers talk today. He definetly says it to his mum in the 3rd or 4th episode. I grew up in 80's I don't remember anybody saying that in the same context to which it it is used today. I thought its a word American teenagers said and which has made its way across the Atlantic. Im sure I first heard it used in the Fresh Prince of Bell Air. I think it become more popular with the likes of Paris Hilton etc which was then picked up by our teenagers over here. No way was it used in Grimsby in 1986 in Thatchers Britain. Am I wrong or being over critical at decent spinoff series?

Yes.

Judging by that you'd be a fvcking nightmare to watch a film with. lol

You see I thought it was Grimsby. But thats in Lincolnshire i thought this was set in Yorkshire (I could be wrong though)

Edit: Supposed to be Cleethorpes so Lincolnshire it is then.

Loads of different northern accents flying around, could be anywhere. Apparently most of the series was filmed in Sheffield, whereas the film was done in Nottingham/Grimsby.

I'm pretty sure This Is England was set in Sheffield although Shane Meadows always avoids making it obvious as to where the setting to show that all suburbs/estates pretty much look the same.

As to the criticism above of the film...how on earth is that glorifying racism and fascism? I could understand it if the films message was subtle but that isn't exactly Shane Meadows his style. His films are more like being hit in the face by a sledgehammer!

There were some things I didn't like about the series but on the whole it was good. The use of music doesn't really work in a tv show like it does in a film and that kind of bugged me. However the improvised scenes in the final episode made up for it. No way was the argument between lol and her Dad scripted and I thought the actors did a fantastic job

I thought the music used was really effective. Agree with you on the rest though. TV isn't always about easy viewing. Tbh I think it was the best thing i've seen on TV since The Office nearly a decade ago.

It was a lot better for it though. Proper arguments go like that much tension that the person repeats and stutters. Not polished like most scriptted argumentive scenes.

Can't wait for This Is England '88, which is supposed to be shown on TV this Christmas.

One of the best TV shows of recent, it's got flair, character, a great script and above all, a great cast.

Shame we'll have to wait for This Is England '90 for another year...dry.png
