MC Prussian Posted 14 September 2010 Posted 14 September 2010 I'm loving it! Wasn't THAT much into the movie (although I admire Shane Meadows' style and his persistance - "Dead Man's Shoes" will live on as his best movie forever), yet when you know the characters, there's this natural curiosity in finding out how they're been doing in the past three years (the gap between the film and the new series). The visuals, the dialogue, the actors and the soundtrack all add up to one unique experience - much like the Red Riding Trilogy. I was only 6 at the time and some of the issues are really England-only, but the series manages to capture the feel of the time quite well. Wonder if they're going to include a reference to Tchernobyl at one point, too. Hope they'll extend TIE '86. It's a bit of a TV gem. DVD's out in October. Must-buy.
Mikey Posted 14 September 2010 Posted 14 September 2010 Was alright, but will never beat the first episode. That 10 minutes with the bikers in the first one was the funniest thing on TV for a long time.
sdb Posted 15 September 2010 Posted 15 September 2010 yesterday didn't match the standards of the film and episode 1, for me. less subtlety, more and more like a soap opera. tried to do too much last night imo. Still decent, mind.
iBleedLeicesterColours Posted 15 September 2010 Posted 15 September 2010 Finished, very good episode. Wish I could go back to the 80's.
sdb Posted 15 September 2010 Posted 15 September 2010 Finished, very good episode. Wish I could go back to the 80's. really??!
Fosse Boy Posted 15 September 2010 Author Posted 15 September 2010 Half the episode was people shagging!
lildave3 Posted 16 September 2010 Posted 16 September 2010 Finished, very good episode. Wish I could go back to the 80's. What part of that episode made you think that?! Oh, and the girl that plays Smell definitely looks and sounds special needs.
Guest Bilo Posted 16 September 2010 Posted 16 September 2010 What part of that episode made you think that?! Oh, and the girl that plays Smell definitely looks and sounds special needs. Her voice annoys me. Always sounds like she's squeezing her nose.
stez Posted 16 September 2010 Posted 16 September 2010 It was hilarious when they were all trying to turn they're bikes around I thought it was awesome, the bully on the bike made me laugh! i hope he's in it more disappointed he wasn't in this week's episode, hopefully he's being used sparingly. "fvck off with your ginger chips" loved that line! Finished, very good episode. Wish I could go back to the 80's. you can't've been there then! i reckon combo might turn up in the wake of lo.l and milky getting found out.

Also the biker lads are back. Think I saw a trailer with them having a fight against Milky, Woody etc..
sdb Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 amazing tonight i thought. beating Inbetweeners for me (in regards to exciting c4 programmes/returns...type thingy...)
rico Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Good series, but theres not gonna be a happy ending to this
Guest Bilo Posted 22 September 2010 Posted 22 September 2010 Good episode but the rape scene left me feeling sick. Feel uneasy just thinking about it to be honest. Really quite a bleak series.
m00nie Posted 22 September 2010 Posted 22 September 2010 was looking forward to the series after seeing the film but tonight's episode killed it for me...
LCFC-ARAB Posted 22 September 2010 Posted 22 September 2010 I think the people who made this misjudged what people were expecting from it. I wanted a series of a load of young people from the 80's having fun, with maybe a couple of serious story lines, not the proper deep stuff that we are getting! The rape was a bit to far in my eyes for this show, but i am still enjoying it... well as much as you can enjoy bearded man rape the bully on the bike was the funniest part of the show for me again, 'Engines off!' he's awesome hopefully things do turn a bit happier but i can't see that happening by the end of the series, which is a bit of a shame
CosbehFox Posted 22 September 2010 Posted 22 September 2010 Good episode but the rape scene left me feeling sick. Feel uneasy just thinking about it to be honest. Really quite a bleak series. It was bleak in the 1980s. Reminds me of Boys From the Blackstuff in that regard. The rape scene for me was the most disgusting and shocking thing I'd seen on television. Now, I've watched the likes of Clockwork Orange and similar, they add music and effects all too lessen the blow. This scene was incredibly raw and too realistic in fashion which to be fair should be a testiment to the acting as well. In a way, the programme has been too true to the era rather than this 'idea' of the good bits, Meadows has stayed faithful to the problems at the time. I'd love a spin off of the biker lads.
iBleedLeicesterColours Posted 22 September 2010 Posted 22 September 2010 Loving this series. The Rape was horrible. But i guess its harsh reality.
sdb Posted 22 September 2010 Posted 22 September 2010 This is England was a bleak film, I don't know why people are surprised the show is too. Don't watch it if you want funny, lighthearted stuff. It was 11 o'clock too. Distressing yes but not done in an overly distasteful way (rape can never be portrayed in a nice way, obviously - and you can't ban TV from documenting some of the awful things that can go on in this world). Hard to stomach content doesn't automatically mean bad TV. As for the bikers, hilarious in episode 1 but not yesterday.
Guest Mee-9 Posted 22 September 2010 Posted 22 September 2010 The rape was really a step too far. L ol's dad wasn't even in the film. Made me feel sick watching that scene. It's been a decent series, but last nights episode wasn't the best. I'd have rather the series been focused around Shaun and the group, now it's all about shagging. Combo should have been in the series from the start. Not just the last episode.
