Jimmy Posted 30 August 2010 Posted 30 August 2010 BBC League One Southampton have dismissed manager Alan Pardew two days after their 4-0 win over Bristol Rovers.Dean Wilkins, previously a member of Pardew's coaching staff, has been named caretaker boss and will be assisted by under-21 coach Martin Hunter. First-team coach Wally Downes and goalkeeping coach Stuart Murdoch have also been relieved of their duties. Saints, who started the season as favourites to win promotion, are currently 14th in the League One table. "The club has decided that, to achieve its well known targets, it is essential to make changes to the management," said a Southampton statement. "We recognise that frequent changes to the football management are unlikely to assist in the winning of trophies and promotions. "However, we are taking these steps to achieve our aims, which we share with all supporters, to get promoted this season, and secure long term stability and progress for our football operations. Pardew, previously in charge at Reading, West Ham and Charlton, was appointed in July 2009. Saints started last season with a 10-point deduction after entering administration the previous campaign. The club won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy during Pardew's first season in charge but finished one place outside the play-off zone despite a late-season surge. There was speculation that Pardew would lose his job at the end of last season but the 49-year-old remained in charge and strengthened his squad in the summer, signing the likes of Ryan Dickson, Frazer Richardson and Danny Butterfield. Southampton lost their opening game of the current season, at home against Plymouth, drew their second league fixture and thrashed Rovers on Saturday. They also defeated Bournemouth in the Carling Cup before losing to Premier League Bolton 1-0 in the second round. Pardew is the fourth Football League manager to leave his club this season, after Steve Coppell at Bristol City, Kevin Blackwell at Sheffield United and Chris Turner at Hartlepool.
The Doctor Posted 30 August 2010 Posted 30 August 2010 christ - it's been a month of the season and they still have an extra match to play. They win that and they're in a play-off spot and 3 points of top. Strange to say the least.
Bob Farley Posted 30 August 2010 Posted 30 August 2010 very odd, any news on a team that are after him?
Narborough_fox Posted 30 August 2010 Posted 30 August 2010 Didn't we sack MA after winning 4-0... <_< 4-1
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 30 August 2010 Posted 30 August 2010 Silly decision I think, especially as they have only played 3 games.
Hitesh Posted 30 August 2010 Posted 30 August 2010 4-1 It was that goal that did it for Milan! On the Pardew sacking, stupid timing all round and have a feeling they might regret this!
Jimothy Posted 30 August 2010 Posted 30 August 2010 Maybe the people who have taken charge since the owners death don't like him.
FoxyPV Posted 30 August 2010 Posted 30 August 2010 Silly, silly move especially after what he did last year. There's definitely more to this story than just footballing reasons.
dandannieldanok Posted 30 August 2010 Posted 30 August 2010 Maybe the people who have taken charge since the owners death don't like him. If you believe media reports the previous deceased owners were close to sacking him anyway.
Jimmy Posted 9 September 2010 Author Posted 9 September 2010 they said Adkins and his team have agreed terms just for compo to be sorted
davieG Posted 9 September 2010 Posted 9 September 2010 they said Adkins and his team have agreed terms just for compo to be sorted Well they're not going to do that and then not interview him - a bit of poetic licence on my part.. Besides I bet they've already spoken to/interviewed him to see if he's interested.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 9 September 2010 Posted 9 September 2010 Surprised Scunny gave Southampton permission to talk with him.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 9 September 2010 Posted 9 September 2010 Southampton have withdrawn their offer to S****horpe boss Nigel Adkins to become their new manager, according to Iron chairman Steve Wharton. Adkins and assistant Andy Crosby were expected to join Saints but refused to leave until compensation package was agreed by the two clubs. Warton said: "They gave him an ultimatum to resign from his position as S****horpe United manager. "He was not prepared to do that until a compensation package had been agreed." Adkins is taking training at S****horpe as usual on Thursday, in preparation for their Championship clash with Bristol City on Saturday. The 45-year-old took over at Glanford Park in 2006 following the departure of Brian Laws to Sheffield Wednesday after a decade as the club's physiotherapist. He was expected to replace Alan Pardew, who was sacked from his role in August. Pardew was appointed as Saints boss in July 2009 but was dismissed from his role just three games into the current season. Southampton currently lie 18th in League One having started as favourites to win the league. Adkins became caretaker manager at S****horpe in November 2006 before being appointed in the full-time position a month later. He guided the Iron to promotion to the Championship in 2007 and again in 2009 following their relegation in 2008.
dandannieldanok Posted 9 September 2010 Posted 9 September 2010 Haha so basically they didn't want to pay compensation and now they've lost their number one target. That club is fast becoming a joke.
Simo86 Posted 9 September 2010 Posted 9 September 2010 I hope they get a manager soon and get back to winning ways, I backed them for the title at the start of the season!
Wymsey Posted 9 September 2010 Posted 9 September 2010 I feel Phil Brown will go to them, after getting Hull from the lower side of the pyramid of football to the top, he knows how to get out of the league Soton are in.
