Could Abe be our Zheng Zhi?

Many critics say that Oriental players don't ever 'make it' in English football, but apart from Sun Jihai, I can name another one... Zheng Zhi. Zhi is a player who I've always rated and I know Zhi was Chinese and not Japanese, does anyone think that Abe will have the same effect on our team?? I've got this funny feeling he could be the 'find' of the season !

A lot do fail yes, but it's like a lot of over sea signing which have never played in English football before. Let's hope Abe is not one of these though.

Also, does Ji Sung Park count?

I'd love to see this huge list of Japanese players that failed in England, to be honest.

Hide Nakata was a legend and came right at the end of his career and to be fair, for his age, looked reasonable at Bolton. Junichi Inamoto did reasonably well, for his ability, at Fulham and as far as I know was pretty popular there. He also did pretty well under Megson at West Brom before he left, n'all.

The SPL might not be quite the standard of the Championship, on the whole, but possibly Celtic's best player of this last decade was Shunsuke Nakamura who coped fine with the physicality of Scottish football as well as the climate and culture over here.

Away from football the Japanese settle brilliantly over here, having a huge appreciation for Western culture in their younger generations - many of our cities have a vibrant Japanese community and whilst Leicester isn't necessarily notably amongst them there's fair evidence that many of Yuki's compatriots have settled well in "Blighty."

Back to football, if you want to span this judgemental net a little wider and look at pan-Asian footballers (though, for the record, I resent, on behalf of many of my good friends, this assumption that Japanese is "the same" as Korean or Chinese) then what about the remarkable successes of Park Ji-Sung and now Lee Chung Yong? And though infinitely less spectacular, Seol Ki Hyeon has ground out a perfectly respectable and consistent career in English football.

All in all this myth has always baffled me. Simply put, not many Asian players come over here - it just isn't common. They're a little more prevalent on the continent but even so, they largely tend to stick to their own leagues. But those that do come, I don't exactly see a huge line of failures?

We should judge these players as individuals rather than nationalities. Just because Morinho is a brilliant manager doesn't mean every Portugese Manager will be.

We need to stop agreeing, it's freaking me out.

Say something inappropriately right wing.

He was 29 when he retired. Should have been in his prime. Sad.

How about Seol and Young-Pyo? Hopefully Chelsea sign Park Chu Young, really rate him.

Agreed, always had half an eye off the football though really. Was by far my favourite footballer when he was playing, in no small part due to being both Japanese and at Parma. lol

I could have gone on forever listing Koreans that have done alright either here or in other big leagues but I felt the point was made. Definitely agree with you, though.

Sounds like a different type of player to Zheng Zhi who was predominately attacking, but I see what you're getting at. I know it sounds strange but I think this guy will turn out to be pretty dependable and decent, simply because of the style of Japanese players. They're always energetic and press opponents so I think we'll be able to rely upon this bloke for a good effort over the season. Hopefully he'll bring quality too.

Zheng Zhi is on the bench at Celtic. He was a good player. I don't know, maybe because he can't adapt here in europe. Honestly, i don't follow his career. Chinese, South korean and japanese are very different. They don't look like the same :-) lol

The korean are more athletic and have stamina. Chinese are tall , solid but slow. In the near future, they'll be good.

The japanese are the most skilfull in Asia ( in general ). Top foreigners in the J-league are brazilian.

The korean adapt well in england because it's physical. The k-league is physical.

The chinese, sorry, i don't know.

The japanese adapt well in holland and bundesliga.

It's only my opinion because i'm asian ( who live in belgium ) and my passion is japanese and asian football.

Nakamura, Nakata did well in the past in england and scotland.

All the japanese in the bundesliga ( dortmund, Schalke, wolsfburg..... ) are in the starting line up.

It's not about nationality, it's about the player. If he want to succeed, he need to be mantaly strong and need to adapt. No secret ;)

off topic: Arsenal sign a young japanese :scarf:

as mentioned other abe topic, I really hope the Leicester fans and the rest of the team make him feel as welcome as possible. mainly because of the culture shock of moving to the other side of the world which is usually shared amongst all east asian players. the bigger the reception we give him the bigger morale and confidence boost he will receive. Also would help him settle quicker. As long as we do that and keep off his back i think he will play some great football for us.

christ, you're asking for a lot there, there are some fans who'd boo lineker if he suddenly became 24 again and signed for us, if he didn't score a hattrick in his first half of football.

I wanted us to sign Zheng Zhi after Charlton's relegation to League 1. I remember him scoring a beauty at Molineux against Wolves for Charlton.
