marbelladave Posted 26 September 2010 Posted 26 September 2010 Well he's not really. Dyer and King are far more 'important.' As for those stats, well do they make sense? It might be early and I might be talking shit but they don't look right to me. IF we are conceding 2.33 goals a game with Wellens in the side then he's still not doing his job properly and we'll concede over 100 goals. Wellens is a serial grafter with an eye for a pass and without the ability to execute more often than not. Nothing more, nothing less. Very well put... I would add that I feel that he dwells on the ball too long, slowing up our attacking play, but I have to say that we miss his fiesty combativeness. I was hoping that Moreno would replace him as the 'enforcer' but there has been little sign of that so far... With our defence in tatters I think we need to look to shield them with two solid central midfielders, I'm thinking of a pairing from Moreno, King and Wellens as being the most defensively capable.
Stadt Posted 26 September 2010 Posted 26 September 2010 Wellens treatment kind of reminds me of how Michael Carrick is treated by the footballing community. Carrick often gets slated for misplaced passes and giving the ball away, but many fail to realise that between him and Darren Fletcher, it is him who has a better vision, better range of passing and a better all-round footballer. Likewise with Wellens. He might give the ball away more than Oakley or King, but he usually more than the others look for a forward pass rather than a safe side-way pass. If he makes 10 forward passes and through balls, some are bound to be over-hit and misplaced - law of averages. And he also get stuck in when needed with his tackling. Wellens is an OK Championship player. He's a useful player who can do a bit of everything. Not brilliant at anything, but decent at everything. Thats not possible.Oakley is the problem he constantly gives the ball away can shoot for jack.........Wellens problem is he's to eye of a needle
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 26 September 2010 Posted 26 September 2010 Richie Wellens has started 6 league games this season out of 8. In the two games he hasn't played we have shipped 9 goals, with an average 4.5 a game. Whilst when he has started we have conceded 14 goals in 6 games. An average of 2.33 a game. From that it's clear he is missed from the midfield when he doesn't play. He add's some much needed steel in the midfield, and the ability to keep hold of the ball to allow the defence to re-organise. He was missed against Portsmouth, more than you can believe. This is just some more evidence that people don't understand what Richie Wellens does, he does sooooo much more than just his fantastic vision. This is a worthless statistic, and proves NOTHING.
Dan Posted 26 September 2010 Posted 26 September 2010 Wellens is shite and vastly overrated. 1 good half in the last 3 games isnt good enough for someone whos see's so much of the ball! The amount of our attacks which fook up because of him are unreal. So what if he setup 2 goals against Cardiff, thats his job and he doesnt do it very well. How he did get hauled of yesterday was beyond belief! He needs bringing down a peg or 2 and realise he isnt Paul Scholes! Again, just another average Championship player. Wellens is essentially a talented player but who thinks he's far better than he actually is. He's also wildly inconsistent which leads to overreactions such as this once he's had a couple of poor games. The worry this year so far is that he's giving the ball away with regulation passes, last year he gave the ball away trying to be creative/play an eye of the needle pass. I know what you mean about thinking he's better than he is, does try and show off too much at times, in his defence though it often comes off. I think someone made a comment about him being more positive about his passing, even if he gives it away sometimes - that was spot on to be fair. This is a worthless statistic, and proves NOTHING. Your typical childish as fvck reaction just further proves what a div you are, so it did prove something really.
Corky Posted 26 September 2010 Posted 26 September 2010 We needed someone who would battle and get stuck in on Friday in the midfield. King's not like that, Oakley certainly isn't, I think we might've missed Wellens in that respect.
Kitchandro Posted 26 September 2010 Posted 26 September 2010 People who think Wellens is shite are morons. He is the best technical player at the club and has a great football brain. He's the only one who can or even tries to open up a defence with a pass. We missed him on Friday. Really don't see why people don't rate him.

Kitchandro Posted 26 September 2010 Posted 26 September 2010 It's always his bloody turn! Nobody ever blames Waghorn and King for going missing (not that I don't rate them, but they do sometimes) and what the hell has Abe done (YET) to prove he deserves his place instead of Wellens? Wellens always gets criticised for no reason and when he has one bad performance veryone's doubly on his back.

Tilley Posted 26 September 2010 Posted 26 September 2010 Wellens gets stuck in and is proven in this division, why Abe and Oakley were in instead of him, only Paulo knows.
unreachable Posted 26 September 2010 Posted 26 September 2010 Wellens is a work horse who doesn't go missing during games like Oakley and King. He may make mistakes but is hungry to be involved, get hold of the ball and do the ugly part of the game. In the abstract Sousa's principles are excellent but until we have the players to suit his style of play consistently we need a more defensive formation to give more cover to our shaky defence and Wellens in the midfield is the best that we have to offer at the moment.
