Eriksson was a Swedish football player whose playing career was ended by injury in 1975. He went on to become a successful club football manager from 1978 to 2001, in the Swedish, Portuguese and Italian top football divisions, most notably with Italian club Lazio. During this time Eriksson achieved several national league, domestic cup and three notable UEFA competition wins. With his achievements in this period, Eriksson is so far the only manager who has achieved the league-and-cup double in three different countries (Sweden, Portugal and Italy). From the Lazio job onwards he has consistently employed fellow Swede Tord Grip as his assistant at all clubs and national teams he has managed.

On leaving Lazio, Eriksson controversially became the first foreign manager of the English national team, succeeding Kevin Keegan in 2001. He had a relatively long spell as England manager, managing the team for two World Cups and Euro 2004 in between. While being steadily and repeatedly supported by the Football Association and the players and fans, and having attained an exceptional overall statistical record with England and losing an all time record of only five competitive games 2001 - 2006, it was announced in January 2006 that Eriksson would step down after the World Cup in that June, which England subsequently exited at the quarter-final stage in a dramatic game in which Wayne Rooney was given a red card and the remaining ten players continued for an hour and produced a draw forcing a penalty shoot out that saw them defeated. The announcement that Eriksson was to depart from the job as England team coach was met with extensive protests and a "Save Our Sven" campaign from the Official England Fan organisation backed by several British national newspapers.

After a year out of the game, in July 2007 Eriksson agreed to a three-year contract with the recently taken over top-flight but struggling English club Manchester City[2] worth £2 million a year plus bonuses[3], agreed with their wealthy new Thai owner Thaksin Shinawatra. After a good start to the season that saw the club briefly at the top of the premier league for the first time in three decades and win "the double" against Manchester United, and with his early signings creating an impact, it was announced by many news sources that in a surprise move, Shinawatra claimed that he wished to replace Eriksson in May 2008 after only one full season, because of an "avalanche of very poor results which is unacceptable at this level". This ignored the fact that Eriksson had produced an all time (joint) record of season league points won and the best results since the 1970's, lifting the club to a final position of 9th in the premier league in spite of the players on field protest and non-performance in the closing games. On 2 June 2008 and in spite of a players "work to rule" that had disastrous effect on the last few results, a fans protest march to the clubs Eastland stadium and yet another extensive "Save Our Sven" campaign, Eriksson officially left Manchester City. On 3 June 2008, he was officially signed to become the manager of the Mexican national team against the advice of his closest business associates who warned of "deep divisions within the Mexican Football Federation" and an "underlying potential xenophobia among players and fans" and despite the mass protests by the Mexican fans that preceded his appointment. He was sacked on 2 April 2009. Immediately afterwards, the Mexican fans' association held a "victory rally" attended by approximately 30,000 angry supporters.[4] Eriksson was Director of Football at English League Two team Notts County from July 2009 to February 2010, attracted by a Middle East consortium which claimed to seek to take the club to the top of the Premiership. Sven-Goran Eriksson was appointed Ivory Coast coach for the 2010 World Cup finals. "His mission will be to lead Ivory Coast team during the World Cup and to make sure it fares honourably, which will be difficult in a competition featuring the world's best 32 sides." Senior members of the Ivory Coast team commented that Eriksson had "worked miracles" in the short time with the squad and commented with disappointment that they could not keep him to ensure further progress. Sven-Goran Eriksson is unique in leading one team (Mexico) to qualify and another team (Ivory Coast) during a World Cup tournament. Afterwards he was linked to the vacant manager's position at Premier League club Aston Villa [5]

Was just going to paste the same in. Whether you want him to be manager or not you can't deny he has been a successful manager. In fact the only country he's managed in and not won the league was this one. But did a very decent job at man city. Lets hope he can transform our season.

Unbeleivable !!

Curbishly or Pardew...won bugger all between them in comparison, seem to always be in relegation dogfights and not always winning them ....

Sometime I wonder if the negativity that seems to abound on here, and dont get me started on the Moan In, beggers belief, ok Sven isnt everyone cup of tea but his track record is very good, and certainly makes PS success as a twice Champions League winner AS A PLAYER !!, seem insignificant as the league is littered with ex players who won things, doesnt mean that any of them are going to be any great shakes in the managerial world.

As for wanting an English manager...thank goodness we didnt appoint Alex Furgeson or MON, the current situation with the England managers role shows that there is a shortage of good English mangers, we might not like it but thats just a fact of life at the minute.

Clearly you can see from the above that he's failed wherever he has been, and only ever managed Sunday League footballers. Why the heck would we employ this clown as our manager when we could have world beaters such as Iain Dowie and Phil Brown? Oh, I understand, we've had to settle for second best because we'd obviously struggle to tempt such big names to our prestigious club having reached the lofty heights of being bottom of the Championship. Seriously, some people amaze me!

by the way i asked for opinons not an argument !

after sousa it would make sense for an english manager again but, like i said i wouldnt mind him here and i feel he may suprise us all but that remains to be seen

Were ment to be in this together but every one is different okay? as long as we perform on the day then i couldnt care who is boss

Good response. Just for the record, I'm not after an argument, just fed up with reading posts questioning the guys credentials in football. Had you questioned his track record as a manager in the Championship then I'd have been more inclined to debate, but again given the guys level of success in such a wide variety of leagues and levels then I can't really see him struggling to adapt to the Championship. Furthermore, I wasn't a big fan of his as England manager but to be fair International footballs a completely different ball game. However, I do believe that he is an exceptional club manager and I look forward to him establishing us in the Premier League once again.

We have never had a manager who has even achieved a fraction of what Sven has. He was respected by all Man City fans and has excellent contacts worldwide, I never thought we had any chance of getting Sven. The players will have huge respect for him and I bet they can't wait to play for him.

For an old, balding, bespectacled geezer who looks worrying like Mr Burns, he's acheived a lot of good sex.

Seriously though, I'm pretty sure this is all going to go quite fvcking badly but it don't think you can question him on his acheivements seeing as most the jokers we're usually linked with have fifth round of the FA CUP and 16th in the premiership taking pride of place on their CV.

I cannot quite believe that any Leicester fan thinks this is a bad appointment.

We have continuously moaned over the years about the lack of ambition at the club and yet here we are with new investors looking to appoint the most succesful England manager in recent history, a manager that Chelsea couldnt prise away from the FA, a man who showed a huge amount of integrity at Notts County by not only working for free for 6 months but also didn't pursue the settlement of his £2.5m contract as he didnt want to see the club go under, who Man City fans screamed blue murder when dismissed and yet there are still people moaning??

He likes a challenge. He's got more than one style of play. He has contacts around the world with regards to player transfers and his coaching techniques are second to none.

The last two times we appointed a manager were before the League 1 Season where the shortlist were Nigel Pearson, John Gregory and Nigel Worthington, last time they were Sousa, Ian Dowie and Chris Coleman.

WHAT THE HELL DO YOU PEOPLE WANT!!!

I couldn't agree more with Bettso .... Leicester fans seem to seek out things to moan about. Personally I'd have given PS more time as i think he'd have turned things around .... but in terms of dream managerial appointments I don't think they get more fantastic than this one ..... to be hearing the shortlist of MON and Sven yesterday was sublime ..... I'm actually surprised Sven wasn't the new Villa manager...... we are taking on (in my opinion) one of the top managers in the country - certainly would make my top five current UK based managers .... but we are 44th (or thereabouts) in the league system .... that shows ambition and everything that i've wanted for decades.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!

And the chant mentioned in another thread "Sven you're smiling" ...... I'd love this to take off - It's brilliant!!!

Why do people care about nationality? It's a joke, I want the best person for the job, even if that is someone from mars. fook Nationalities!

Posted

can i put it this way... you ask why sven?

if you think you could actually say that about a certain mr o'neill !!! look how he is god status here. now sven has proven his worth at many a club and i think that is what city have never been able to do with any manager we have had. if they have the credentials you go for it and i for 1 will be in full voice and backing him all the way.
