Sven-Goran Erikkson hints at more loan signings

From the Merc

Sven-Goran Eriksson says he is in talks with more potential loan signings and is hopeful a deal can be done this week.

City started the 2-0 victory at Barnsley with four loan players in the starting line-up, all in the back four, but the City boss said he is still looking to strengthen.

Eriksson would not reveal the areas he was hoping to bolster, and said a lot would depend on the role of the players' agent in negotiations this week.

"We are talking and we will see if it will happen or not," he said.

Eriksson is looking to help his squad continue the momentum from back-to-back victories over Preston and Barnsley, and he expressed his delight at City's performance in their 2-0 win at Oakwell on Saturday.

City face Sheffield United on Wednesday and Derby next Saturday, with both games at the Walkers Stadium, and Eriksson said his side were growing in confidence.

"We are getting better and better," he said. "I think it was a good performance at Barnsley and I am very happy. I am proud of the players. We defended well and got a clean sheet again, our second in a row, so we are happy about that.

"I think we were in control, maybe not for 90 minutes, because Barnsley had a few half-chances in the second half. But I think we deserved to win and in the first half we were more or less in control of everything.

"They are getting more confident and keeping a clean sheet again is good for everyone, not just for the goalkeeper and defenders.

"We competed for the second balls very well, which was a problem at Swansea, and we did everything with a big heart.

"We played good football as well. We kept the ball and there were good combinations. We are going in the right direction.

"I hope so but, in football, if you feel like you can have an easy game, then you lose. I hope we can keep up the good spirit and the way we are working and keep that spirit for the next game, because every game in this league is very difficult."

I'm not sure how he plans to use them but with a loanee back four he can only have one more in the squad :dunno:

True, unless the loan signing(s) were from abroad.

Also, Vitor doesn't count as part of the allowed 5 either as far as i'm aware.

Perhaps he's making plans incase Davies isn't allowed to extend his stay with us.

I think we'll see a striker come in on loan and maybe Rensing and Pires if we can tie those deals up. I'd be happy with that until January.

We can't sign anyone from abroad on loan or permanent until January, unless they currently don't have a club ala Rensing, Pires etc.

Ah, fair enough.

There was a whole debate on this in another topic as to whether 'foreigners' count as part of the loanees, I'm not sure what the conclusion was. Ric are you saying that they are not allowed at all in this loanee window irrespective of whether they are counted as part of the 5?

true but it means that Vitor doesn't count the limit is on domestic loans

I am pretty sure that once August 31st is out of the way, only domestic players can be signed on emergency loan until January. Unattached players can be signed from home and abroad though.

Correct. So technically we can sign 2 more on loan and have them in our matchday squad.

Isn't the "emergency" aspect of these loans a bit of a farce i.e there doesn't have to be an emergency at all

And if you miss the 31st August transfer deadline you're able to take a player on an "emergency" loan and agree to sign them in January aren't you?

Thereby making the transfer window also a bit of a farce

Well it is isn't even without the loanee option.Fair enough with a restriction towards the end of the season but I don't really see what purpose it serves during the season it's not as if clubs are unaffected by it when it's closed as players are still touted around and tapped up.

Thanks for the clarification it certainly sounds right.

Agreed. All in all it's aload of old cock

My understanding is that you are only allowed 5 loanees in your match day squad. Vitor does count in this way but doesn't count on the limit of how many loanees you can have in a season.

Not sure how realistic it would be, but I'd love us to bring Pablo Barrera in from West Ham, even if it's only for a month.

He's not really getting a look in at the moment, we could give him some games to help acclimatise to playing in England whilst getting a very decent, tricky and pacey winger into the bargain. Sven will know him from his time with Mexico.

Assistant manager Derek Fazackerley is confident Leicester City will strengthen their squad before the emergency loan transfer window shuts next week.

City were close to signing West Bromwich Albion striker Ishmael Miller on loan before he picked up a thigh injury, but Miller has returned to training and City may renew their interest before Thursday's deadline.

City were also linked with a move for Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Chris Kirkland yesterday but, while Fazackerley would not comment on specific targets, he did say they were looking to add to the squad early next week.

"There will be one or two names bandied about over the next week before the loan window shuts," he said.

"I don't want to speculate too much about players from other clubs. Obviously, Ishmael has been one of the names linked with us, but I don't want to say too much until something has actually been done.

"I think there is a strong possibility we will strengthen, but so much can happen.

"We have another weekend of games, so injuries to certain players at certain clubs may prevent that from happening.

"We will see at the beginning of next week."

Fazackerley said manager Sven-Goran Eriksson had not yet made a decision over the three trialists currently training with the squad.

Cameroon keeper Joslain Mayebi, Greek midfielder Ilias Kyriakidis and Benin striker Razak Omotoyossi all impressed in the reserves earlier this week, and Fazackerley said they may get another chance in a game next week.

"They have all done very well this week," he said. "It has been a difficult week for them to come into a new environment and try to impress.

"Obviously, it gives us a chance to assess them against the players we already have within the club, and see where we go from there.

"There is a possibility to have a look at them in another game because we are trying to set up another reserve game towards the end of next week."
