Club statement.

Following the headline grabbing FA Cup 3rd round win over Newcastle United this evening, Stevenage officials were dismayed to learn of the assault on full back Scot Laird, after the final whistle had gone. Chairman Phil Wallace has issued this statement this evening

"I wasn't aware of the assault on Scott until long after the game. When I was told I spent a considerable time viewing the incident from all angles in the ESPN mobile unit with representatives of the Police. The footage the police now have is comprehensive and the assailant can be seen clearly and full on from the moment he enters the pitch. He's run on from the East terrace, holding a red and white scarf - the kind that was being sold outside the ground by local traders before the game. He has approached at least 3 Stevenage players, seeming to wait for an opportunity and then, on his way back, has leaned over a group of Stevenage fans celebrating with Scotty and thrown a punch to the side of the head that was designed to inflict maximum damage. Scotty collapsed unconscious and has no recollection of the incident.

"The assailant then continued his run back to the East terrace waving his scarf to disguise his actions and, according to witnesses, was pulled over the fence by one or more accomplices and fled out of the open exit gates. This person seemed intent on making a random assault on a Stevenage player, after a fantastic victory. This is disgraceful behaviour and we will do everything we can to ensure that the assailant is brought to justice and prosecuted. Recognition should not be difficult as the video images of him are crystal clear. This needs to be dealt with quickly and forcibly - not by football because clubs cannot stop someone setting out to with devious intent to inflict harm - but by the law, in that the guilty person should be shown no leniency. This time it was a fist - who knows what it could be next time. We do everything we can as a club to prevent this type of incident, following all the recommended procedures, but it seems this lad has set out to disguise his intent so that he can cause physical harm to one of our players and we will work with the Police tirelessly until this person is identified and prosecuted.

Hope the muppet gets caught.

Rumours doing the rounds as the the motive have varied from "he wouldn't give him his shirt after the game" to "the player was shagging his missus".

Utterly bizarre. Weird fans are Stevenage.

reading that statement then hopefully sounds like they got enough decent footage of him to make an id.. hope he gets locked up..

imagine they will get tougher on pitch invasions again now also..

I had assumed it was a disgruntled Toon when I saw it on TV, but I'm guessing there could be ulterior motive from a home fan, like those FB said.

It was all over a girl!

They get in the way of everything don't they

Oh, and the throwing of a burger, apparently!

What struck me most was the following bit:

Magistrates were also told that in 2005 Fitzgerald had been jailed for six-and-a-half years for inflicting grievous bodily harm. He was released from prison in 2008.

So he's been in trouble with the law before, gets sentenced, then released for good conduct (I suppose). Doesn't appear to do anything wrong.

Two years later, he can't help himself hitting a guy who used to go out with his current girlfriend just because he didn't "treat her right".

And the whole game starts anew...

From the BBC - http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=70249&st=0&p=1768393&hl=stevenage&fromsearch=1entry1768393

A man who ran on to the pitch after an FA Cup game and punched a Stevenage player has been jailed for 12 weeks and given a six-year ban from grounds.

Robert Fitzgerald, 24, was caught by TV cameras hitting defender Scott Laird at the end of the 3-1 win against Newcastle United on 8 January.

Magistrates in Stevenage heard Fitzgerald's girlfriend had previously been in a relationship with Mr Laird.

Fitzgerald, of Colts Corner, Stevenage, admitted common assault.

In his defence he said Mr Laird had "not treated his former girlfriend correctly".

Fitzgerald also pleaded guilty to entering the field without lawful authority.

Stevenage Magistrates also fined him £100.

The guy's an absolute scrote and his bird looks like a right superficial, plastic muntbag. Compared to his previous though, he'll be absolutely loving this, right walk in the park for him.

Bloke should have picked his moment a little better.

lol Yeah he couldn't have picked a worse time than live on TV!

12 weeks is a ridiculously leniant sentence, especially with previous.

He only chinned someone.

Happens in every town centre every weekend a hundred times over, and for all we know the bloke may have deserved a lamping.

Yes it happens all the time and wasn't really serious (although it could easily have been) but I do think it deserved a harsher sentence to send out a message that you can't just run onto a football pitch and spark players, even if it is personal. It would of been at least 10 months if I was the judge!

It's like pulling your pants down and having a crap inside McDonalds at The Shires on a Saturday afternoon - there are a fair few folk there who don't want or need to see it, and the H&S issues are off the scale. Should of done it down the park or maybe a kebab shop at 2am if he really felt the need.

12 weeks - nothing.

The sentances are ridiculas. Whats the point of them because a person gets next to nothing when doing something bad.

Wish I was King.
