Ozwin Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 How did it go? I remember wishing you well and hoping to see some pictures and whatnot when you returned. It's something I really want to do some day and I just wanted to know how it went really.
Finnegan Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 He was attacked by mutant cyborgs half way up. The James we got back is an alien infiltrator of the Illuminati. [/Empty.]
James. Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 Yeah it was me. By far the best and hardest thing I've ever done - I would recommend it to anyone. In fact I enjoyed it so much I'm off to Ecuador in July to climb some more mountains. Here's some photos - let me know who you are and I'll add you on Facebook so you can see more if you want. Looking out the plane window on the flight to Kilimanjaro airport: The guides - quality blokes: Morning at our second camp: Above the clouds with Mount Meru in the background: Fucked up plant life higher up the mountain: Battling to the summit: Summit photo ruined by gay leg syndrome: Descending with the clouds rolling in:
Samilktray Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 Do you have to climb all the way back down!?
Finnegan Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 Do you have to climb all the way back down!? Not if you pay a local to carry you.
Samilktray Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 Not if you pay a local to carry you. Thought there would be an escalator or something.
Finnegan Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 Yeah, they built one right across the city in Hong Kong. Them Africans just being lazy.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 How did you come to do it? Did you join a pre-existing exhibition or something? I'd love to do something like that. It looks very rewarding.

Did it with Charity Challenge . Found out about it through work - one of the charities my company were sponsoring had a couple of places so I thought fuck it why not. Raised 2k for charity in the process. So yes it is very rewarding especially when you're raising money as well. If you don't want to do it for charity then Jagged Globe are meant to be a good outfit. That's who I'm going to Ecuador with in July.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 Would you say it was easier or harder than Catbells?
Ozwin Posted 11 January 2011 Author Posted 11 January 2011 Some of those pictures are amazing, what time of year did you go? I've decided it's something I'm definitely going to do someday but I wouldn't want to go and it be cloudy and miserable all around, I want to take some good pictures like you did and properly enjoy it.
MikeyT Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 Those photos look amazing mate. Cheers for sharing them. What an awesome experience that must have been.

I went in February last year. Thing is it's a mountain and a high one at that so the weather is always very unpredictable. There are two main seasons for climbing though which are December - February and July - September. I think the start of the year is generally drier but colder (it was -25 on summit night). We had a bit of rain and it was completely cloudy on summit day but apart from that the weather was pretty good. Have a look at this link on the Jagged Globe website - this is the route I did - Lemosho Route on Kilimanjaro with Jagged Globe It is genuinely the experience of a lifetime. If you have the cash (you need to buy a lot of specialist clothing and other stuff as well as pay for the trip) and the motivation (you need to be determined and in decent shape to be able to enjoy it) then do it.
BoneDog Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 Looks like a nice trip and adventure. Ecuador sounds like a great place to go climbing and exploring too so should be awesome. Pretty jealous! That picture of the exotic plants reminded me of a book I read about Von Humboldt and his expeditions around the mountains of South America - awe inspiring stuff
Daggers Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 Would you say it was easier or harder than Catbells?
SystonFox Posted 11 January 2011 Posted 11 January 2011 I did the three peaks in 09 and am gonna probably do it again this year. That pales into insignificance when you look at mt. Kili. Bonus is my sis is moving to tanzanier for a year so I may get a chance at it
Ozwin Posted 11 January 2011 Author Posted 11 January 2011 Did you go with someone you know? I know there's a pic there of you with a lady person but you could have met her there like. That's one obstacle that'd put me off doing it, I don't know anyone who'd be willing to spend that much on climbing a mountain you know? It's probably a bit weird going on your own. How much did it set you back if you don't mind me asking ?
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 12 January 2011 Posted 12 January 2011 You're not a man 'til you've conquered Old John down Bradgate Park. That's a mission that seperates the men from the boys.

How much did it set you back if you don't mind me asking ? I did a short 10 day Safari thru Africa in June and out of 20 people 8 people were on there own, those 8 just paired up and shared a tent with someone. I actually went on this part of the my trip with my brother but spent most of my time with other people on the tour. I even went to Ireland and stayed at one of the girls house i met on the tour. I also did all of Europe on my own for 5 months and it is the best thing ever cos it forces you to meet people and be more sociable. Some of the people i meet overseas i consider my best mates now and speak to them all the time. I would meet people doing tours or at Backpackers and then you just stick with them until you branch off to a new city. I am actually meeting up with 4 people i did Europe with this weekend, 2 of which are flying down from Sydney to stay with me. I'm also planning to do a month around Asia at the end of this year with an Aussie Girl who i did a tour around Europe with. So don't let going alone hold you back most people especially people doing tours will be alone, I was apprenhensive at the start but that all goes away. When your sitting at a bar in some random country knocking back cheap local beers having a laugh with people you've just meet.
James. Posted 12 January 2011 Posted 12 January 2011 Catbells... haha. I had to Google that. Soccerroo is right, there's absolutely nothing wrong with doing it on your own. There were 26 people in our group including the British guide and the doctor (and then another 90, yes 90, support staff - porters, guides, cooks, etc). Quite a few of those 26 were on their own. We had a quality time as a group though, everyone got along and no one felt excluded or lonely. In terms of cost the trip was about £2,500. Some people fund raised that but we just paid out our own pocket so all the money we raised went to charity. Extra costs such as clothing and all that probably came to about £1,000.
Zingari Posted 12 January 2011 Posted 12 January 2011 Summit photo ruined by gay leg syndrome: looks a fantastic experience
Ozwin Posted 12 January 2011 Author Posted 12 January 2011 Sigh, just realised I spelt Kilimanjaro wrong in the title. That's what staying up til 4am on here does to you. <_< But yeah, cheers for that. Looks really fun, if a bit pricey haha, a bit more than I was expecting tbh. Might have to start saving the pennies. Like you say though, it looks like one of those things that you become addicted to, I've never been abroad before so I have this massive urge to go see what's out there sort of thing, I watched UP (the pixar film) the same night I made this topic and it really made me want to visit Angel Falls, then there's that 'amazing sights' topic on here which opens your eyes to what's out there. Shame it costs so bleedin' much to go anywhere.
