stockyfox Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 Rooney's goal yesterday may possibly rank as one of the most spectacular goals ever, but for me, the goal that will always rank as being number one - the 'Goal of the Century?' - for sheer brilliance, speed, skill, clinical accuracy and was truly 'out-of-this-world' was scored against Leicester at Filbert Street on April 16th 1963 (Easter Tuesday) by Denis Law for Manchester United. It went like a bullet into the net and not even the World's number one goalie - Gordon Banks - had a glimmer of hope in stopping it. I don't think there is a visual record of it but if anyone knows of one, then a direct comparison of the 2 goals could be more conclusive. It is described in 'Of Fossils and Foxes' (page 97) as 'a miraculous bicycle kick' and I know I'm going back 47+ years, but even so, I would still place the supreme excellence of Law's goal above that by Rooney. And the match itself has passed into Leicester folklore, not just because Leicester won 4-3 but for the fact that Ken Keyworth scored a hat-trick.......in six minutes!!! I would be interested to hear the thoughts and recollections of any other fans that were there that day, and especially if you were behind the goal at the Double-decker end!

funkyrobot Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 The best goal at filbert street has to be akinbiyi's goal at the family stand end. Bounced it on off his arse or somet from all of 3 yards. Sheer class. That goal was well worth the millions of pounds we spent on him. Probably
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 What about Joey from the half way line?
acooling08 Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 This thread is going off track. There are many existing threads discussing the best ever goals so post about them there. I'm interested about this wonder goal but I doubt that there are more than a handful of people on this site that were even supporters at the time. On an equally off topic note: Muzzy's overhead kick > Rooney's
Zingari Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 Yakubu's goal yesterday was better than Law's or Rooney's I was at the 63 game, but in the popular side toward the filbert street end .
davieG Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 I was there but locked outside so had to be content with listening to the atmosphere and the info people on the outside walls were passing on to us poor buggers outside.
dave_the_fox Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 What about Joey from the half way line? What about Muz!?
acooling08 Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 What about Muz!? As I said earlier, Rooney's is nothing next to this.
Fox92 Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 Gillespie's goal away at Upton Park when he hit a volley from about 30 yards was better I don't think the ball touched the ground. Walker > Dublin? (was it?) > Gillespie > Screamer!!

I would be interested to hear the thoughts and recollections of any other fans that were there that day, and especially if you were behind the goal at the Double-decker end! I saw that goal and it was as spectacular as you describe. It was the talk of the town for months - as was our beating such an illustrious United team and with a bit of style as well. Better than Rooney's? No question. Law was known as something of an overhead kick specialist and not least because he could leap so far off the ground. Whether to rate it as goal of the century is so subjective. How do you compare different types of individual goals with team goals? Frank Worthington once flicked the ball over his marker 35 yards out and volleyed the ball home before it touched the ground. Le Tissier scored spectacular goals week in week out and, more recently, some of Bergkamp's were pretty special. To decide the best seems ridiculous because what criteria do you use?
BoneDog Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 Jamie Pollock's 30 yard volley for Middlesbrough at the Kop end was pretty special in April 1992. I was stood behind the goal and it was a screamer.
Thracian Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 As I said earlier, Rooney's is nothing next to this. That's definitely a better goal than Rooney's. Law's was slightly further out and went in faster and flatter if memory serves, which it doesn't always! ;
Jakemoore Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 As I said earlier, Rooney's is nothing next to this. Agreed. Nalis against Leeds awesome
milsey Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 i know this goal wasnt at home but i gotta give a mention to muzzy izzets overhead kick against grimsby!!! sheer brilliance. If only glenn hoddle would of picked him for england before he decided he was turkish!!
Sk4 Posted 13 February 2011 Posted 13 February 2011 For me I have to say the birches goal against Leeds back in about 1975 ish takes some beating
smallpauldj Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Gary Coatsworths vs Luton has to be the only shot ive seen hit plumb centre of the goal from distance and still beat the keeper by pure power. oh the memory's
Ultra Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 A volley by Keith Weller vs Newcastle in 1975 still lives in my memory to this day. Other screamers at the Filbert Street end include Steve Claridge's goal v. Manyoo in 1996 and Collymore's first vs Sunderland in 2000.
Christopher Gamble Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 I was in the Double Decker behind the goal...was carried over turnstile on my Dad's shoulders and then pushed down the front and saw that Denis Law bycicle kick goal and all the Man U stars....was there when we lost 0 5 in 1965 too but can't really remeber that as well as was only 7 years old but remberb Besty...amazing times...City had a great side then but Man U were something else...is this game on video anywhere?
grahamep Posted 28 July 2012 Posted 28 July 2012 I'm afraid the old memory is faiding now, but I can remember Denis's goal as if it were yesterday. I was standing on top of this derelict bar at the right hand side of the kop, right at the back. It was either Johnny Giles or Albert Quixall that whipped the ball over from the right hand side. Denis of course had his back to the goal, probably halfway between the penalty spot and the edge of the box. What happened next was sheer brilliance, he just took off and scissor kicked the ball past a bewildered Banksy into the back of the net. I honestly don't think anybody had seen the like of it anywhere before in the country. Brilliant! In the 5-0 defeat Denis was the only United forward not to score that day. For some reason United that day played in all white. In the kick about prior to the game a dog ran onto the pitch and Banksy caught it. Some may say that was the only save he made that day. Tee-Hee
PAULCFC Posted 29 July 2012 Posted 29 July 2012 The Preston goalie who scored against Pressman a few years ago......doubt i'll ever see that again.
