jonthefox Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 I thought it was quite good. I tried to imagine it happening today to realise the impact it would have had. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b010tb6z/United/
rico Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 Sky+d it,will watch it later, its on the BBC Iplayer too i think!
MC Prussian Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 It was filmed very nicely, the film captured the mood and feel of the era pretty well (excellent job by wardrobe and art dept) .... Yet something was still missing.
MikeyT Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 Cheers for posting this. Looks very interesting! Muchos appreciated.
davieG Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 Sir Matt Busby's son 'disgusted' at United TV film http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-13181651

MC Prussian Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 I can understand him being upset, but when his chief arguement is the choice of clothes i think its just a case of sour grapes he wasnt consulted. But he does have a point about the narrative. I know it's hard to go in-depth with a TV movie time slot of 90 minutes, but it's probably what I was missing as well... The movie omitted a lot of the other players' stories, it didn't (or couldn't) go deep enough. In the end, it felt a bit unfinished in that regard.
Mee Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 Extremely well filmed, such a tragedy. Defiantly worth a watch.
eaststandtom Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 an absolute must for true football fans and real united fans everywhere. all the glory hunter united fans can learn something real about the club and why it is the force it is today from watching it. there was a great line david tennant said about how they acted now (in reaction to the disaster) would shape how they would be viewed in the future. perfect
Guest Bilo Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 Beautifully filmed and some great performances, David Tennant in particular was outstanding as Jimmy Murphy who's now a rather forgotten part of Manchester United's history despite being one of the chief architects of the Busby Babes. Unfortunately there does seem to have been some omissions and I can see why some families would have been upset by the focus on Duncan Edwards and Bobby Charlton, though the portrayal of the latter's battle with the dilemma of whether or not to return to football was brilliantly done. Overall I'd argue it was a success, with sucn an emotive subject even 52 years later it's going to be impossible to please everyone.
Dilkes Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 I thought it was brilliant! Another one to watch is the Bobby Moore programme on BBC on Thursday at 9 I think.
ajthefox Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 Watched it last night and found it very interesting, well worth watching. Sadly I'm sure there will be all too few of the plastic united fans of today actually tuning in
Cat Burger Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 It seems like it's been written using Bobby Charlton's memoir, although not sure this has been made explicit.

Winchester Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 Half way through watching it now. Thoughts so far: Busby's accent sounds odd, almost russian. The football league man seems to have been cast as the insensitive blundering bureaucrat. Whether that's an accurate portrayal or not, I don't know.

It is apparently true that he was VERY opposed to English clubs taking part in European competition. He said it was 'too full of wogs and dagoes.' Nice bloke. Know what you mean about Busby's accent though, sounded more Moscow than Glasgow.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 27 April 2011 Posted 27 April 2011 Extremely well filmed, such a tragedy. Defiantly worth a watch. agreed
stripeyfox Posted 27 April 2011 Posted 27 April 2011 i enjoyed it. Whether it was strictly accurate in every detail, I don't know but it was entertaining and I think the focus on the young Bobby Charlton and the grief of losing his friends was so very personal to him and yet by contrast it was a very public tragedy. If one thinks about the legacy that Duncan Edwards has, and then to starkly consider he was just 21 when he was killed in the crash. Liked the portrayed of the Irish goalkeeper as well.
Dilkes Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 Heres me thinking it was charlton. Just testing, see who actually reads my comments Yeah it was my mistake, my bad
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 Know what you mean about Busby's accent though, sounded more Moscow than Glasgow. To be honest, I think Dougray Scott, born in Fife, is quite aware of what a Scottish accent sounds like!
Guest Bilo Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 Fair point but the accent sounded unusual to say the least. Still acted well though.
Dilkes Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 Also I loved it when Jimmy Murphy said to Duncan Edwards (I think, not sure) "Never mind England, you're almost good enough for Wales"
MikeyT Posted 30 April 2011 Posted 30 April 2011 Just downloaded it and am 15 minutes in. Did just find this before i started watching. http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnews/sport/football/manchester_united/s/1418973_tarnishing-the-busby-memory EDIT: Ok just finished watching it and not a bad film. Some nice performances and i thought the directing was very good also. Only thing i would query is, Dougray Scotts performance. I wasn't really feeling it. Seemed a bit forced to me.
