THFC6061 Posted 25 June 2011 Posted 25 June 2011 The 43rd Copa America starts in Argentina on 1st July and runs until 24th July. 12 teams will participate, the 10 regular South American nations and Costa Rica and Mexico as guests. Japan were due to participate but withdrew after the Tsunami earlier this year. The Copa America used to be called the South American Championship and has run since 1916, making it one of the oldest international football competitions in the world. Uruguay and Argentina have both won the competition 14 times, with Brazil in third place with 8 wins. Paraguay and Peru have both been Champions twice and Colombia and Bolivia have both won the competition once each.
AjcW Posted 25 June 2011 Posted 25 June 2011 Always good.Annoying hours though! On ESPN this year, nabbed it from sky

Ford Super Sunday Posted 25 June 2011 Posted 25 June 2011 if Sky lose something to ESPN it generally mean Sky don't want it they are some crazy fans in Agrentina though saw all those River Plate fans rioting the other day Not necessarily that they didn't want it, but it's in Sky's best interests to let ESPN have content that will help keep its subscriber numbers up. So they'll let the odd thing slide, like the Copa America, to keep their interest in the summer months. Looking forward to it though, gives me a chance to watch it, especially the games kicking off at like 8pm. the 1:45am ones are to be recorded. The whole CONEMBOL qualifying should be interesting for the next World Cup. With Brazil already qualified, it means we should see another South American team aside from the usua; suspects qualifying for 2014. This could go some way to showing us who it is. Also Brazil's only competitive set of matches in the run up to 2014, so it's in their interests to impress. (Confederations Cup 2013 is questionable, but as it's being held in Brazil they'll definitely take that as seriously as possible).
AjcW Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 Brazil 0-0 Venezuela. Disappointing start for Brazil to say the least!
Jordan Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 Brazil played like they had no strategy and as if their training consists solely of the coaches throwing a few balls out there and letting the players do whatever they want for a few hours. They were woefully disorganized. Venezuela did a great job holding firm at the top of the box, but Brazil tried to play with their backs to goal inside the box--far too deep.
accessory Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 With both Lucas and Ramires in their midfield, maybe it's not too surprising.. Then again, Argentina only drew their first game against Bolivia. Perhaps this will be more open than recent Copa America tournaments.
AjcW Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 And going against what I said earlier.... the hours of play are actually reasonable!!
Jordan Posted 4 July 2011 Posted 4 July 2011 With both Lucas and Ramires in their midfield, maybe it's not too surprising.. Then again, Argentina only drew their first game against Bolivia. Perhaps this will be more open than recent Copa America tournaments. Open as in competitiveness? Possibly. Open as in free-flowing, high-scoring play, not so much. Then again, the tournament is only 3 days old. Teams usually play more cagey in the first game. Paraguay vs Ecuador was another two hours of my life I will never have back. I've been talking to a few Ecuadorians about their team, and to a man they either want their team to go on a crazy run (of course) or get knocked out miserably in the group stage (so they can fire their manager, whom the fans hate, before World Cup qualifying). I'm really interested to see how Mexico fares, so soon after their Gold Cup win. This could be a memorable summer for El Tri.
purpleronnie Posted 4 July 2011 Posted 4 July 2011 Jordan, what do you think of how the mexico fans behaved during the recent game between the US.
Amin Posted 4 July 2011 Posted 4 July 2011 Brazil played like they had no strategy and as if their training consists solely of the coaches throwing a few balls out there and letting the players do whatever they want for a few hours. They were woefully disorganized. Venezuela did a great job holding firm at the top of the box, but Brazil tried to play with their backs to goal inside the box--far too deep. They looked like they were having a kick about down the park, and the praise Neymar was getting in the second half on the stream I was watching was crazy.
Jordan Posted 4 July 2011 Posted 4 July 2011 Jordan, what do you think of how the mexico fans behaved during the recent game between the US. There were a lot of Mexican fans acting like dicks, but since that matter is both a complex one and off topic, that's neither here nor there.
HEGGSY Posted 6 July 2011 Posted 6 July 2011 Argentina playing Columbia tonight should be a good game but at 1.45am ko I can't see myself watching it
Jordan Posted 7 July 2011 Posted 7 July 2011 Just kicked off at the fairly reasonable time of 8:45 pm local time; nice. Been watching the games on Spanish-language television, unintentionally funny stuff.
AjcW Posted 16 July 2011 Posted 16 July 2011 In fairness, its been a spectacularly dull tournament..... However Uruguay 1-0 inside 5 minutes against Argentina in the second quarter final, looks like it could be a cracker!
accessory Posted 17 July 2011 Posted 17 July 2011 Uruguay through 5-4 on penalties. Argentina will be devastated. I wouldn't be surprised if their coach is sacked over this.
accessory Posted 17 July 2011 Posted 17 July 2011 Can't deny Uruguay were effective last night, but they're not the easiest of teams to watch. Basically they parked the bus last night for long spells, with the occasional hoof to Forlan and Suarez. Judging by his antics last night (and his indulgence by the referee) Suarez is going to irritate the hell out of a lot of Premier League fans next season.
Guest MattP Posted 17 July 2011 Posted 17 July 2011 incredible wasnt it? The spot was bad but no excuse for the scale of the misses. Venezuela winning as well.
MC Prussian Posted 20 July 2011 Posted 20 July 2011 URUGUAY!!! 2-0 against Peru in their semifinal. C'mon!!!
Guest MattP Posted 20 July 2011 Posted 20 July 2011 Strong faves Uruguay, Suarez is developing into one of the top 3-4 strikers in the world. Would love to see Venezuela win tonight.
Stadt Posted 20 July 2011 Posted 20 July 2011 URUGUAY!!! 2-0 against Peru in their semifinal. C'mon!!! He's that crazy about Uruguay he's wearing a Spain Shirt!
