New Captain: Matt Mills

I'd like to know how many Reading games everyone who says he is a "born leader" etc etc have seen.

From the way so many seem to be saying this or at least that he should be Captain it seems like everyone has seen him play no end.

He might well be a great captain but for me this move is wrong on principle. You don't let someone waltz into the side and pick up the armband, they have to earn it. Mills hasn't.

Massively agree with that. There's no doubting he's a top player, but I'd much prefer our captain to be someone who knows the fans and club, like Kingy or Wellens. I won't complain though, the spirit in the squad seems fantastic! I loved the passion we showed today.

Richie Wellens is expected to be confirmed as Leicester City captain.

The midfield star is the favourite to be handed the captain’s armband for the season opener at Coventry City this lunchtime after leading the side against Valencia and Real Madrid in the last two pre-season games.

While Wellens did not want to comment on the likelihood of officially becoming Sven-Goran Eriksson’s captain, he said it is a role every player should relish.

“It would be disrespectful to others who have been the captain before to comment on that because we don’t know yet who the captain will be,” said Wellens, 31. “It is the manager’s decision on that.

“But it is a massive club and one of the biggest in the Championship. We have the financial backing and, when you look at the whole package, we probably should be a Premier League club.

“To be captain of that, for any player, should be an honour.”

Eriksson said he had decided on his on-field lieutenant, but would not reveal his identity. He did say, though, that it was a key appointment as his side look to mount a promotion push.

Matt Oakley and Andy King were City’s captains last season and new arrival Matt Mills wore the armband during pre-season in Austria against Bursaspor.

“I have more or less decided, but I won’t say until Saturday,” Eriksson said.

“We have some good contenders. We have Oakley and we have Andy King, who were captains last season. We have Richie Wellens who can do it and Matt Mills can do it. We have a lot of players who can do it.

“It is an important appointment. It is good that the captain can be a good communicator on the pitch, that he can talk but also talk constructively, not moaning about everything.

“It must be a voice the other players will listen to. If not, then it is not good.

“It is important that I can communicate well with him as well. He will be the voice of the players as well.

“But today you have seniority in the club so when issues come up we talk about it.”

Interesting.... I hope I don't get this wrong.

It seems Sven think it's too much "issues" before(before Mills became captain) when we had seniority in the club.

I reckon Mills will be the players "spokesperson" so every "issue" will be dealt within the players before it goes up in the organisation.......

I always feel that some players are vocal, but when they get the armband they don't look vocal again. For example, Wellens was captain against Real Madrid but I didn't notice much vocalness (is that a word?) from him, but he wasn't captain against Coventry and he was vocal: I saw him have a right go at Peltier after he turned his back when we were defending a corner lol

Anyway, I'd rether see Wellens as captain but I'll support whoever as normal.

If this post doesn't convince anyone he is good enough to be captain then I guess nothing will ;)

The passion Mills and Danns showed for our club at Cov was miles ahead of anything we saw from anybody in our squad last season imo. Considering this was first game of the seaon these two were fantastic. Great assets to the club :scarf:

Why will you?

We have 6 decent players fighting for 3 places in the centre. Abe - Wellens - King - Fernandes - Danns - Johnson ...thats presuming we will be sticking with the current formation....There's bound to be loads of rotation and I just think over the coming season that others in that list will prove to be more beneficial as starters. If Wellens can up his consistency then no doubt I will be wrong and I don't mind if I am cus that means he will be performing better than some of the others....But if everyone's on top of their game then I think he might find it tricky. Fernandes looks class as a holding midfielder, Abe can run all day breaking up attacks, ideal for away games and I think that away from home especially, they could be first choice, Wellens is only other that could fill that role if rotating, and of course, he could play all 3 like on Saturday and then has the option of Danns on the right... otherwise that means 1 offensive midfielder from King Danns Johnson and Wellens, and I get the feeling Sven would go more with a box to box player on most occasions, especially once the team have more experience of playing together.. When at home then maybe we would play 2 attacking/creative midfielders and he will get more opportunity, or even as a holding player due to rotation. We have good options, that's the most important thing.

And this is just an opinion, I'm not a Wellen's hater and more than likely my summise will prove wrong....but you did ask ;)

And apologies that this is in the Matt Mills thread....hopefully no one will notice

Good selection by Sven. Just needs to calm his temper down when not happy about a ref's decision or disagreeing with players.

I don't think he talked more than the likes of Wellens. I thought he should have stepped in when Bamba was frustrated with the referee.

Might be because he has just joined the club or something like that. I expect him to be excellent over the season though, as he was for Reading.

ugh Wellens bumming
