Mahamadou Diarra

I am totally sure we were linked with someone like this, but it was under Sousa I think, or was it when Sven had just come? Anyway, I do recall us being linked with a bigger name, such as Mahamadou Diarra, because I was at college the next day and I recall saying to someone 'oh yeah, we've been linked with xxxx', and I am sure it was Diarra, you know. Can't remember though.

Anyway, where are Doncaster getting all of their money from for this, or is it just lazy rumours again? I saw in the media the other day, they have signed that Ilunga on loan from West Ham. However, I don't rate him anyway.

It was that Nigeria player that didn't get a work permit. Sani Kaita I think. He was the guy who got sent off in the world cup when they were beating Greece and then got death threats!

On paper it's a good idea, but will it actually help Doncaster? Surely it would cause major disruption in the players camp.

Says a Leicester supporter.

I bet not one of the Leicester players plays for the club for anything but the money. Possibly King excepted, as he's been here a while.

Difference being we pay the wages and are not bringing the players in just for a few games here and there....

Gives the players time to bond and enjoy being at the club

Very interesting. McKay is clearly a very shrewd man.

Three initial problems I have with the idea:

1) They'll have a team of individuals. Countless times over the years we've seen teams get promoted from this league (Watford, Blackpool etc) who don't have too many top players. A team of 11 guys all just waiting for their move are going to want to impress to earn a move but similarly they're not going to want to put their foot in and risk getting injured. The calibre of player they're looking to bring in is going to think that his CV will earn him a move somewhere anyway, without doing too much. Could have another Ramsey at Forest situation: players simply using it as an opportunity to get fit.

2) It's a two-year plan. What happens if Donny go down this year (very real possibility)? Yes, Mahamadou Diarra wants a move, but is he really prepared to play in League One? Would he really be willing to go to Hartlepool away on a Tuesday night just to keep his fitness ticking over until he never has to see such places ever again?! Especially when he can sit in sunny Madrid picking up the same money. I don't think so. Similarly, such doubts can be applied to places such as Hull, Burnley and Millwall in the Championship.

3) This is clearly a chairman/board initiative. There are very few managers out there who are willing to have players forced upon them. It's contradictory to what a manager is. Look at the players Mandaric forced upon his many managers, we only achieved success when he stopped all of that nonsense. It will be very hard to find a manager willing to put up with this, no matter how good the players might be. The constant disruption will be just too much.

Leaves a bit of a sour taste in the mouth that it's Doncaster too. A club that has punched above it's weight for so long but always done things the right way, playing good football and appreciative of where they were. I was surprised when they sacked O'Driscoll but this explains a lot. Seems a shame for them to completely swing the other way with such a short-termist plan of action...

It sounds a very interesting idea. certainly seems Doncaster are in a win/win situation. Will be very interesting to see how it pans out. It certainly doesn't bother me, as there is little or no loyalty involved in football these days anyway.
