For that price, you can't wrong, especially with the free credit as well. It has WiFi and Bluetooth etc, so its a very good deal.

Cheers

My phone is six or seven years old and I haven't even thought about getting a new one until recently, so I'm pretty much retarded when it comes to phones, so I'm hoping for some help from my fellow Foxes.

I want a proper pay as you go, as I'll sometimes use it quite a lot, and at other times pretty much never. I know there are pay as you go deals where you have to pay so much every month like a contract, and I want to avoid these, because I know that will be money down the drain a lot of the time.

I'd also like to escape a shafting for browsing the net for slightly too long. Is this a concern on pay as you go?

I want to spend up to around £100-£140 on the handset. Probably the Samsung Galaxy Ace, or something similar.

Which network do you recommend? Are there any to avoid?

Which phones would you recommend for that price? Which ones are shite value?

Remember, you're talking to someone who still uses a Sony Ericsson W810i in the year 2012. I went looking at newer mobiles... at the museum! rimshotdc9.gif What I'm getting at is, when it comes to phones, I am a total noob fag, so assume I know sweet fa.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Go on giffgaff network. £10 p/m for 250 mins, Unlimited texts and Internet. The sim works in O2 phones as giffgaff is part of O2.

As for the phone, take a look at this link.

I hope this helps :)

Giffgaff works like a contract but is payg. When you top up £10 the contract lasts for 30 days after that it runs out and then you top up the £10 again and so on.

I've set up a couple of Galaxy Aces at work and they seem alright for a lower/mid range phone, and there's a Galaxy Ace II now. Probably better than the Wildfire S, but this has been replaced by the Desire C now and I honestly don't know what that's like

Avoid the Samsung Galaxy Y (or 'Young' I think it's called). My girlfriend's mum has got one and although it runs the Android operating system, it looks like it's doing it on a Commodore 64. It's cheap, and you can't half tell

I know this might seem like a stupid question, but bear with me. With Giffgaff, do you have to top up each month? If so, I'm not sure about this, because currently, I can sometimes go for a long while without paying anything at all. Also, I'm assuming you can you add more credit if you need it.

I'd like to thank you both for your advice.

I'll be giving this some thought for a little while longer, so any more help from yourselves or anyone else would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Galaxy S3 > Iphone 5.

This is incontrovertible fact.

No faffing around with iTunes, no tying to computers, no having to jailbreak to personalise. And Android rocks.

Got a good deal with Orange for it too.

Giffgaff is great,

You can set it to automatically buy another goody bag, which is what I have done, a £10 goody bag every month gives me unlimited free data and texts, and 250 mins of calls.

This is on top of your credit, credit is there for everything but I don't really know whether they are competitive or not as I just have the Goody bag, but like wise with your goody bags you can set it to automatically top up when it drops below £2 so that you are never stuck without credit.

If you get a smart phone you will get addicted to using the internet functions and start caning the data streaming Leicester games, so a goody bag really is the way forwards, I laugh at all these people with data limits that worry about using it too much.

As for the actual handset, you just need to pick up an unlocked second hand one, an iPhone 4 is now a bargain, and if you have never had a smart phone before you will not notice it's lack of power or speed compared to the latest models, if you are going PAYG then you could end up forking out a lot for a smart phone and then on top of that for insurance etc, second hand iphone or HTC will be more than enough for your needs.

I was similar to you RD, I was still using the old school Sony ericcsson (about 6 years old) until a few months ago, bought a Sony Ericcson Xperia Arc S, just after the latest Sony had come out and the price had dropped, was still around £280 new though, but I love it, and things that would annoy an iPhone aficionado, or proper phone geek, are lost on me as I have never had a phone as good as this before.

I saw an iPhone 4 on eBay for £200 earlier. Bargain.

Cap Shraps explanation on giffgaff is spot on. I'm suprised so many people haven't taken advantage to be honest. Best network out in my opinion.

Everyone is tied into 18-24 month contracts, so it is not worth breaking the contract to switch to giff gaff

Thanks Cap Shrap.

I've taken yours and Heggsy's advice and ordered a Giffgaff sim.

Now I just need an unlocked phone. I've narrowed it down to a choice of two - the Samsung Galaxy Ace or the Nokia Lumia 710, which is a Windows phone. How does Windows compare to Android? The Nokia is a bit more expensive than the Samsung. Is it worth the extra few quid?

Does anyone know which is better? Maybe somebody knows the pros and cons of either?

Got a Nokia Lumia 710 on tuesday, which arrived much quicker than I was expecting. I can't use it yet, though, as the sim I ordered is still nowhere to be seen.

I ordered a giffgaff sim a week ago and it still hasn't shown up. To anyone else on giffgaff, how long did you have to wait for your sim?

3 weeks for my daughter to get hers. Not a good service but I guess demand is quite high

Came within a week for me, but it was a few months ago now, they may have supply issues, they do most of their communication through a forum at giffgaff.com might be worth checking on that and seeing if they have any announcements.
