cosmos Posted 19 October 2011 Posted 19 October 2011 Why do we have players on thousands of pounds a week who are unable to take a decent free kick or penalty? Sven and his coaching staff obviously see it as acceptable or it wouldn't still be happening after 11 games of the season. Sven's had a lot of games in charge now and i'm struggling to see why he's still here.
Finnegan Posted 19 October 2011 Posted 19 October 2011 King takes an alright penalty and there's evidence Gallagher, Abe and Konchesky can all hit a barn door. Not every team has a Juninho. Let's focus on scoring from open play first eh?
Nick Posted 19 October 2011 Posted 19 October 2011 Agreed. Long ball to runner, scramble in the area, or head of defender? Need more diverse open play. King takes an alright penalty and there's evidence Gallagher, Abe and Konchesky can all hit a barn door. Not every team has a Juninho. Let's focus on scoring from open play first eh?
Rhysm Posted 19 October 2011 Posted 19 October 2011 I think it was 6 out of 7 decent pens against Cardiff - some people are hard to please... As mentioned numerous times on here though I think the corners are dreadful and have been for a long time. We have two great headers of the ball in Bamba and Mills but feed them rubbish floated balls which they cant do anything with.
Fox92 Posted 19 October 2011 Posted 19 October 2011 Not every team has a player who will score every free kick. Not every team has a player who will score every penalty. I have seen evidence this season that Konchesky can strike a good free kick. Obviously Gallagher can, but I'd rather him not be in the first team. Abe is supposed to be decent at striking free kicks as well. Regarding penalties, we scored several good penalties this season against Cardiff City. Ok, Fernandes missed, but I doubt he will ever be in a position to take a penalty because he it isn't his game. In the past, we have seen Howard, Wellens, Abe, St. Ledger etc all score penalties. And other players are capable too, such as Konchesky, Vassell, Nugent and Beckford. Asking why the manager is still here because we don't score or hit the target with out penalties and free kicks is very strange in a way, in my opinion. If thats the case, then half of the managers in the league wouldn't have a job. Not every player can score free kicks and penalties, and we have all seen that even if you are the best player in the World, you still may not be very good at penalties and free kick's.
kam6 Posted 19 October 2011 Posted 19 October 2011 i think that the main thing is that we are not great on the dead ball situation. Free kicks float in and get cleared out or keepers hands or out of touch. Corners are shocking!! we do need to work on set plays more and start scoring goals from every which way! any way, 4-0 tonight!

Itsthejoeker Posted 19 October 2011 Posted 19 October 2011 why does everyone forgot Waghorn messed his penalty up too? I think he means in the FA Cup
Rhysm Posted 19 October 2011 Posted 19 October 2011 why does everyone forgot Waghorn messed his penalty up too? League cup - fernandes only miss

How many penalties have we missed I'm not sure but 1 out of 7 at cardiff ain;t bad. IMO your over reacting on that. But crosses from free kicks corners and open play are dire. And as I have said on other threads cost us sunday and unless sorted will cost us at the end of the season. For all the play we had we never put brum under pressure and never looked like scoring
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 19 October 2011 Posted 19 October 2011 I really do think that anyone could take a good free kick or corner if you just paractice, a lot. I was at Posh vs Cardiff yesterday, saw two great free kicks scored, and the corners created havoc at both ends, with balls cleared off the line a few times. I wonder why we cant do the same, it surely isnt that hard to get it right with a lot of work put into it.

Corky Posted 19 October 2011 Posted 19 October 2011 Sacking a manager due to poor corners and free-kicks? Interesting.
martyn Posted 19 October 2011 Posted 19 October 2011 Sacking a manager due to poor corners and free-kicks? Interesting. The ability to score goals from set pieces can win you a significant amount of valuable points every season. Just look at us under O'Neill. It is remiss of the management/coaching not to have overseen an improvement in our ability to exploit set pieces, even by means of attempting to work some clever routines. As it is our nothing, floaty corners and free kicks courtesy of Wellens/Danns/Konchesky et al are a complete waste.
