Swalker Posted 22 October 2011 Posted 22 October 2011 It looks like other people think the same as me. Howard is a game changer and shows passion (exactly what we lacked today). He can create opportunities for others (schlupp, king, dyer etc) and causes defenders nightmares. Personally, I would start him the next game. What are everybody elses opinions?

He can create opportunities for others (schlupp, king, dyer etc) and causes defenders nightmares. Personally, I would start him the next game. What are everybody elses opinions? Spot on. He's still got it at 34. Just need him to develop some youngsters into his style of play.
bettso Posted 22 October 2011 Posted 22 October 2011 We need a player like him but not actually him, If he'd have played today all that would have happened is we would have knocked it long and he would have given away a load of free kicks.
Guy Posted 22 October 2011 Posted 22 October 2011 Although Super Stevie Howard was more our game changing lynchpin under Pearson's reign in our league one league winning season and that majestic play offs Championship team the season after two years ago, he could still do a job. He's still only 34 (?) and when you consider Graham Alexander at Preston is 40 (and still doing as job!) then Howard should still be a major player for us. Not purist football perhaps but what's purist about the Championship! Worry about playing the beautiful passing game once in the Prem.!!
cc_star Posted 22 October 2011 Posted 22 October 2011 Always on the bench as he can come on & aid us mixing our game up if we're losing or help us retain posession if we're hanging on. Although he's worth 10 Beckfords so who knows
acooling08 Posted 22 October 2011 Posted 22 October 2011 Howard is exactly the type of player we need against WHU. Passionate and a physical presence upfront.
Swalker Posted 22 October 2011 Author Posted 22 October 2011 He's passionate, I would say he puts more than his foot in and scares defenders. Exactly what we needed today. Just like it's been said when he plays we tend to play long ball up to him. We should just play our football as normal and then mix it up with a few long balls, crosses etc. Howard still pulls defenders around even when he's not got the ball
Guy Posted 22 October 2011 Posted 22 October 2011 I always remember that Ipswich debacle away last season (the match which whould have been abandoned of course but for being on pie in the Sky) when Howard was there in his shorts and short sleeved football top as if it was the middle of September - not minus 10 degrees in East Anglia in a blizzard! A journeyman legend who epitomises what English football is all about!! - and which is sadly lacking amongst many players these days - take note the 11 on the pitch v the Lions today!
Thracian Posted 22 October 2011 Posted 22 October 2011 Well I wouldn't start Beckford. Quite what Schlupp has done wrong I don't know but in terms of holding the ball and cogging in with the likes of Nugent, King, Vassell and Dyer, I'd have Howard as an option quite happily. Beckford summed up his "me" attitude today when he refused to chase down a poor Konshelsky pass and, instead used the time to berate his team-mate. With Howard - limited though he may be in his twilight years as a footballer you get 100% commitment to the cause. And that's what we need everywhere. People who give their all and make things happen.
ajthefox Posted 22 October 2011 Posted 22 October 2011 I wouldn't start him but he should definitely be on the bench because what he has to offer can change games, we saw only a couple of weeks ago how effective he can be when he practically created 2 goals from nothing. And as others have said, his commitment to the cause, unlike Beckford -amongst others it must be said- who seemingly has the mental age of a child and no capacity to think beyond his own little world, is invaluable.
The Doctor Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 aj summed it up for me, not good enough to start but he does offer a different option and so should be on the bench.
Kitchandro Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 I'd start Schlupp with Beckford and Howard on the bench.
Fox92 Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 Please explain why you selected 'no'? I selected 'on the bench' because Howard is a plan B. He can offer somrthing that the rest of the strikers cannot offer - an ariel threat. Steve Howard can come off of the bench to rough up the opposition defence, he would have been perfect for Millwall yesterday because their centre half's had no challenge all game, it was easy for them. And at least Howard would have tried.
Fmfox Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 I would certainly drop beckford as he clearly doesnt care, konch and wellens have him evils when he didnt chase anything down, instead he gave konch a thumbs up. Start schlupp with howard on the bench
teblin Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 I would have him on the bench. Offers something different to all the other strikers we have. I think he would have been on the bench every week if we still had 7 subs.
