Talks have been held according to the Merc

although nothing new to report.

Leicester City are narrowing down their shortlist of candidates for the successor to Sven-Goran Eriksson, having held talks with possible contenders.

There has been no shortage of interest in the City post, and the Mercury understands that, over the weekend, the club held initial talks with several candidates who are free agents.

Now City, who travel to Turf Moor for their Championship clash against Burnley tonight (7.45), will begin the final phase of the search for their fourth manager in 18 months.

Huddersfield Town's Lee Clark has emerged as the outright favourite, but he has repeatedly denied having received any approach so far.

However, he has not categorically stated he would not be interested in the job, and there have been unconfirmed reports that City are set to make their move for the Terriers boss in the next couple of days.

"I can't speak about whether there is anything in these stories because I've had no contact, but if I did the first person I would pick up the phone to within seconds would be Dean Hoyle (Huddersfield chairman), to explain the situation," said Clark.

"He has become a good friend as well as my boss, and I've got too much respect for him not to do it that way – but there are many factors before we even reach that stage because this is just speculation and it might all be worthless."

Former Leicester boss Nigel Pearson is also under consideration by City, and he has refused to answer questions on a possible return to the King Power Stadium.

Ex-Derby County and Nottingham Forest boss Billy Davies is understood to be interested in the position, as is former Cardiff City manager Dave Jones.

There has also been speculation that former England boss Kevin Keegan, ex-Manchester City manager Mark Hughes, and even former Chelsea manager Avram Grant are in the frame.

However, one possible target who has virtually ruled himself out of the running is Crystal Palace boss Dougie Freedman, who said: "It's a rumour, it's speculation. I'm very happy at Crystal Palace.

"I took over nine months ago and, hopefully, there's a long way to go in this job.

"I've got a difficult job to take the club forward and that's what I'm trying to do."

Ideally, City would like to have their man in place before Sunday's visit of Leeds United to the King Power Stadium, but first-team coach Mike Stowell and academy manager Jon Rudkin will again assume control for tonight's trip to Burnley.

That's about as close to Clark accepting if he's offered the job as it could possibly get. But I'm still not convinced MON is unattainable.

Clark soooo wants the job he's not even being subtle about it now.

Yeh makes you wonder whether he has been contacted at all, that must be bloody frustrating for him lol!!!

Good stuff. Nice to know they've finally got around to having a chat about it. I would have thought they might have had a think about things before sacking Sven, but I guess our owners don't work like that. We can expect a new manager in by Christmas time then, I suppose.

I believe it may be Roy Keane...

Actually I'm probably in a small minority but wouldn't mind if it was him or Paul Ince .

The other names being bandied about aren't giving me cause for euphoria ( apart from MON and that probably isn't going to happen)

Imagine if Nige came back! The speculation alone must be giving his ego one hell of a massage.

He ranks 4th in my order of preference in case you're interested.

If I wanted it instantly I'd have been dissapointed over a week ago. Eight days and we're only on preliminary talks. I don't think it's an overreaction to wonder what they are doing. If they literally had no idea who they were going to appoint then they should have kept Sven on for these two games while they thought things through.

Was pretty stupid to sack Sven with two games in three days just ahead.

I would hope that they have an idea by tonight. things could turn ugly and very quickly.

We're going to smash Burnley later no worries.

We'll smash the Leeds scum on Sunday too

But as I keep saying, a couple of weeks for a managerial appointment is nothing new, it happens regularly. Pompey have taken several weeks as well after losing Cotterill.

Why keep a manager they think isn't good enough? I don't understand this argument, they sacked him because they didn't think he was doing a good job, you may as well just get rid. They may also have respect for the man and not want to conduct things behind his back, he's well connected and would probably have got wind of it if they had.

This... Rather take the time it needs to get the right manager in than rush into getting the wrong one.

I consider this to be a very important appointment for the club cos we do seem to be somewhat destabilised at present.

But what difference does time taken to appoint one achieve? You can drop a b*llock either way. All you are doing is listening to some potential managers putting their interview voice on. The Thais should have known who they wanted before they sacked Sven. It looks to me like they know little about football.
