21st Century Fox Posted 9 November 2011 Posted 9 November 2011 Piece about Sean St. Ledger in The Guardian, mainly about the Republic of Ireland but it gives a few mentions to City. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/nov/09/sean-st-ledger-euro-2012-ireland St Ledger's story, though, comes from the realms of the improbable. The 26-year-old is the only member of Trapattoni's established XI who has no Premier League experience and even his Championship minutes have been limited this season, following his summer transfer from Preston North End. St Ledger has started in only four league matches this season, as he has found himself as cover for the first-choice pairing of Matt Mills and Sol Bamba. It is a wonder that he speaks so fondly of Sven-Goran Eriksson, the manager who signed him but failed to accommodate him. Eriksson was sacked towards the end of last month, only 13 games into the league campaign. "It was very early," St Ledger says, "and I was very surprised. For a guy that didn't play me, I quite liked him. But that is Sven's charm. It's why the ladies like him so much."
21st Century Fox Posted 9 November 2011 Author Posted 9 November 2011 I thought he was older than 26? 28 December 1984 according to Wikipedia. We've had this article already i think. Oops didn't see it anywhere.
Yojoe36 Posted 9 November 2011 Posted 9 November 2011 Never gets a game (while no suspensions) and is in Ireland's XI squad. Damn
themotivator Posted 9 November 2011 Posted 9 November 2011 i could be being naive here, but is irelands defensive prowess mainly due to the fact that they have one of the best managers of a defence in trappatoni rather than the quality of players like SSL? i know Trappo recommended sean to sven. (sorry i dont really follow ireland)
John Matrix Posted 9 November 2011 Posted 9 November 2011 I'm fairly sure we did anyway well i'm more than fairly sure we didn't. this article was posted on the guardian today. you are referring to a different article.
davieG Posted 9 November 2011 Posted 9 November 2011 We've had this article already i think. There was a St Ledger article but it was before Sven got the elbow.
Fox92 Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 To be fair, I have always liked him as a defender. But, if the current defensive partneship is ok, then he'll have to wait but he will get his chance - He might see himself picked under Pearson.

I hope not, from what i have seen of him he isnt up to the standard we need IMO
Fox92 Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 I hope not, from what i have seen of him he isnt up to the standard we need IMO I think he will be. I thought he was good at West Ham.
flowwolf Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 If you have not played in the top flight by 26 it tells it's own story he simply is not good enough. From what i have seen of him play for us he is not going to get into a Pearson side. Yet another of Ericksons poor buys.

That is true of course, but he has proved in the last few seasons with Preston North End that he is capable enough of being a solid defender at this level. However, if Sven didn't sell Hobbs then I don't think he would have had to go out a buy another defender (St. Ledger).
TheUltimateWinner Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 I've always rated him, He is a good defender and underated aswell. Everyone has a thing for bamba though, and he cant live up to them standards. At the moment I do rate him more then Mills... Also his comment about sven is legendary.

Guest Basildon Fox Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 Another gem of footballing analytical genius. I'd say he has a point. Very few British players go on to have successful careers in the top division in the later stages of their careers having never reached that far before. There are exceptions but in the main he is right.

Ian Wright only made it to the top flight at 26 by way of a Crystal Palace play off win I'm sure that told Arsenal he was not good enough when they signed him for a then club record fee when he was 28.

I can agreeing with what you say here but, perhaps it would have been better playing along another one then Bamba! Perhaps he gonna bee a much better player. But this we will not ever know or So please not judge any player in the team after Svens 13 games if he..... who knew :scarf:
Guest Col city fan Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 Quite simply from what I've seen of St Ledger so far I've been hugely disappointed. It wasnt that long ago he was being linked with a couple of premiership clubs. I've not seen anything in him to warrant this sort of interest, albeit previously. I definitely think he is no better than Jack Hobbs and Hobbs has the age advantage over him and can develop and improve further. St Ledger and Danns have been the two most disappointing of Svens signings, as I didn't expect anything much of Beckford.

Thracian Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 St Ledger and Danns have been the two most disappointing of Svens signings, as I didn't expect anything much of Beckford. I'm not sure they're both "the" most disappointing - there's two or three others in the mix - but they're certainly close and quite on what basis SSL came out with a self-promotional interview at a time when our defence was so solid I can't imagine. Even when he did get another chance he hardly excelled and the very thought of his indifferent Leicester performances following the fact that his last club was relegated, is hardly confidence building either for him or for us. Some folk just cog into a club but I've a funny feeling SSL will be one of those that doesn't - whether he's really any good or not.
