Money can't buy promotion, says Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson

New Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson has warned that the club cannot buy promotion – they must earn it.

Pearson returned to City this week after nearly 18 months at Hull City and, for the first time in his managerial career, he knows he will be heavily backed in the transfer market.

Pearson has always had to rebuild previous clubs after taking over.

As a coach and assistant, he stepped into the breach many times as a caretaker after a managerial departure.

As a manager in his own right, he saved Carlisle United from relegation from the Football League, steadied the ship at Southampton, and then rebuilt City and Hull following relegations. Each time he had a limited budget.

The 48-year-old faces a different scenario this time at City as he will be financially backed by the club's ambitious Thai owners, but he said that support would not guarantee success.

"The ambition of the owners has so far been reflected in the expenditure, but I am of the opinion that it isn't just about going out and spending money," said Pearson, who has been joined at City by his head of recruitment, Steve Walsh.

"I have to get the best out of the players here and they have an opportunity to perform and show what they can do.

"I am sure if we are in a competitive position in January the support will be there and I am not worried about that.

"I also know that with the recruitment policy we have always adopted, it is important to do our homework.

"However much you spend the same criteria comes in, in terms of making sure they are the right type of player and people. We will still be that thorough, regardless of the money. It is about getting the right people in.

"It is a big ask, but I am more than happy to take on the task. It is an exciting opportunity."

I've got a fewf random questions.

1. Has person realised that he is now the face of a cooperate machine and he needs to change the way he presents himself? Do you think Top mentioned it in the interview as a concern? No more track suits on matchsay?

2. Will tunch be called into Pearsons office to give the low down on Palace or will Pearson know enough already and see that as a sigh of weakness.

I was thinking of all of these things when falling asleep last night.

Nige always talks sense.

Agree. So glad we have him back on board. No messing about, straight to the point.

And I hope he is like that with the players. I know he won't accept less than average.
