cant remember the last time we had an exciting winger possibly ryan smith on loan from arsenal was the last time who would excite me on the wing with the strikers we have waghorn has never cam across as a goalscorer but is a good player could he not be converted to wing and give a more attacking push somebody who will try run and take defenders on

:xmaslaugh: That is crazy talk next you will be suggesting Steve Walsh could of been a striker and Dion Dublin could of been a centre back, na seriously why not we haven't got anyone else who can play there other than Lloyd

in fact steve walsh was often played as a striker and dublin filled in in the center back role.

Waghorn was very good in his first spell here as a holding player by himself up front, got the ball, held it well and also scored some nice goals.

As an advocate of developing what we already have (unless they really want to leave) I'm gonna say yes to this idea.

I've got fed up with all this going out to buy all and sundry because we've got money. We've done this and I genuinely see little improvement as a team since Pearson was last here. If anything we look less of a team now than we did then.

I agree with the MON school of management which has always seemed to be to develop what you have already, instill belief and make them think they are better than maybe they actually are. It's no coincidence IMO that Sunderland have won two out of three since he went there and even Bendtner scored this week!

I've said many times that players play differently for different managers. Waghorn has also looked most 'at home' under Nigel Pearson.

He has pace, strength and can cut inside to shoot.

We have seen that he can play effectively down the flanks particularly in a 4-3-3 system.

Therefore, I see no reason why Waggy can't be used in this way. In the same way as I always argued it was a shame we lost Hobbs who, I thought, was a good young player who would only get better, so too is Waghorn IMO.

I'd like it if we got back to the development of our own, re created that team spirit, rather than continually looking to who we can go out and sign next.

Money does not buy instant success. What is as important is bigging our players up and getting back team morale. Finally, and most importantly, sorting out that players that truly want to wear that City shirt and to play for the manager and the fans.

Waggy has a future at the football club. As a wide man in an attacking formation? Yeah I don't see why not...

God no! We actually have money for once. Why convert him to that position when we can go and get someone who actually plays in that position. If memory serves, his crossing and set pieces were dreadful when he took them before.

Round pegs, round holes please....... work out a formation and a back up plan and get the players who can deliver that. To be honest with the players we have I'd rather be watching what we have under Sven. If Nigel doesn't go out and get his own players and organise the side to play the way he wants there is no point in him being here as the last few games have demonstrated - if the old guard were good enough we'd have gone up under Pearson.

He has been used as a wide striker (4-3-3) and has also had the responsibility of taking inswinging corners from the right, however id expect at least one dedicated winger to come in soon, and i see Waggy as a "back-up striker", a role he had under NP at Leicester and Dull

The square pegs in round holes argument was most apparent under Sven, Nick..

The forum, a couple or three months ago, was full of this type of opinion if I remember correctly?

I feel that Pearson is doing exactly what you are advocating now.. He is developing a game plan and is looking for the players to deliver this plan.

All I'm saying is that we don't necessarily have to go out and buy lots more players to be able to do this. This was the Sven way and if it happens again it could be that we are still suggesting, months later, that the new signings need 'time to gel'

From what I've seen of Waggy he could play as one in a 4-3-3

From what I've seen of Sol Bamba he could play just in front of the front four..

Just my opinion mate. I'd simply like us to get the best out of what we have (even including Beckford if he has his heart in staying at the club) rather than 'going shopping' all over again.

I think we need a couple of good lads to come into the club.. But not another wholesale set of changes again. I think with the proper plan and some time we can get much better out of what we have already, including Waghorn..

This may not be a popular view but it's what I believe.

If we were a club stuck without money or in adminstration then yes maybe it would be something to think about as an option, but we are not. We have a huge transfer kity and the transfer window is opening shortly so surely the best solution by far is buy a decent right winger!

I doubt it really matters about 'the developing what we have' argument....

Yes we have money and yes I agree we will go

out and spend again. Whether this is the right or wrong thing to do I guess we will see over time. But you're right Jace, I'm sure this is what we will do.

Waghorn played plenty of times in a 4-3-3, and over that time I think he got worse rather than better. His crosses are worse than Dyer's. His corners are worse than Gally's and rarely make it past the first man or are wildly overcooked sailing over heads.

If the arguement that he would be better if he played more rings out again, then the same could be said about half the squad.

Waggy is a forward. And not even a prolific one at that at the moment. He's coming off a injury. What is the possibility that his going to instantly excel in either position, or over a matter of a few games or over the rest of the season? Next to nothing. We need an instant impact and Waggy is not the answer for either position. Sure it would be great or have been great had he had the aptitude to excel or change behaviours and grow in other lacking skills, but he hasn't. How many free kicks have sailed up into the rafters? Has his technique improved one jot? How do you think his learning will be applied to an entire new position? will his crossing improve. I doubt it.
