DANGEROUS TIGER

Self -Harming Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Massive respect to everyone speaking up about their problems here, I've never cut myself or really self harmed but I have contemplated suicide a few times (only once did I actually do something) it was all because of a break up that absolutely destroyed me, obviously some of your problems are far worse than just a break up but it really hit me hard. I can be happy and fine for a long time but then all of a sudden I get a wave of deep depression where i can barely function and sometimes for no reason. I find myself googling "best ways to commit suicide" and even writing notes to my family and friends, then I can wake up and feel totally fine. It's really strange. Good luck to everyone :)

Well done everybody for speaking up.

Mental health issues are particularly difficult to deal with because they're 'invisible' and it's easy to feel very alone.

In my experience, it's extremely helpful to hear from other people in a similar position, which a) helps you understand your own problems and b) reassures you that you're not alone.

Also key, for me, is gaining an understanding and acceptance of your issues and working from there.

Best of luck all of you.

I would like to thank the posters on here for their understanding, and some shared experiences, as well as good advice.

It is good to find others who can relate to the issue, although of course I would not wish it on them, and hope they resolve their issues.

I know that I make posts that anger some people, but it just an old DT habit ( incurable I'm afraid lol )., but I am pleased that people have reacted positively to this post.

I would like to think it will help some people to realise that it is not an uncommon illness, and that it may help others who may feel that if it ever happens to them, to realize they are not alone, or in any way weird.

To those of you who have sent private messages to me, and share my problem, I thank you, and wish you well for the future.

Thank you all.

Atrocious aspect of your character - you should model yourself more on me, a model of posting moderation.

How and why the Diplomatic Corps let your talent slip through their fingers is a constant mystery to me

Far too many people take far too much of this forum far too seriously.

Life's for living chap, and there's a mine of people always willing to help you live it. Admittedly this speech comes to you from the makers four different prescribed medications and Badger Ale's Tanglefoot.

Cutting yourself is one thing, suicide is another altogether. Firstly, I hope you looked for help (either personal or professional) but personally I think that is so extreme. It's a break up, we all go through them, I know we all experience them differently but at the end of the day there are bigger things in the world, much bigger (This time it's not about you, you can do something about it). Seriously, it's a great start with somewhere like here, but go and seek some professional help.Good luck.

I didn't seek professional help but I'm fine now thank you, and also I said that maybe its not the worst thing to ever happen to someone but it's how bad affected me, thanks for your "concern"

I didn't mean to sound condescending, I'm sorry that I have, I never said it's 'the worst thing'. It's just my opinion that your life is so much more important that the effect others can have on it. (I've known several people that have been suicidal and that have other serious issues) and in literally every single case there have been so many people that care for them and that they mean so much to. I'm just trying to offer support as the people I've mentioned have turned it around and felt these feelings less and less.

Nice to see Windass speaking out about his depression

It's just a shame that the facilities and support on offer to football players simply don't exist for normal people. There is help but you need an advocate to fight your corner for you in order to get your entitlement...not something you can do on your own when suffering.

The message to take from this is that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I don't understand why anyone would be ashamed of being ill.

Because most people think you are just doing it for attention, because of the guilt that pounds down upon the suffering person, because the person becomes a shadow of the person they used to be and they know it...and a whole host of reasons I could continue with.

But mainly because so few people understand.

I guess it's to do with the outdated view that its some kind of weakness or slight on your character.

True. It's disheartened nonetheless. Illness is illness regardless of what form it takes. Help is always required

I understand that, I just don't get how people don't take mental health seriously. I had a whole group of friends who never visited me in hospital because it was a mental helath issue, anything else and i'm sure they would have been there.

I think it's because people are so misinformed or not informed at all about it, which I would lay at the door of the education and health services. The media doesn't exactly help in its portrayal of mental health either. If you've got a broken leg or something people can see it and understand but with mental health issues there's nothing to see.

I agree with you 100% though.

bravo that man. Too right, i have been fortunate and yes i say fortunate to have had reasonably close contact though both work and friends/family who have suffered the angst of both self harming and worse. I wish without getting too personal sometimes that we could lay our souls bare as i have witnessed things that would honestly choke the calmest of people. How i dont need help personally is something that i will never know. In short if we could all just spare a moment for those less fortunate than ourselves, just a moment i say, and show that caring side of humanity, it would surely make the world a better place. Just please think and help when you can, it does make a difference

That's a shame. I think on one hand it comes down to people being unable to cope with the idea of you not acting or talking like you - and the judgemental opinions of mental illness summed up in the quote below:

I don't want this to come across in the wrong way, or look to be insensitive but sometimes see it as attention based.

I've no idea how you overcome entrenched but flawed views like that...
