ozleicester Posted 14 March 2012 Posted 14 March 2012 i thought they were taking an old mattress to the tip Fly tippers?
Zingari Posted 14 March 2012 Posted 14 March 2012 Fly tippers? Yes, the assassins were a couple of deranged local council recycling officers who were incensed with a society that was constantly filling up their land fill sites with mattresses and stuff . WW1 was inevitable after this . edit; Well that’s the official story anyway, but the truth is much more sinister. It’s a little known historical fact (because I say it is) that the landfill sites were actually an undercover operation for WWI trenches being built before the whole show kicked off in 1914. People fly tipping and dumping mattresses in them was risking the whole business being found out. Ferdinand was just too high profile to be allowed to dump his mattress in full view of the press and public and he had to be stopped before the operation was blown, The rest, as they say, is history.
Daggers Posted 14 March 2012 Posted 14 March 2012 Randomness? The Germans had geared themselves up for war a long time before Prince Ferdinand`s assassination, his death was just an excuse. Drunk posting, I didn't explain myself very well. It's all about the moment & severity and how theoretical physics is being used in the quest to it. An example is given of building a sand pile, one grain at a time. At some point the pile is going to have a slip but what is unknown is when and how big the slip will be. Funding is being carried out by investment firms with the aim of predicting time and size of stock market crashes. I didn't mean to imply that a single incident was the cause of WW1, just that a single chance incident triggered the start in the way that a minute slippage suddenly sparks a cataclysmic shift between tectonic plates.
Phube Posted 14 March 2012 Posted 14 March 2012 What is more incredible is the roll-of-dice chance that came into play in all of this. The driver had to divert from the planned route. At the moment he did so two anarchists emerged from a bar having had a skinfull. There, in front of the drunk anarchists was the bastard they hated, totally by chance. It was this level of randomness that killed 15,000,000ish people. I've plugged this on this forum before but I strongly recommend anyone interested in how the outbreak of WW1 related to earthquakes and stock market crashes to read Ubiquity by Mark Buchanan - there's second hand ones for 1p if you're hard up on Amazon. Although I disagree with you all the time, the book has been wish listed as it sounds quality! Plus I think you recommended 'The God Delusion' as well, and I loved that.

Guesty Posted 15 March 2012 Posted 15 March 2012 From channel 4's Killing Fields about Sri Lanka. PS: This is one of the best/most educational threads I've seen on FT so thanks to the OP and contributors.

Fox92 Posted 27 June 2012 Posted 27 June 2012 I'm afraid pictures like that make me sad and angry. Ok, but not for me. I saw it today and thought it was fairly inspirational.
Phube Posted 27 June 2012 Posted 27 June 2012 As posted by me in Film thread: Plus this one after Mel Blanc died "Speechless":
Reynard Bleu Posted 29 June 2012 Posted 29 June 2012 I'm afraid pictures like that make me sad and angry. The picture is not about how he got his horrific injuries, its about his courage and determination to achieve something despite those injuries. Like most of soldiers seriously injured in recent years, Ben won't thank you for your sadness or your anger.

I don't want to be thanked and I can't make up how I feel it comes naturally, not that I have to justify how I feel or feel guilty for feeling it.
