Does anyone else watch this seminal piece of infotainment? It's almost certainly my favourite programme not on terrestial TV. The presenters are fun (and Kari Byron is very much the thinking man's crumpet) and UK narration is top notch (especially compared to the dry, serious US version.)

The basic idea of the programme is that they use scientific method to test the validity of rumors, urban myths, movie scenes, adages, Internet videos, and news stories. I think my favourite episode was when they did Ninja's and tried to smash sword blades, stop sword blades bare handed and run on water. It's all done tongue in cheek too.

So does anyone else have a favourite episode or have anything they would like to test out? I guess Zingari and El Empty would have a few things they would liek covered, though the moon-landing conspiracies have already been debunked! :P

i loved the one where they tried to debunk the old Dubliners' song

the "Sick Note"

Dear Sir, I write this note to you to tell you of me plight

and at the time of writing, I am not a pretty sight;

me body is all black and blue, me face a deathly gray

and I write this note to say why Paddy's not at work today.

While working on the fourteenth floor some bricks I had to clear;

now, to throw them down from such a height was not a good idea.

the foreman wasn't very pleased, he beeing an awkward sod

he said I'd have to cart them down the ladders in me hod.

Now, clearing all these bricks by hand it was so very slow,

so I hoisted up a barrel and secured the rope below.

But in me haste to do the job I was to blind to see

that a barrelful of building bricks was heavier than me.

So when I untied the rope the barrel fell like lead

and clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead.

Well, I shot up like a rocket till to my dismay I found

that halfway up I met the bloody barrel comming down.

Well, the barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped,

and when I reached the top I banged the pully with my head.

Well, I clung on tight through numbed shock from this almighty blow

and the barrel spilled out half the bricks fourteen floors below.

Now, when these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor

I then outweighed the barrel and so started down once more;

still clinging tightly to the rope, I sped towards the ground,

and I landed on the brocken bricks that were all scattered round.

Well, I lay there groaning on the ground, I thougth I'd passed the worst,

when the barrel hit the pully-wheel and then the bottom burst.

Well, a shower of bricks rained down on me, I hadn't got a hope

as I lay there moaning on the ground, I let go of the bloody rope.

The barrel than being heavier, it started down once more,

and landed right across me, as I lay upon the floor.

Well, it broke three ribs and my left arm and I can only say

that I hope you'll understand why Paddy's not a work today.

Love it, watched it so much until I came to uni where I haven't had a tv and don't really get the chance to watch when I am back at home.

Just trying to think back about favourites but I'm struggling to think back and pick out specific episodes.

It really is such a good program though, intellectually stimulating, humourous and genuinely entertaining too.

I saw the one where they tried to see if Cool Hand Luke's 50 boiled egg challenge was even possible!

Turns out no!

Yes a good watch. I liked the episode where they used the Blue Angels (I think thats what they're called, US Navy display team), to try to shatter windows with the sonic boom from flying at low altitude.

Particually like how, whether the myths proven right or wrong, its a common occurance to blow the fook outta something at the end.

Aye, I love when they "ramp it up" regardless of whether it would have actually been possible in the normal parameters of the incident(s) being investigated.

best part half the time, particularly when it involves explosions lol

I have a book called The Pedants Return.

It's about things that people believed, but then general consensus decided that they're myths, but that turn out to actually be true.

Sort of Mythbusterbusters.

The RFID one would have been interesting if they had been allowed to air it! It would have shown everybody that electronic money is not the way to go. The credit card company gangster theives had the episode banned I think.

I don't think I've ever seen one episode of this programme. I don't recognize the dude anyway.

Edit: I tell a lie, I think I saw one where they blew a safe open or something similar.

Well if true it could be kinda important to our lives and well being and the future of a free world, so I can understand El Empty having a bee in his bonnet about this stuff.

Absolutely, I'm not taking issue with EE at all. Just that I read only minutes before his post on here, his thread about financial terrorism.

PS: Is "kinda" a correct grammatical term? Also, there are too many uses of the word "and". A comma between "lives" and "well-being" (note the hyphen) would be better grammar :P;)

Oh dear, what have I said? I need to make sure I get all my grammar correct from now on.

Grammar war eh? Like all good Grammar Nazis my ability to spot mistakes in others is greater than my capacity for grammatical perfection, whilst writing a hurried reply before my boss comes over.

I will accept that "well being" should either be "well-being" or "wellbeing", I disagree with "kinda" it is a perfectly cromulent word and its usage is wide, whilst informal there is nothing wrong with using it. I also don't think there is anything in the grammar dictionary on using the word "and" too many times, it may not look pretty or scan very well, but it is not a grammatical error.

I have generally refrained from picking people up on their grammar, instead I choose to exhibit the worst cases of bad grammar in my sig, which I hope to act as a reminder to all. I was going to rebrand myself as a Grammar Pacifist, but I never got round to doing so.

Incidentally, you shouldn't use the word "also" to start a sentence, and you do seem to be missing a full stop at the end of "would be better grammatically." (note grammatically) I don't think smilies count.

lol... if that's an acceptable term now that it appears in the OED. I quite enjoy being hauled up by you, Capt. It's nearly as pleasant as AOWW correcting me. I accept my errors and will try harder in future. My english language O-level is but a distant memory. ;) I also applaud your sig, by the way.

But... ahem...! "remainder". I guess I can forgive an aberrant "a" seeing as you're under pressure of hiding from the boss. ;)
