Conclusions (or not) from Birmingham City

My brother and I rocked-up to the KP last night to enjoy (we hoped) a night of football. It seems we missed a good game. The club did not allow my brother to trade-in his unused ticket from the Middlesbrough game and we walked away, twenty minutes before kick-off. We are disgusted with the way we were treated - no concession offered, no apology - and have serious doubts about whether or not we should be putting passion and enthusiasm into supporting a club that simply does not care about its supporters.

Find out the whole story on Of Fosse and Foxes and, please, comment here and on the blog.

Mods: This sounds like an advert but, please, I want this story heard.

Harsh - not the biggest crowd last night either

This is sort of my point. In what way would they have lost by just letting us in? Not that they even offered us a discount, or anything. They were perfectly happy to see us just walk away.

I don't get it, I'm not a season ticket holder so I don't know what the rules are, but why were you owed a 'free' ticket?

If I understand correctly, your brother didn't go to the Boro game, so he can use his ticket for that game to get you a free ticket.

You weren't eligible, because last nights game was a platinum game and the Boro game was gold, makes sense, otherwise you will have people skipping games against doncaster to take a mate to the Leeds game.

So you were had the chance to buy a ticket and have to pay the same as me if you wanted to see the game, but you still had the free ticket, which you could use at any other Gold game.

Don't see a problem here, and I am actually quite impressed the club offer that to season ticket holders they didn't in the past.

Why was Birmingham on a Tuesday night 'Platinum' anyway?

I'll agree with that, but it was clearly advertised as being so.

Well said, these are the rules and if you want them bent maybe next time speak to someone in charge or get there earlier so you have time to sort it with someone in charge.

Because if they do it for you, they have to do it for everyone. Which would make the rule of having to turn in your season ticket prior to the game you're missing, and only trading for certain types of games pointess.

Whilst you could argue the t's and c's were changed AFTER the purchase of your season ticket (as they were in my case), unfortunately you accept their terms and conditions. The people in the club shop don't make the rules, they are just their to put them into practice.

I don't understand how you are owed a free ticket for the Birmingham game for not attending an earlier game?

It's part of the season ticket. Last year you had a paper book with tickets and and could miss any game you wanted and trade the unused stub for another ticket on another day to bring along a friend.

Now the rules have changed. If you are going to miss a game you need to surrender your season ticket prior to the game. They do this as obviously we no longer have stubs and don't have the electric system in place to prove you whether you were there or not.

You can also only trade the game for like for like ones. ie you can't skip doncaster so that you can bring a mate to the last game of the season, or boxing day, or Forest, which will always be more expensive.

I see. Been a few years since I had a ST but to be honest it would not have crossed my mind that if I missed a game that I could get a ticket for a different match....

I'm guessing they changed the rules this year because too many people took the piss, as I was planning on doing.

I was going to miss half the games and claim free tickets for the other half so that my brother could come with me. Meaning we both saw half the games on the cheap... unfortunately they decided to change the rules after i'd actually purchased the season ticket.

Also, why did your brother wait until 20minutes before kick off to get this sorted. He could have phoned or popped in prior to the game to find out if you couldn't trade it in. Then you wouldn't of had a wasted trip.

Like others have said, he agreed the terms and conditions when he bought a season ticket. I didn't go to the 'boro game as I was at a concert and forgot to take my ticket in before hand. So it's my fault, not theres

You can't just say you are disgusted by the way you were treated just because you didn't get your own way. You can't have one rule for you and another for someone else. Sorry if this sounds harsh.

If you bothered to read the blog, you'll see it is a practice he and his brothers have followed on several previous occasions this season.

The issue came from the designation of the Birmingham game as a platinum fixture, which the club didn't exactly go out of its way to promote.

My brother has followed the rules, though. He did hand his ticket in and he is owed a match. He has done it on three other occasions and it has not been a problem. See below for why I think it was daft on this occasion, it makes no business sense.

And I'm not disgusted because of 'the rule' or because I did not 'get my own way'. Let's not get into a petty argument about that. I'm angered due to the manner in which we were made to feel inferior and there was not even an apology, let alone a good will gesture. The attitude was very much one of 'if you're not going to pay then stuff you'. I'm fairly certain I've been a fan for longer than the self-important supervisor has worked in the club shop for...

It really wouldn't hurt to let people upgrade for a Platinum match for a fiver or something

That's what I expected them to do when he said we couldn't do it - just seems madness, they've lost money on concessionary sales (we'd both have bought food/drink inside) and it wasn't exactly a full stadium so seating us would not have been an issue.

It wouldn't, but then they also don't have to give people a free ticket if they miss a game. It may be worth contacting the club and it may be something they will introduce for next season, although personally I would make it more than a fiver to cover extra admin and stop people trying to take advantage. I would make it double the difference between a premium and an equivalent Gold ticket.

Thanks, and yes. Why even was Brum on a Tuesday night a platinum fixture? It would hardly be a sell-out if it was on some cut-price promotion!

Posted

It was a rearranged fixture and should have been played on the day of the Norwich game.

But it was strange to deem Birmingham as a platinum fixture when the Coventry game wasn't.

you've had a mare. this is your brothers/your fault and not the clubs. don't have a go at them when they have a system in place. ignorance is not an excuse.

It was on the website clear for any body to check, and if he had sorted it out earlier then it never would have happened.

...and he still is.

...erm the free tickets if you miss a game are already a pretty big good will gesture, I am pretty sure this is not common practice among championship clubs. If you had a problem with the supervisor's attitude then make a complaint. If your problem is that he didn't offer you an upgrade, I am pretty sure that it will be because he couldn't not that he didn't want to. 20 minutes before kick-off is probably not a quiet time to talk to his manager and change ticketing policy.

They haven't lost money on concessionary sales as now you have 2 free tickets, so you will be coming again and spending the same on pies and pints, but yes it would have made sense as you were there and there were plenty of free seats to offer you an upgrade, so contact the club explain the situation and that you would have been happy to pay the difference and see what they say, but don't do it 20 minutes before kick-off.

While the above is technically accurate, it also reads as a defence of jobsworths.

I doubt whether staff in King Power stores would have been as inflexible.

If it was rearranged then, it would have been allocated as platinum at the start of the season and there are a set number of platinum games and gold games so to declassify the game would make it unfair on season ticket holders who have already paid for the game on buying a season ticket.

So have you/are you going to contacted the club regarding this issue??

I still don't see why you had to wait 20 minutes before kick off to get this sorted. You could have sorted this over the phone/email/went in personally a few days before....

It was more pedantry than a defence of jobsworths, but it is true if someone asks you to do something you have no authority to do, then it is not worth risking your job to bend the rules. I don't know what the software system is like at the KP and how they use it but it may be technically impossible to print out a platinum ticket without payment or swiping a season ticket which is owed a platinum ticket. I know these things can be a pain in the arse to work with if you are deviating from standard procedures.

Like I said speak to the club and maybe it will be introduced next season and clearly stated in the Ts & Cs.
